First of all, it's not GNU/Linux. It's Linux.

Intended for users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

If you are serious about switching to Linux, use it exclusively for 2 weeks, avoid windows dual booting for that period of time, or it's likely you will start retreating back to windows instead of getting used to Linux as your new home and working on making it feel the way you want it.

It is recommended to experience distro of your choice in a VM.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R33sFFhgkWk

>Recommended for beginners:
*buntus except vanilla Ubuntu (Unity), LinuxMint, openSUSE

Before asking, please find the answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from windows will be unavailable, (although maybe wine can make up for it.)

I've made this mistake.
Currently have Windows dual booted with Debian and even though I'm only browsing the web, I'm on my Windows partition.

debian is not the right choice for a new user anyway. *buntu for 6 weeks, then debian stable for 10 weeks and then debian testing forever or until you feel the need to install gentoo.

Guy from previous thread:

Can /g/ help me?
I've got problem with my Xorg eating my whole CPU (some AMD C80 crap on shitty netbook). Never had this problem before and I thought it's because XFCE had some issues with me. So I've installed LXDE. Same problem. Than I've reinstalled my linux for a fresh install of bunsenlabs (previously crunchbang) since I wanted to do that for a long time now.
Sadly my problem reappeared with openbox. Sometimes Xorg goes stable after 2 hours or so.

Nothing was able to help me online. People seams to have the same problem but solutions that have worked for them didn't work for me. Friend told me this might be due to new kernel that doesn't support my drivers for xorg properly which makes my DE being calculated by CPU not by GPU but this doesn't seams to be the case since even if it were to be calculated by CPU I shouldn't get so sloppy sluggish performance out of it anyway.

Please help me /g/ you guys are my last hope.

kernel : 3.16.0-4-amd64 (previously 3.8)
vga: ATI Radeon HD 7290
compositor : compton
drivers : right now radeon but problem ocurres also on fglrx

Some /g/entelman told me it might be a vidia problem but it shouldn't I've been working on this netbook with linux for 1.5 year and hadn't got any problems before
>>
when I use antergos, the default login screen takes fucking forever to change the clock to the screen where you enter your password, and 99% of the time it fucking crashes and shows a white screen. is it just me or is this a problem for others? and how the fuck do you login as root on antergos? why do you use such and old kernel ?

sometimes catalyst works with a specific kernel. Depends on the version of your driver of course.
>>

It could be a driver problem -- I don't use Display Manager myself, it's faster to login through tty and manually run startx.
>>
>>50757754
Because I've switched to debian stable based distro (burnsenlab/crunchbang) after problem ocurred on Xubuntu 15.04.
I might update my kernel tommorow I'll be glad if you could recomment me one. Rather use something stable/tested though

hi flt,

My pc is pretty decent, 8ram, r9 280x, cpu forgot,

Windows runs smooth. I installed linux mint and now I have dual boot.

Now when I use linux it's pretty slow. Examples:
Typed text sometimes lags, appears late.
New tab on firefox animation lags
General lag, like when moving windows around.
Folder browsing lag, double clicking different color, etc.

I made sure my partitions got enough size so that shouldn be the problem. Everything is up to date.

Also Its my first install so I have little experience.

Suppose I wanted to make a script that would automatically ssh into my tmux session on another computer.

But automatically as in entering my password and everything. I found something like this:

#!/usr/bin/expect
set pass "mysecret"

spawn /usr/bin/passwd

expect "password: "
send "$pass"
expect "password: "
send "$pass"

But I'm a little confused by it. What is the purpose of doing expect twice? If I'm correct I would have to do something like:

#!/bin/bash
set user username
set pass your-pass
set host the-host-address

spawn ssh $user@$host

expect "password: "
send $your-pass

[rest of script goes here]

And that would work, right?

A somewhat silly question in this thread, but under the Spirit of the Original FLT thread as a haeven for all of UNIX and *NIX, I have a BSD question.

Does any one have any good advice on setting up a system for live audio chat on FreeBSD? I would like a system that can be easy to set up on some ends, though I would be glad to run a server. It was requested that I communicate with non-techie family members, and thus I cannot rely on them to mess around with config files and daemons too much.

Ideally, of course, it would be secure and private as can be, but any suggestions, particularly with some evaluation, are appreciated.

I agree with >>50758379. Hypothetically you should I imagine be able to make a partition on Windows (but it would be probably a bad sort), and then bootstrap a linux file structure into it. Ordinarily, then you would chroot into it (I imagine possible under cgwin), and run programs to setup bootloader and passwords et cetera.

It might be possible, but you would be doing something very experimental. USB drive (or SD card or whatever) would probably be leaps and bounds easier.

Hi Linuxfriends, maybe you can help me out.
I'm a Fedora user, but I recently decided to try dual-booting Arch. I followed the wiki and everyhting went fine. However, I'm having problems with Grub. When I install Grub from Arch it causes some weird problems in Fedora, e.g. wi-fi and sound don't work. When I try installing it from Fedora I can't even boot into Arch anymore, I get a kernel panic error message right after the Grub selection screen.

It might have to do with both partitions being LVM (same volume group, same HDD), but before I install everything from scratch I'd at least like to know what the problem was.

Any ideas?
>>
>>50758322
>Make a key and use ssh-copy-id
I-I did, it has a passphrase.

I just was asking if that would work, I know technically it should be
#!/bin/bash
set user username
set pass your-pass
set host the-host-address

spawn ssh $user@$host

expect "Enter passphrase for key '/home/user/.ssh/id_rsa': "
send $your-pass

But I'm just trying to ask about the syntax of that part. And why the other one has two expect/send lines. Is that necessary? Why?
>>
>>50758057
That's not Linus - it's a fake. Lurk more, newfriend.
In all reality, yes. It probably would be languishing with HURD, seeing as serious development of HURD stopped after the GNU userland and Linux were ported to each other.
As a rebuttal, where would Linux be without GNU? It would have died in 1992, living its entire life as a Finn student's hobby project
>>
>>50757591

If you are serious about using GNU/Linux, then get a book on it and actually read. Installing the most dumbed-down nerf'd distribution you can will not help you just like it doesn't help that Windows/OSX is a pile of complexity and you still need a book to figure out how to set security policy.

If Windows users only give Windows points and Linux users give points to both, Linux will get a small percentage as a result. The users are still alive and well. Don't trust charts too blindly.

There are two operating systems there marked as 0.01 percentage. SymbianOS and DoCoMo.

SymbianOS has 25.6 M requests
DoCoMo has 17.9 M requests

Linux excluding Android, Other, Ubuntu and Fedora has 26.14 M requests

These are marked as 0.00% even though they are more than zero. The total percentage has been calculated from numbers other than zero. They have cut the numbers to two decimals before adding them up. Having many things 0.001 ultimately makes it 0.010

Hey /g/ need some advice. Looking to install linux on my laptop

I had kde on a netbook before and was wondering what would work best on an asus laptop with a celeron and 4gb of ram, I pretty much only use it for web browsing and light school work

heard mint and xubutnu were good, any recs?
>>
>>50764515
are you having serious performance issues? if not, then i don't thing performance increases is a justifiable reason for switching distros. i would imagine that the biggest consumers or resources on any system would be browsers, gaymen, 4K10p chinese cartoons, rendering sfm dickgirl pron, stuff like that. with that much ram and a decent processor, the DE would not really contribute much to any potential resource shortages.
if you want to make Mint more lightweight, you can switch to a different DE or WM, you don't have to switch to Debian just for that. It's not entirely accurate to think of Mint as a middleman between you and Debian. It's derived from Ubuntu which is derived from Debian, and it uses .deb packages, but it has a design philosophy and UX that separates it from both. All distros do. If you have been using Mint for a long time and are happy with it, you probably will be happy with it for a long time. If you haven't used it for a long time, maybe try installing Debian on a new computer or an old computer that isn't a primary box. If you are feeling particularly adventurous, try Fedora or Arch or Slackware. You may like them. But I find that once you get engrained in a distro, the positive reinforcement feedback loop makes it your distro for life. And even Ubuntu can (probably) be turned into a "lightweight" system if you hack it enough.
>>
>>50765323
If you're looking for lightweight xubuntu is probably your best bet. Mint is great if you're coming from Windows. Debian if you don't care for the polished UI. Arch if you really know what you're doing.

KDE is a desktop environment. Mint and Xubuntu are distibutions. Mint ships with lots of different DEs, Xubuntu is Ubuntu with Xfce. Without the friendly linux people on /g/ (and the not so friendly ones), I'd probably still be working a menial good-for-nothing job at Radio Shack, trying to make ends meet. Thanks to you guys (and a bit of the ol' headstrong from me), I'm officially starting, in two week's time, my dream job of working in the video game industry. Yeah, I know, the video game industry is trash, and they overwork you, and all that, but god damn I'd rather work at a company that I enjoy using the products of than a place where I make a product I couldn't care less about and get paid a bit more.

And it's really all thanks to you guys. So keep it up, and know that there are some of us out there who are really grateful for it.

often example config lines are commented out which "deactivates" them. if you delete the # at the beginning of the line, then that line will be "activated". use your common sense. the comments should tell you what the line does.

the issue is new users will approach linux like windows. expect everything to be the same and wont take the time to actually use it properly.
by limiting yourself to only use it you atleast demonstrate a will to do things differently.
instead of installing linux, wondering why your favourite piece of software is not present and then removing linux. by forcing yourself to work with what you have you will expand your knowlege and know how the software ecosystem in linux works. learn how to use the terminal maybe to automate mundane tasks. or maybe even use a different torrent client than utorrent. just because you gave it a chance.

>First of all, it's not GNU/Linux. It's Linux.

What do you mean OP? Do you mean the kernel? Yes, the kernel is called Linux.

If you're referring to an operating system that includes the Linux kernel, there are A LOT of them that all go by different names. Some such as Debian are considered to be a version of the GNU operating system and therefore go by the name GNU/Linux.

So I don't think you're correct in your statement. Linux is a kernel. Sometimes it is GNU/Linux.
