Serious question:
I need legit replies, not just people suggesting whatever model they bought.

- I need a computer for programming, and 2D + SIMPLE 3D game development.

It will also be my main computer:
-Web browsing
-Streaming movies/shows
-Playing 2D games

Programs I will be using -
-Win7 OS (might dual boot with linux)
-Visual Studio 2013 Ultimate
-Android development software
etc.

My Budget is around 250$ including shipping.

What used/ older model thinkpad should I get for this purpose that can handle all of the things listed with ease?

And what specs should I need minimum?

x220 reporting in

>i5
>8gb RAM
>250gb SSD
>6-cell and 9-cell batteries
>usb 3.0 expresscard

I know there's a lot of people here who look down on the x220 for various reasons, but I love this laptop. I mainly use it for on the go coding, and just general usage. It runs virtual machines fine. I don't really have any complaints. A 1080p screen would be cool.

If you're thinking about getting an x220, and the 16:9 screen/slightly modified keyboard aren't deal breakers for you then I suggest going for it if you can find one for a decent price that fits your budget.

Here's what I ended up paying
>x220 i5 4gb ram with warranty (~$260) used/basically mint condition
>another 4gb ram ($38) new
>usb 3.0 expresscard ($8) new
>OEM 6-cell battery ($30) new
>250gb SSD ($140) new
total = ~$475

According to the thinkwiki the expresscard reduces battery life. Wouldnt it be better to get one of the i7 x220 that come with usb3.0 as standard?

>According to the thinkwiki the expresscard reduces battery life. Wouldnt it be better to get one of the i7 x220 that come with usb3.0 as standard?

I don't notice any unusual battery drainage with the usb 3.0 expresscard mounted. I'm sure there's a reduction in battery life when it's in use lol. The i7 model would actually give you worse battery performance than an i5 model with a usb 3.0 expresscard. The i7 model is also about $80 more than the i5 model, and harder to come by. It's not worth the extra money imo.
>>
>>43215214
IIRC, there's a lot of performance gains in things like startup, solution load, opening large solutions, etc. I don't really remember too much about other fancy features as I didn't use 2012 as much, and I've since moved onto VS14CTP.

Care to share more about your experiences btw? How do you use it? I use it about 70 hours a week so I'm a bit familiar with things.

>>
>>43215414
My brother has a W520 supplied by his work (Symantec) and he runs VMs all day long. He's got 32GB of RAM in it. I've never used VMs to do any actual work, just to try to play a game, so I'm not sure what sort of hardware is needed. I have a T420 that works pretty well with whatever I throw at it.

With a T410, I guess I'd decide if what you're going to do is GPU-intensive or not. My T420 has switchable graphics, but I believe the T410 can only come with integrated.

I got my T420 for $430 or so off eBay I think.
>>
Ok, so thinkpads are gorgeous, versatile, and modular moreso than other laptops available.

BUT, why do all of you guys foam and drool over computers that are for all intents and purposes really not that impressive as far as specifications are concerned? /g/'s level of obsession with these computers astounds me considering your tendency to spew vitriol at someone who purchases an apple computer. You're the same as the macbook fanboys, if not worse because of your incredibly misguided superiority complex.

Don't even know why I posted this, guess the idiotic echo chamber of bad ideas that is /g/ finally broke me.

I'm not too fussed on GFX, the most I'd be doing is streaming some sports occasionally.

The T410 I'm looking at has a 256mb geforce gfx card lol

The cheapest T420 on ebay atm is $590 including postage. This includes the Intel 3000 card. Too expensive imo,
>>
>>43215505
It was an honest question. Why? Tell me why you spend days scouring eBay for a dirty laptop that's 10 years old. Tell me why you obsessively switch out every single component to squeeze the last drop of performance out of your geriatric machines. But above all of that explain how this makes you superior to anyone.

I fucking own a colorware t60 so it's not like I'm some idiot. I'm just not a foaming freak like all of you.
>>
>>43215499
I don't know about other people, but the specs are more than enough for my usage.
>>
>>43215499
Build quality and decent power to price ratio.
>>
>>43215499
You seem to almost understand. I guess I'd add on "great GNU/Linux compatibility and documentation" to your reasons.

Because of the cult following ThinkPads have, you can find answers to some pretty obscure problems you urn into.
>>
>>43215499
I think a majority of /g/ is made up of poor NEETs (no offense intended, I'm a NEET myself) and that makes used ThinkPads appealing. Companies by them in bulk because they're business-class laptops. After the company decides they're old and order their employees new ThinkPads, there are suddenly hundreds of ThinkPads on eBay. At this very moment you can get a ThinkPad with a sandy bridge CPU, discrete GPU, and 8GB of RAM for under $500.

I think all this probably also applies to the Dell and HP equivalents of ThinkPads
>>
>>43215593
i can afford a newer laptop, but my T60 really does everything i need from a laptop, the only downside being less battery life, but i've not yet been in a situation where i haven't been able to plug in somewhere
basically, it's cheap and adequate, and the keyboard is SO much better than anything i've tried in recent years
>>
>>43215499
>as far as specifications are concerned
being this pleb

you can't really do a ThinkPad justice by spelling out its specs, nigga. for one thing the keyboard is fucking peerless, the build quality is to this day one of the very best (at least all the models that /g/ recommends), and OS support is just unmatched. What good will a laptop built on the latest platform do you when you can't even utilize it to its full potential because of the shittastic modern OSes available today? Not to mention the rest of the hardware is often shit. Shit keyboard. Shit display. Shit expandability. ThinkPads are old, but they are dependable in a way that nearly all modern computers are not. They look damn good as well.
>>
>>43215676
I got a T60p that disappointed me quite a bit. I didn't really trust that an SSD and more RAM would fix all my issues with it, so I just saved up and got a newer ThinkPad instead. I'm mostly happy with my T420, but I honestly don't like laptops that much in the first place.

>>
>>43215826
An upgrade from 512mb to 2GB did wonders for my $13 r60.
>>
>>43215841
I put CrunchBang on there. It's a lightwight distro so I didn't think there'd be any issues. When pressing keyboard shortcuts like Super-F for file manager or Super-W for web browser, it just took way too long to open, and it couldn't handle many tabs being open in the browser.

I have a WD Velociraptor as my CrunchBang HDD in my desktop and most likely a 5400rpm HDD in the T60p, so that alone was likely the cause for the difference in loading times. Aside from the crummy drive, it only has 1GB of RAM instead of 3GB of RAM.

I don't have an income, but if I ever do I plan on upgrading the T60p to its max potential to see what could've been. I like the look and feel a bit better than my T420's, I wish I could just shove the specs of the T420 into the T60p.
>>
>>43215883
more RAM would probably help a lot considering how RAM-heavy web browsers have become
>>
>>43215894
That's true, but it was still pretty frustrating how I could count multiple second after pressing a shortcut before the thing would appear. I had only really experienced that issue on Windows before.

Next time I play with my T60p I'll probably try to put Arch on it. I haven't spent much time with Arch, but I believe if I really apply myself I can get an autistic setup like Arch and a tiling WM to run pretty smoothly.
>>
Looking for a laptop under $800 to do some midlevel gaming on. Not trying to run crysis or anything, but I also want to be able to play some recentish games without a problem? i'm considering buying the equipment to do a hard bios mod on my x230 since the cocksuckers at lenovo have a wireless card whitelist and it's the only way to install an 802.11ac minipcie card in my laptop and have it function.

just curious if anyone here has done this before.

I tried an X1 Carbon at the Microsoft Store last night for shits and giggles. I don't think the clickpad is as bad as everybody on /g/ makes it seem like, but I definitely don't like the keyboard over my T420's.

Speaking of, I upgraded to a T420 from a T61 and I was a little disappointed with the build quality difference. I was bothered at first by the 16:9 screen, but it's not a hard adjustment to get used to. I still prefer 16:10 for laptops, though. I also miss all my activity LED's. Going from a lot of activity LED's to only two of them is depressing. And finally, KEYBOARD FLEX. My T61 had no keyboard flex whatsoever but I was really put off by seeing the T420 has a slightly flexible keyboard. It's not a deal breaker, but it is a little unfortunate seeing the build quality of these great laptops slowly decline
>>
>>43213931
will thinkpads ever be un-dead?

I gave up on them after they introduced that model with the clickpad. Still use my X201, but I've no hope for the future.

Is the keyboard properly set and both screws actually tightened down?

I've missed one or both screws a couple times when putting back together my T420 and that makes a huge difference if they aren't tightened down, especially the one underneath the trackpoint buttons.

Yesterday I finally got my first thinkpad, an x200. It was a pain to get one in my country, going to every used computer shop and browsing e-stores for months (I'm from Chile, South America), but I got one for 135 USD approx without charger (the charger costed me about 28 USD). I'm using it since last night, uninstalled windows 7 and now I'm running LXLE 14.04 (everything worked out of the box). I'm fucking in love with this machine.

I'll begin saving for an 8-cell battery, and maybe an SSD.

Thanks for all the advice you gave me on choosing and buying this. You /g/uys are awesome!

Not yet, but it being slow is not one of the main problems. Biggest problem is that the screen is fucked up. Is there a way to clean the backlight layer of an LCD? I cant fin anything on that topic.

OK. A few tips for once you open it up.

The silvery polarizer on the back of the LCD-proper scratches if you touch it with practically anything. If canned air can't take any stuck-on dirt off of it, cut a Q-tip in half, stick some double-stick tape on the stick (not the cotton) and try to pull it off carefully under a magnifying glass without touching the polarizer. Obviously, don't get fingerprints on it! Wear unpowdered latex gloves.

The layer right under the LCD is either a prism or a diffuser depending on the screen model. The diffusers are coated polyester; don't use the q-tip trick because if you do accidentally touch it with tape, you'll probably rip the coating off. canned air only.

The prisms are polyester. No coating. But they scratch easy.

Dirt under the prism layer won't show unless it's huge or is sticking layers together.

Hopefully canned air alone will fix you up. Unless you scratch the hell out of something or fuck up a diffuser, nothing is overly fragile. Don't use chemicals! Use clean air and be careful.

I've had a used T61 for a year and a half, and I bought a WXGA+ T400 a few days ago for just $46 plus shipping. It appears to boot to BIOS, and the seller has been left positive feedback for selling others at the same price. All it needs is more RAM and a boot drive, but I've already got those covered.

>>43219931
No. Unless everything is intact and in excellent condition, has 4+GB RAM (remember, it's DDR2) and a newer hard drive, stay away. I think the T400 is beginning to supplant the T61 as the budget 14.4" Core2 Duo workhorse at that price range. You may not be able to get as good a deal as I did on the T400, but just don't pay more than $100 for a T61 at this point, if that.
>>
>>43221387
[under the prism is another diffuser, then the clear acrylic waveguide, then the rear lambertian reflector behind that. Dirt there isn't going to be visible unless it's like full of boogers or something]
>>
>>43221387
Thanks! It is the UXGA Flexview screen if this helps. I'm not sure if I should open it, it seems to be dieing already: when I close or open the screen sometimes black and white lines appear in a part of it. Any way of fixing that?
>>
>>43221449
Oh, that's not good. Very not good. Yes, it's dying.
>>
>>43221515
So it would be easier to just get a new screen.
>>
>>43221543
Definitely easier. The lines possibly mean one of the heat-bonded ribbon cables is coming apart, and there's no DIY fix for that. Once the connection breaks, it's done.

I bought a used Thinkpad x201 Tablet. Got Debian installed with BSPWM and I'm pretty satisfied.

Only problems are:
1) Battery i got was kinda old, so doesn't hold charge that long. Looked online and official batteries go for over $100, and third party ones get shit reviews.

2) Tablet portion worked right away, except I can't get programs to recognize the eraser button on the stylus.
