I'm putting a 3-disk home server together, and I need a recommendation on drives. I currently have a 2TB WD Black, so I need two more.

Looking for 2TB 7200RPM SATA disks. Also not looking to spend a fuckton on them. Any thoughts?

HGST NASDrive

Now leave dave alone.

The Deskstar NAS? Is there anything else that I won't have to wear earplugs around?

P.S. The WD Black is still in the box, so I'm not sure how loud it is. If it's nearly as loud as Hitachis, I guess I'm fucked.

Looks like my best bet is WD Red for price or HGST 7K3000 for MBTF.

Is there any way to muffle the sound of a Deskstar? The server is going to be a media server, so it'll probably be relatively close to my TV.

>3 disk
wut
explain.
If you're planning on something other than mirrored RAID, you're gonna have a bad time.

hope it helps, OP

Back before I had a plan, I built a microATX server with a 2TB drive. The case only has space for 3 disks. I now realize that the build is retarded, but I already own it, so that's what I'm working with.

Planning on shoehorning in a 2.5" OS drive and creating a Snapraid 3x2TB array.

Huge help, thanks dickbrain.

I read that. Like 3 times already. I also watched some videos on how fucking loud those Hitachi disks are. Backblaze is a cloud provider, so I'm sure they could give a fuck less about noise/price/anything. I'm just tryna play BDrips on my TV, ya feel me?

Probably also explains why you can get an Ultrastar for under 50 bucks.
>>
>>55644241
Ok, I have 16 of them and they are no louder than the noctua fans I have in the case, but hey, get what works for you.
>>
>>55644286

What size/model are the disks?

Also, what case holds 16 disks and why isn't it in my life?
>>
>>55644306
ATA device, with non-removable media
Model Number: Hitachi HUA723020ALA640

Its a Norco RPC-3116, would not recommend.
>>
>>55644306
If you want to know the antec nineteen hundred supports more than 16. It's an interesting case.

Well fuck my shit, that drive's going for $80 with a 5-year warranty. At that price, it would be worth buying a couple just to see how it works out. The current server is nearly silent, and it's going to be in a living room, so noise is a pretty big issue.

>>55644408

That's a pretty serious case. I wish I would've thought ahead before going full retard with my build. Goddammit.

I just deleted 2TB of pornography off of my hard drive. It feels great. I am 27 years old, and I have spent the last 17 years of my life as a slave to pornography.

In a decision which I am determined to not regret later, I elected to finally delete that directory off of my computer.

This was done in an effort to change my life. Lose enough weight so as not to look at my reflection in shame, do things with friends and family instead of work/sleep/repeat, keep up with hygiene, go see an eye doctor/dentist/physician, and just start pushing myself to be a better me. I really am disgusted with myself as I am...but now I'm finally willing to start doing something about it.

I don't want to do the whole nofap thing. I feel that putting those kind of rules on it will increase the likelihood of returning to bad habits. Cold turkey will be hard, but I think that my girlfriend will be understanding and very helpful in my lifestyle change.

Cool, but I really just wanted to know about hard drives.
>>
>>55644457
Yeah, these have been good drives for me so far, I got them for quite a bit cheaper from a tech recycling place, but they were all brand new and they gave me a discount for buying 20 of them at once. I would say its worth it in my experience.
>>
>>55644485
Just join me and you won't have to keep buying hard drives. It feels great.
>>
>>55644489

Thanks, player.

>>55644506

I don't think I have that much porn though. I really don't even have that many movies/TV shows ripped, but it can't hurt to have more space than you need, right?
