First, a little history. The X window system escaped from Project Athena
at MIT where it was being held in isolation. When notified, MIT stated
publicly that "MIT assumes no resonsibility...". This is a very
disturbing statement. It then infiltrated Digital Equipment Corporation,
where it has since corrupted the technical judgement of this organization.
After sabotaging Digital Equipment Corporation, a sinister X consortium
was created to find a way to use X as part of a plan to dominate and
control interactive window systems. X windows is sometimes distributed
by this secret consortium free of charge to unsuspecting victims. The
destructive cost of X cannot even be guessed.
X is truly obese - whether it's mutilating your hard disk or actively
infesting your system, you can be sure it's up to no good. Innocent
users need to be protected from this dangerous virus. Even as you read
this, the X source distribution and the executable environment is being
maintained on hundreds of computers, maybe even your own.
Digital Equipment Corporation is already shipping machines that carry
this dreaded infestation. It must be destroyed.
This is what happens when software with good intentions goes bad. It
victimizes innocent users by distorting their perception of what is and
what is not good software. This malignant window system must be
destroyed.
Ultimately DEC and MIT must be held accountable for this heinous *software
crime*, brought to justice, and made to pay for a *software cleanup*. Until
DEC and MIT answer to these charges, they both should be assumed to be
protecting dangerous software criminals.

I always liked the old school Athena widgets more than anything that came later on. Just can't stand all this new-fangled Gtk, Qt, Wx, etc. I guess the old Tcl/Tk Unix look is alright though. It's about the only one that seems to have any kind of personality and not trying to be a Microsoft copycat. Well there was also XForms and the NeXT stuff.
But yeah, Athena just has that nice Unixy old tyme feeling. X may have seemed bloated back then, but it's nothing at all compared to the monster it became.

Here's another project that got corrupted with bad toolkits. Not only did they use the ugly modern crap, they also made the in-game icons 3D and overly busy. I guess they're just hoplessly attracted to shiny commercial software trends and have no value for simplicity and pure beauty.

most people work in terminal emulators inside of a graphical environment, not just directly at a command line; in the modern day it's often limiting to work in a TTY
however if you know you don't need a graphical environment, you can really cut down on resource usage by just working in a TTY

The wayland protocol will eventually make X unnecessary but it will take some time. Open source graphics drivers already have stable wayland support, there's a few tiling compositors that are fairly stable, DEs like GNOME3 and KDE5 are working on wayland support, but with so many applications it's always hard to move on to something else. Software libraries like SDL can help with the transition though.
Alternatively, if like the idea of multiple "windows" but want to stick to terminal for most things you can use tmux. I would recommend tmux anyway because when you're working with servers it's amazingly useful

If you think X is bad from a user perspective, let me tell you, it's even worse when you have to use it as a programmer. Especially when you want to do anything with the clipboard (which X doesn't actually have). Thankfully you normally don't have to, cause toolkits like GTK and Qt provide their own wrapper.
