Prometeus is okay whenever I don't have to speak with Maounique at support desk.
RamNode sent me spam and denied it, Nick_A is abusive towards customers. Cancelled my VPS.
HostHatch support is really nice and quality network too, but the abuse desk's lack of understanding made me leave.
123systems/ChicagoVPS is total garbage.
ThrustVPS (rip) had frequent downtime. Thanks iomart for ruining a good provider.
LeaseWeb nothing but good experiences.
Online.net/OVH/Hetzner.de only bad experiences with support and abuse desks, often also problems with network.

IRC yes, torrents "maybe". HostHatch doesn't want any DMCA notice at all, they also insist on keeping their abuse@ email in WHOIS which makes them liable. They will tolerate few incidents but if you get frequent complaints they will terminate your contract.

I ran into trouble with HostHatch when I wanted to run a public BitTorrent tracker like PublicBT or istole.it with no magnet links or torrent files. Said they would not allow it on their servers, despite being protected under DMCA Safe Harbors for a customer running a "search engine".

>>47827819
Alex de Joode is a really nice person to work with, indeed. I'd only use LeaseWeb's NL location because that's the best one out of them and it's enough for me.

I can give you a free 1U colocation at Portlane (Sweden) if you have a good (political) reason for it that I can support. Colocating 1U isn't much more expensive than renting a dedicated server, 1U starts from 40-60 EUR per month.

My biggest grudge with Vultr is their restrictive AUP.

>B. Defame, abuse, harass, stalk, threaten or otherwise violate the legal rights (such as rights of privacy and publicity) of others.
>C. Publish, post, upload, distribute, traffic or disseminate any defamatory, obscene, or otherwise unlawful content, such as child pornography or virtual child pornography.
>D. Publish, post, upload, distribute or disseminate any topic, name, material or information that incites discrimination, hate or violence towards one person or a group because of their belonging to a race, a religion or a nation.
>J. Restrict or inhibit any other user from using and enjoying the Services.
>N. Create a false identity for the purpose of misleading others.

These can be problematic for IRC network owners. Some of those are also protected by freedom of speech, so Vultr shouldn't be an arbitrator to censor things they don't like.

>>47827948
You're welcome. If you're going with HostHatch, say to Emil J. there that Partyvan / Juuso Lapinlampi sent you if you see him. I've gotten nice discounts before.

>>
>>47827724
This is a terribad idea. Never host anything from home. Get a 5 or 10$ VPS. Linode is a tad pricey but rock solid and a great network. Digital Ocean if you want to save a few bucks and are okay with a slower network and downtime a few times per year.
>>
>>47827999
I don't work at LeaseWeb, but I have lots of experience with them. For example if you want to run a Tor exit at LeaseWeb or handle abuse related to it, you can contact Alex de Joode directly. Works nicely like a support backdoor.

Potentially a stupid question, but would getting a raspberry pi 2 and using it as an always on server be viable?

I have a domain hosted on a shared server already, but the response time is too terrible.

I imagine security wouldn't be a huge issue as I would not connect it to my main computer.

Another reason I thought of this was maybe I can host a couple of other sites that I might want to mess around with, without the restrictions on how many domains I am allowed.

Is my newness showing?

>but would getting a raspberry pi 2 and using it as an always on server be viable?

It's feasible to do, but I think we're about 2 years away from having low-price-point SBCs that can really do a server right.

We'll need a new generation of low-price-point SBCs that have SATA support, gigabit ethernet, maybe a real-time clock, etc. that will really make it a good, well-rounded home server platform.

We're getting there. Check out ODROID-C1 ($35), which has gigabit ethernet. Banana Pi has SATA, but it's $50 not $35. To me, it feels like we need about 2 more years for it to all come together at the $35 price point.

Why isn't there yet a guide for choosing a server host provider?
>>
>>47829488
Servers are mostly subjective and people can have different experiences. Not everyone can afford LeaseWeb's cheapest 30 EUR dedicated either, as arguably nobody has ever had an issue with LeaseWeb generally.

Cheap dedicated providers like OVH, Online.net and Hetzner usually suck with support. It's pay for what you get.

The current state of respectable VPS providers is quite sad. None of them have been fit for me, so I'm only doing dedicated/colo right now.

I had an idea that I could pay for someone's 1U colocation at Portlane if someone wanted to setup VPNs or virtual servers on it for /g/.
>>
>>47829488
In other words, if you make a guide someone is going to disagree with you anyway.

What are you looking for in a server? Network quality, good support, managed services?

>>47829539
I'll clarify, if someone wants to host VPNs or virtual servers for /g/ then it doesn't necessarily have to be located in Portlane. I'll also accept NFOrce and LeaseWeb NL datacenters.

Other than hosting minecraft, what do you need a powerful server for? Our shit tier server does anything we might need, which is web hosting, file hosting and ts3. Hosting minecraft is a mostly unpleasant experience too.

What do you use your VNC for? Torrenting? I just use a free vnc when I need to be anonymous.

Also, has anyone tested how fast the DO "ssd storage" is? Is there any way to get more storage to use with your DO server? Is there any way to copy other peoples images at DO, alternatively an easy way to set up VNC and a desktop enviorment? (I succeded once, but it broke on reboot. Preferably no "vnc needs is own account" silliness.
>>
>>47829732
$1-$2.5 per Mbps is a reasonable transit price. $20 is not.

Perhaps I'm the oddball, I don't just want a high-speed connection but I also want good peering.

>>47829734
RamNode, HostHatch, anything from LowEndBox. As long as you don't run into trouble with abuse desk, you should be okay.

If your site is small, you're not going to consume a lot of CPU cycles for the webserver (at least not with nginx). nginx also comes with own caching options, so you don't even need Varnish with nginx.

>What do you use your VNC for

>>
>>47829606
I was looking for something cheap and reliable. Just for use as a VPN tunnel endpoint and random stuff, nothing serious.
I've used Digital Ocean in the past and they've been fine (but fucked up backups once and I left, plus my coupons ran out).
>>
>>47827724
Yeah, you're fine. I host a business brochure site on a comcast home connection. Debian virtual machine, open up port 80 to it.
>>
>>47829775
DigitalOcean's disk I/O is generally lower than what you get from a typical LowEndBox offer. I don't have a source to cite now so take this as a grain of salt, but I'm sure I've seen multiple benchmarks.

>>47829794
While RamNode is constantly being praised by the idiots at LowEndBox/LowEndTalk, they actually also get a lot of DDoS attacks. Although the attacks have not targeted me or my host node, my IRC server has still disconnected and delinked from the IRC network about three times last month.
>>
what vps has the best performance for money? That lowendbox site is super messy.

>>47829794
Sorry, I forgot to continue >>47829861.

I had over 370 days of uptime on Prometeus. Network's meh though. HostHatch has quality datacenters (well, their NL datacenter Serverius is not top of the line). Anything from LowEndBox that works for you, really.

>>47829881
RamNode or HostHatch in European locations I guess, from my experience. I dislike both of them personally. I don't have experience of US locations.

Go with a provider which provides an SSD, 1 Gbps connection and an E3 processor if you want the performance.
>>
Online.net and OVH require to cancel any servers before 20th of month.[1][2] They will send collection agencies after you if you don't pay for the next month after 20th. Always read the Terms of Service that you agree to before ordering.

https://hosthatch.com/kvm-ssd-vps
>>
>>47830086
Alright.. But wont it be slow to virtualize twice?

Host virtualizes KVM
KVM virtualizes windows
Or am I just retarded?
>>
>>47830034
I don't like HostHatch for reasons mentioned earlier in this thread. Emil J.'s dedication at HostHatch support is admirable, but my issues were about HostHatch's inability to defend freedom of speech and a BitTorrent tracker project of mine. Political censorship without breaching AUP, kind of.

They did say that the AUP template was copypasted from another provider so it was not something they would completely agree with. They even went as far as offering me dedicated IPs directly from the datacenter instead of having their abuse@ email in WHOIS when SWIP was not an option.

For note, one of my servers was falsely suspended for "CPU abuse" despite the server being powered off and never utilizing CPU highly. It didn't cause me an inconvenience however.

What Emil J. really succeeded at was working with upstream to fix a peering issue, where Level 3/Global Crossing had an extra 100 ms hop with TeliaSonera customers. That's the best thing I've ever seen a VPS support desk do (compared to Prometeus which requested me to cancel for a full refund).

>>47830060
I got the full speed from them (Portlane). I did report a bug with erroneous sysctl.conf settings to them earlier about slower download speeds in Stockholm location, but pic related says they would have worked on it.

>>47830146
Host virtualizes Windows.
>>
>>47829784
Thanks, I'll pick Hosthatch storage vps for now.
The choice between KVM and OpenVZ in RamNode are confusing, so I'll get Hosthatch.

Just to be sure I asked the sales person about that torrent thing via email a few minutes ago.

$10 / month for 512 MB RAM, 500 GB HDD, and 2 TB bandwidth sound great.
Well, maybe I'll upgrade to $15 if I need more memory for 1 GB RAM later.
>>
>>47830165
What the actual fuck is "CPU abuse"? I can't run my VM at 100% 24/7? I seriously hope they're not that retarded.
>>
>>47830177
OpenVZ is vomit, always go with KVM for uptime if you need it.

You don't need to contact sales, I know HostHatch will allow torrents in all locations as long as you don't cause them abuse notices.

Pic related is what they think about Tor exits. In another ticket Mike W. says they can tolerate few abuse notices but after that the only option is to stop.

>>47830212
Most VPS providers don't allow you to utilize CPU 100% 24/7. It's reasonable to say that you can utilize all cores for short bursts (for few hours maybe), but below that you are expected to stay under 50%-100% CPU utilization for one core for 24/7 operation.

There are some (in my opinion overrated) VPS providers like BuyVM's abusive cores plans which allow you to use CPU as much as you'd like.

>>
>>47831067
LeaseWeb if 29 EUR/month is "value". Quality support on quality network, you pay for what you get. If that's too much, you're better off finding a VPS instead.

Online.net and OVH if you don't care about horrible support and abuse desks. Also, they'll send collection agencies after you if you don't cancel before 20th of month or pay for next month after 20th. Terrible network too. This includes other branches like Kimsufi and SoYouStart.

Hetzner.de network is even more terrible.
>>
>>47831164
Totally newbie on VPS use here.

What do "abuse desks" mean?
>>
>>47831241
When your hosting provider receives an abuse notice for a subscriber (you) on their connection, they will often contact you and ask you to stop the abusive activity like spam or malware distribution. Things like copyright notices also end up to the abuse desk. The abuse desk will expect you to satisfy the requirements to avoid suspension in 24 hours or so.

Some abuse desks are exceptionally worse and will probably suspend your server first without warning. Other times they'll just tell you to get your data and show the door, again without a warning. OVH and Online.net practices both of these very often.

Someone DDoSing your IP-address might also piss off the abuse desk and tell you to leave. Many providers show no respect for clients there.

Lab rack. Still a work in progress.

- $13.92/year 128mb RamNode
- Kimsufi KS1
- Online.net Kidechire (2e/month dedicated with a gigabit line)
- 3e/year LowEndSpirit
- $5 DigitalOcean from free GitHub credits

Getting rid ot the LowEndSpirit and DO ones when they expire, as they're redundant.

Honestly, I only used the domain name, ssl, & DO vps for $10/m where I host projects, teamspeak, and vpn.>>47831700

Isn't DO against any of this?

Wouldn't know, never read their terms. Going strong for 2 months with no issues.

I'll just drop this here. Should had made the ticket in English.

I like my Online.net server but they reduced the price of their entry level offer from 9.99EUR to 5.99EUR and are still making old clients pay the original price for the exact same machine. They refuse to make any adjustment and I've been a customer for over a year. Probably going to move to a Vultr or DO VPS. Most of my visitors are American or Canadian like me anyways.

I've been wanting to ask, does pomf have dedup?
>>
>>47826862

DigitalOcean 1GB - hosts personal sites for several friends.

Linode 1GB - hosts an in development chatsite for a bunch of furries.

Linode 2GB - hosts a starbound server.

I have a promo deal vps with 1gb ram for about 20usd from weloservers in London. It was alright within the first year, but over the last year it was constantly rebooted without warnings (I complained every time), their support just went to shit. Can not recommend.

Why would you not be allowed to do VoIP on your server?

Hmmmm, the support says storage vps isn't suited for high cpu load.
Should I switch to Hosthatch's KVM VPS ?
$7 / month
2x Intel E5 3.5 GHz+ Core
1 GB RAM
30 GB SSD
2 TB Bandwidth

If I have cpu problems later, I'll switch to Leaseweb's dedicated server for €30 / month.
For safety I'll run the torrent at the end of the month (day 20 - 30) so if rutorrent causes high cpu load and my contract is terminated ASAP I already get my money's worth.

How's Leaseweb's stance on private torrent ?

are there generally good times for snatching kimsufi servers? I've been staring at the KS-4 server forever and it seems whenever i get up to take a piss one came and went

What specs would I need for a chinese cartoon torrent server?

$3.50 monthly

Pomf has no backups. Living on the edge. It's on to-do along with Internet Archive[1] dumps.

Sure, go with KVM.

LeaseWeb is tolerant of anything except IRC servers. They also host a lot of seedboxes. Since LeaseWeb's serves are dedicated, they don't care about CPU usage and you get a bunch of more bandwidth (10 TB/month).
>>
>>47834760
Sorry, misread your post. There is simple software deduplication with MySQL. The server is also being synced to the new server, so there's partial backups for now.

>>47834383
This is what most low-end providers, I am not surprised to see this from Online.net. Assumably you have to cancel your current box and purchase the new one for 5.99 EUR, or better yet find a new provider.
