It's summer in some part of the world, also winter in another part where it's used to heat. Time for an air conditioning thread.
Chink brands and single speed fags need not apply.

In 2003, 70000 Europeans died because they did not understand the concept of air conditioning nor dehydration. Didn't even hit 40 degrees. A few years ago, some soldiers also died on a 27 degree day described as "scorching heat".

Mitsubishi master race checking in.

42K BTU heatpump, connects up to five indoor units.

Only have two though: a ductless wall unit for my basement "man cave" and a bigger air-handler that does forced-air heating/cooling for upstairs.
>>
>have ancient windows in an old house
>rotting and chipped wood, barely opens, glass threatening to fall out of the frame
>have to get one of those indoor AC units that runs a hose out the window
>duct tape every single crack or opening in the window frame i can find
>stuff bits of cloth everywhere for insulation
>still hotter than holy fuck with the AC on full blast
>AC is only able to cool the room about 5 degrees cooler than outside at any given time

Welp, it's fucking better than nothing.

I would give anything for one of those setups with a good window unit put right into a fucking wall and left there year-round.

The problem with portables is that because they're blowing air out the window, they're sucking hot air into the house too so they're only really good for spot cooling.

>tfw no qt azn to rescue from 28 degree hell because you're a faggot
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5jvhuZD8xg
On the other hand, Daikins are so sexy. 10/10 would stick a dick into suction inlet.
>>
>>55625776
The single-hose designs are terrible, because they remove air from the room that they're supposed to be cooling. Only part of the air that they suck in is cooled and pushed back into the room. The other part is heated and expelled through the hose. This creates a light vacuum in the room that they are supposed to be cooling, and hot air (from either outside or under the room's door) gets sucked into the room.

The dual-hose designs are better because they can recirculate the room air while cooling it, and recirculate outside air while heating it.

They are both terrible in that the compressor is in the room with you.

Mini-split > window unit > portable unit.

Always try to insulate first because it's cheap. Otherwise, depends on the area. 2.5kW for a bedroom sized, working your way up equivalent from there. Brand wise, all the Japanese ones are worth the same in weight except for Fujitsu which you get if you're cheap because it's still better than Korean which is better than Chinese. The Fujitsu R32 ones are ok I guess though if they're mounted properly otherwise the rotary compressor makes them rattle when the inverter ramps down speed.

Actually just got finished registering my new air conditioner's warranty. LG something or another. Cost me $180. Multi-speed. Auto temp sensing. Also has a magnetic remote so I can control it from across the room. Granted this thing is only 6,000 BTU, it kicks ass.

Living with my folks. Paying them $370 /month and my dad complains when I go an buy a air conditioner. "Why anon? We have central air! The rest of the house is 70 degrees!"

Walk into my room and it is literally 85F. "Oh...anon I see. This fucking sucks. OK lets get your thing in the window without fucking up the sills too much."

When the house was rebuilt, I tossed my father extra money to insulate my room with extra insulation meant for sound dampening. No noise in or out, but the insulation is so damned good, even just the heat from my PC gets trapped. WiFi doesn't get through properly so I had to buy a repeater.

>Pic related. Pretty much mine except mine has the controls on the left side.

My neighbor works HVAC and got me a good deal on a new-used unit (refurb) couple years ago, Frigidaire iQ Drive or some crap like that. R32 was only just approved in 2015 with Daikin pushing through with some EPA program to fast track it.

>>55627131
As I see it, the problem stems from market desires. The US, being where aircon was invented, has traditionally followed in the Carrier style using chillers for large buildings and likewise, unitary central aircon for residential (though even some houses have air cooled chillers). From this though, American systems typically lack the desired features and technology of Japanese systems (where ductless and VRF rule the market). The big one is inverter control which still isn't standard in murrica but standard in Japan since the 80s (you basically can't buy a non inverter Japanese split). Other features are mainly better filters, room sensors, powerful dehumidification and *humidification* and such, and of course high energy efficiency (COP/EER of 4-6 watt/watt. 8 for CO2 systems).
Wall of text aside, if the Japanese systems available don't have what you want, then sure why not. I know the Daikin selection is limited there, but Mitsubishi Heavy/Electric along with Fujitsus from the Canadian segment should still be good.
>>
>>55628975
Oh wait, you said used. In which case I wouldn't trust it. Japanese tend to treat as disposable but given the effort I'd just get a new one.

Yes. The reasoning is understandable though. Japan is energy starved so it needs all the savings available.
In terms of wibbly wobbly features, it's always been a thing to market splits like that. They like putting out an endless list of features like circulation regimes, louvre profiles, sensors (one of the Hitachis has 4[!] cameras on it), hot start, self clean, powerful, quiet, eco mode, blue fin, plasma ioniser and so forth. Of course, ducted air conditioners don't need a whole lot but US market systems (think style like >>55626791) have always been very simple in operation until the past few years, whereas the Japanese branded ones (which end up selling far more overseas because houses are disposable in Japan) still pack fancy operation modes and sensors.
But that's also where a bit line is drawn. The US loves its InternetofShit home automation integration whereas the Japanese units require manually hooking things up to do so, instead what usually happens is the remote contains all the features or you use the brand's own proprietary app.

I've lived in the Southwest U.S. and Shanghai, and I can say with certainty that air conditioning is a necessity for certain parts of the world in order to be a functioning, productive adult. Average summer temps in Shanghai of 90F/32C and 90% humidity is hell, as is the occasional oppressive heat you get in the Southwest such as last week where my city had an official high of 108F/42C (but I recorded temperatures of 111F/44C).
