is VR a fad?

Everything is a fad.

Get over it.
>>
Maybe, but this ten dollar cardboard box is quite nifty

For now, yes. It's too bulky and doesn't really add anything to a game experience. Kinda like 3d. Cool fad, not really useful. It might have some specialized use like certain job training, therapy, etc but not home use.

Now when small see-through HMDs are finally on the market we might see increase use. Those would actually have use. You could wear them without looking like a fucking goober, you can see through so you're not blind to the world or walking around with 1/2 second lag on everything. There are real-world applications such as non-distracting GPS directions, secondary displays, job training (better than VR since there's no lag, no looking through a small camera FOV)

Are you stupid? "NO LAG" "BETTER THAN VR"
Bitch, please...
>>
>>53442384
confirmed for not looking more than 2 seconds into current VR and definitely not even tried it.
>>
>>53443377
I meant no lag on the see-through portion. There would still be lag on whatever is displayed over.

>is VR a meme?

fixed that for you

>what is AR vs VR?
don't talk about things you have no understanding of
>>
>>53443479
Can you explain? A lot of VR right now use phones which have considerable lag on the camera. It works, but slowly. If feels "off" if you use it for AR because of the little bit of delay and you lose peripheral vision. I haven't tried any of the stuff that's about to be released.
>>
>>53443599
sorry for explaining it poorly. What I meant the upcoming VR headsets are too clunky to do much with. It's not going to catch on until we have smaller HMDs.
>>
Yes.

The effect is really cool at first, but the benefits of VR content don't outweigh the downsides.
>>
>>53443651
how are they too clunky? they're not meant to be worn walking around the streets, they're tethered to a PC for rendering power anyway so even if they were super minimalist it wouldn't really make a difference.
>>
It's a fad that will last until the human race goes extinct
>>
>>53443691
What downsides?
>>
>>53443711
>they're not meant to be worn walking around the streets, they're tethered to a PC for rendering power
that's exactly what's going to make them a fad. There isn't enough application for them to be used. People will get their fix of VR and be done with it like how 3d displays came and went. Something more wearable, the way google glass is, could be used outside of the home and have more adoption.
>>
It's a fag kept alive by desperate fags to get their "ultimate waifu experience", only for them to realize later on it can never replace the real experience
>>

>Something more wearable, the way google glass is, could be used outside of the home and have more adoption.

But that's not VR
>>
>>53441499
Nice.
>>
Only the poorest indigent people won't have VR in 10 years time.

Right now we are in the "VR Ready" era. In 5 years it will be as ubiquitous as TV. What with phones supporting it.
>>
>>53447735
It'll be up there with 3D TVs.
>>
Head-mounted displays (with positional/rotational tracking) are the next logical step forward from stationary computer monitors. "Augmented reality" will come afterwards, but unlike "VR", it's far from ready for consumer use.

VR is going to be a fad until AR becomes good enough (in at least 15-20 years), and then that'll be a fad until we finally figure out how to wire signals directly to our brains. We get there one step at a time.
>>
VR tech is old and simple as fuck, and was unpopular because it didn't have any applications beyond simulators.

It's still has no applications for general consumer but it was marketed well and current hardware made it more accessible.
>>
It is a dumb fad and will never achieve mass adoption unless prices go down to $99-$199

$699 & $899?

TOPPEST LELKEK

>THEY FELL FOR THE VR MEME
>>
>>53441065
If it is. It's a fad I've been waiting for since the NES.
>>
I saw a TiltBrush demo and it took someone 30 min to make something that looked worse than a 5 minute 2d drawing
>>
>>53441065
GearVR is a fad, but it is not and never will be even popular enough to be called that.

God knows how many years it'll take before we can get enough power not to have a wire running to a pc yet to have solid 120fps at 4k running off a phone.

Until then it'll stay alive and prosper enough for the input industry to find a standard model, also look at the sad state of pc gaming controller options developers have programmed for the last 20 years.
>>
VR won't be a huge hit until it's completely wireless, has good battery life and isn't fuck huge. Then you will see more normies using it.
