Ive been noticing gsync monitors can go for a few hundred more than monitors with similar specs. Do you guys think GSync is worth the extra money on a monitor?

General monitor thread too

Freesync dude. Why to pay hundreds when a free alternative of same quality exists. Unless you love to be ass-raped by a company.

>>55621864
how will a rx 480 8gb perform on a 4k or 3440x1440 ultra wide with freesync? Will it be playable or look like shit?
>>
>>55621940
Im hoping to run a 1070 but I see what youre getting at
>>55621864
Thats a good point actually, so youre saying freesync works just as well for you?
>>
>>55621940

Obviously depends on the game, but a RX480 is not a 4K card. Not even a GTX 1080 can handle all games at max settings at 4K.

I would go with a 480 CF, a GTX 1070 or wait for Vega, depending on your country/prices and circumstances.

Personally and with my eyesight, I cannot distinguish 1440p vs 4K in a monitor size, I would care about fps, and buy a cheap Fury, but the 4GB HBM is a risky bet in the long term, maybe even middle term.
>>
>>55622029
True, Im pretty dead set on a 1070 because Im hoping on getting a Vive later so I guess Im still not sure what to invest in a monitor. I am hoping to run most of my older games in 1440p though so Im dtill considering a lot of monitor options.
>>
>>55622236
1070 can't run a vive properly as its display port can't power it and the hdmi doesn't have a high enough refresh rate.
>>
>>55622261
Oh shit thats good to know
>>

Is that a dildo or a bong? Or is it both?
>>

How good is freesync anyway along with gsync? I've been waiting for a monitor to come out with up to 144hz freesync, but I'm about to just say fuck it and get a 1440p/IPS/144hz monitor of neither brand and save some money.
>>
gsync is only useful it if your using a 1080 to push a 4k display, since you can't hit 4k@60 with a single 1080.

A gsync module supplied to the vendor is about $200, so obviously its not worth the money on anything other than a 27"+ 4k/5k or a 34" 3440x1440 ultrawide.

And at this pricepoint, we're talking about $800+ monitors for a "basic" IPS 60Hz monitor of whatever category of your choosing, and double for the asus 3440x1440 curved IPS @ 100Hz.

If you buy new cards every single refresh regardless, money isn't a factor in the first place.

gsync is only worth it for a very specific slice of the enthusiast market; if you upgrade every single cycle right now, and want to change that to every other cycle, because you'll "save" money by being able to skip a generation of video cards because gsync makes up the difference.

And if your sane person, and upgrade only during architectural shifts or some feature you want that your current card can't provide, you can save a fuckton more money by just lowering the settings.

nvidia is apparently going to push a new driver to fix that this week.
>>
>>55622611

Wait for the actual driver fix to appear though. There were rumours about hardware incompatibility that nobody answered in Nvidia forums.

Get a gsync monitor with ulmb my friend. I went from rank 60 on overwatch to 76 overnight because I upgraded my monitor.

Avoid freesync because it doesn't have ulmb.
>>
Definitely.

adaptive sync is not worth $100.

nice glass dildo

Since this is a monitor thread, I noticed that the 1070 doesn't have Nvidias surround capabilities. Why eould they allow 1060 but not the 1070 or 1080?
>>
Gsync doesn't shine unless you're playing at <60fps
If you have a computer that can play higher FPS, it's better to get a monitor that has higher refresh rate, better colors and/or faster response time. Gsync should be the lowest priority when it comes to buying a new monitor.
If your computer is shit and you can't play at higher than 60fps, then you could consider it, but I'd rather upgrade my computer.
>>
I have freesync and it can be pretty awesome. some games (like doom) that are already really smooth I don't notice it much in, but games like witcher 3 that can have serious frame drops/stutter, it makes a huge difference.

In the past, I would tolerate nothing less than 60 fps; even mid-50s drops would become noticable. with freesync though, I can tolerate all the way down to the mid 40s before things become janky. since that's an extra 10-15 fps of tolerance, its a big deal.

that being said, for 200 dollars more, you could get the next tier up in gpus, so maybe for nvidia its not worth as much. For AMD though, I'd definitely snag one.
>>
>>55623357
you're aware you can't use ULMB and gsync at the same time yes?
>>
>>55627171
There are lower cost gsync monitors without ulmb. What's so difficult to understand?
>>
My gsync monitor was $250. Total.
>muh hundreds
>>
>>55621682
Literally never a reason to buy it over a free-sync display
