What were computers at your school like? Did you do anything to prove how much of a 1337 hax0r you were? Did you work for the school's tech department?

My highschool was using old powermacs running mac OS 8.6.They left appletalk on and had Hypercard installed for the programming classes so I wrote a little program to make other computer start beeping nonstop or shutdown.

Only certain applications were allowed to run based on some ID tags that I could edit with Resedit, so I made Unreal Tournament and some other games look like calculator. The computer lab turned into a LAN party at lunch after that. I used the same trick to resource swap an unimportant system extension with a keylogger and got all the teacher's passwords. I found out about the Canadian Computing competition by reading my principal's Email. I came in 3rd in the country which got me a scholorship and acceptance to my dream school despite mediocre grades.

Dell Optiplex was the standard issue for my cities public schools. You could pop them open and take some ram home easily.

ThinkPads and custom built pieces of shit for the students, teachers had dual socket HP/Dell workstations and HP convertible tablets. Windows everything.

Single-socket HP and Dell workstations dual-booting Fedora and Windows 7 in the engineering buildings, Macs everywhere else.

Why do so many people take ram out of school computers? They aren't yours.

I got admin rights on the network once or twice, that was fun, but I told the school about it once my friends started installing steam on people's computers. It was weird stuff
>>
Anybody else get free stuff from the IT dept? In 08 I got some 512mb DDR sticks.

The computers at my school were so old that during my senior year in high school (7 years ago) the fire marshal deemed them all a fire hazard due to them all having bulged and leaking capacitors, and so they were all replaced.

All replaced with Windows XP government second-hand systems with netburst P4's :^)

Oh, and they were still running Novell at the time, too. Prior to this most of the environment was running Windows 98 with a Novell server on the back-end. I am fairly certain it wasn't for another five years that they finally retired the Novell system.

Because they are poorfag tier and will settle for shitty ram.
>>
We had a bunch of really shitty Compaqs with Windows 98.

Fun Fact: 9x is ASCII, and doesn't speak Unicode. Open up a DOS prompt and create a file or folder with the character alt-255. DOS recognizes that character but Windows didn't, meaning the file or folder would show up in explorer, with that character rendered as an underscore, but could not be opened, moved, renamed, deleted, or anything. If you tried, windows would pop up an error dialog saying it couldn't find the file.

So the day before some bigwigs from the district were gonna visit, we made a folder on every machine's desktop called kiddie_porn. The staff couldn't figure out how to delete them and spent all night reinstalling windows on a few dozen machines.

because I could. Is it right? No. Did I lose any sleep over it? Also no. My school was a shithole, fuck those guys. Stole a Duron 750 out of one, too.

Lets see...

486 DX2-66/8MB/320MB
DOS 6.2 + WFW 3.11 + Netware 4?

> 1337 h4x0r?
Eh, not really. But apparently I knew Netware better than the people that installed it. ACL's weren't setup correctly, and I was able to bring up rconsole and do stuff to servers / workstations in other schools.

Yeah, I know. I'm old.
