Welcome to /flt/, we are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:

0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

>fearmongering a shit sytemd troll, you asked for it

Reminder that systemd is a fiasco.

Is developed by a elite and only the elite has the time and the funds to check the source code (by a corporation that makes business with the government). Many programs (therefore, Linux distributions) adopted systemd as a way to use other programs that systemd devoured. Making a cascade of dependence from which there is no escape.

Microsoft now could make possible a takeover on Linux thanks to systemD homogenizing Linux and the constant use of BSD license that allows privative software being built atop which strangles the open source community competition against takeovers from corporations ("embrace, extend, extinguish" all over).

Also is a security liability. Their proponents never speak about leaving free to attack the systemd-init that runs every daemon, and the shit is even connected to the network.

As init is the second most powerful program in linux, just below the kernel. The kernel code has so many eyes on it, but not that many on systemd. We bash about openssl/gnutls holes all the day, but none of the holes could be as nearly detrimental as a hole in pid 1, either accidental or intentional. Systemd serves as inetd and listens on network sockets.

The new systemd specific user switching is more insecure because PID1 constantly runs root programs with a massive attack surface. While only systemd-init is PID 1 and the rest of systemd does not run at PID1, everything uses systemd-init functions.

Add that it has su-like functionality in direct contact with programs that are network-facing and you have a security hole.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux,
is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux.
Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component
of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell
utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day,
without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU
which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are
not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a
part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system
that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run.
The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself;
it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is
normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system
is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux"
distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Rate my security pasta:

Common Sense runs naively with GNU/Linux and the example you just should is quite valid, but not if you use GNU/Linux (as a part of Common Sense 2016)

>Get an independent distro that suits you best
>Use a secure DNS
>Use flashblock and adblock plus. Privacy Badger and HTTPS enforcer is also recommended
>Optionally use js blocker extensions like uMatrix or noscripts
>Never keep youself logged in to any online services like facebook, google or others
>Enable UFW and only install software packages from your distros repository
>Use an offline password manager, enable 2-stage password authentication if necessary
>Encrypt your Hard drive
>Learn and enable SELinux or Apparmor
>Optionally use a proxy VPN
>Use a hardware firewalled router. Ask your ISP to make your IP dynamic instead of static
>Avoid using proprietary software. If you have to, try to sandbox your activity

I can assure you have eliminated at least more than half of the possible attack surface if you follow my instruction.

Please understand that security is not a download-click-okay-reboot process. You cannot install security. Keep away from snake oil antiviruses and shills

The only real argument would be higher internet usage, which is valid of course.
To be more secure we need to block all outgoing traffic. That's were other addons come in place (although ublock origin does some from what I heard).

The point is, hiding tracks you, blocking not. Sure you can block requests, but you can block the requested javascript, that allows tracking, which makes the whole difference.

Hey guys, I'm new to Debian.

I'm trying to open Nautilus as root through the terminal. Installed gksu through aptitude. However when I try

gksu nautilus

nothing happens and the terminal moves on to the next line, as if it had already done what i told it to do.

If I try gksu nautilus instead, it throws me this error:

(nautilus:20470): Gtk-WARNING **: Failed to register client: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.gnome.SessionManager was not provided by any .service files

How do I fix it?

Linux is the name of the kernel that Linus Torvalds developed starting in 1991. The operating system in which Linux is used is basically GNU with Linux added. To call the whole system “Linux” is both unfair and confusing. Please call the complete system GNU/Linux, both to give the GNU Project credit and to distinguish the whole system from the kernel alone.

Is there a reason why Clementine hangs at 99% updating library? Again, calm down. I can't do things as fast as with Moc. If you know how to change the directory very fast in ncmpcpp, without restarting the server, tell me, don't bully.

I haven't said anything negative on ncmpcpp, yet, just that Moc is better.
>>
>>53671911
>I haven't said anything negative on ncmpcpp
You said it is incompatible, which it isn't.

If you really have such a retarded system of storing your files then just symlink all of your locations in to one place, point mpd/ncmpcpp to that directory and set ncmpcpp to update everytime it open.

Your tiresome backpeddling is evidence enough you don't care though. Again, your lack of knowing how to do something with one tool doesn't mean another tool is better, it just means you are ignorant about what your existing tools can do.

What do I install to have a proper clipboard in linux?

I have selection-to-clipboard loaded under URxvt.perl-ext-common and while it's great I can now copy from terminal to browser I've noticed 2 major issues with clipboard over all.

1. If I copy something, anything, from I think anything, X or CLI, onto the clipboard then close the thing I copied it from before pasting it I lose it.

2. Not all things seem to copy to the correct clipboards, eg. if I using Thunar right click on something in dropbox and say copy public link, I am able to paste it into my browser but cannot paste it into my terminal (for irc etc). I have to first paste it into my browser then recopy it out of the browser for it to work to the terminal.

Both extremely annoying.

i use parcellite with

>>
>>53673170
IU do use shift insert. When I say I cannot paste it into my terminal I mean it's on the wrong clipboard, ie. I 'copy public link to clipboard' if I attempt to paste it into my terminal with shift+insert it uses the last thing I had on my clipboard instead, but if I paste it in my browser it works properly.

Problem is not my method it's got to do with linux having multiple clipboards and them not syncing. And not retaining.

>>
>>53674423

The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself;
it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is
normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system
is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux"
distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
