Windows 10 Anniversary Update will bring a ton more features Linux users can only dream of. Upgrade already before it's too late to get your free copy.

http://www.howtogeek.com/248177/whats-new-in-windows-10s-anniversary-update/

FAQ:

- Isn't it a botnet???
- Nope. Telemetry means just collecting ANONYMOUS pieces of info (such as what graphic cards are in use today) that help them develop a better system. Even Firefox has telemetry today, and if you block it completely, programmers won't know that people still use your hardware/favorite features and remove them altogether.

- I'm a paranoid shitfuck/a dinosaur afraid of innovation. Can I turn Cortana off?
- Yes. It's a completely optional feature and you don't need to use it.

- Well, is there any other "problem" with it?
- No. It's as close as perfection as it gets. It's fast, safe and has a great UI.

I actually used windows 10 for a long while, and still use it on my laptop, but I had to go back to 7 for my desktop

I had some crazy issue where I couldn't run a single application or piece of software without manually right clicking and running as admin every single time, it had something to do with user accounts being tied to my microsoft account and even the person at MS said they couldn't help me outside of trying a fresh install, which I did to no avail

Hi there!

You seem to have made a bit of a mistake in your post. Luckily, the users of 4chan are always willing to help you clear this problem right up! You appear to have used a shitty Reddit meme when posting, but shitty Reddit memes are for Reddit, not for 4chan! Whoops! You should always remember to stop posting shitty Reddit memes when you're on 4chan, unless you're ironically mocking another user posting it unironically! Posting shitty Reddit memes you're on 4chan is poor form. You should always try to post quality replies, unless your shitty Reddit meme is absolutely vital to the post that you're making!

Now, there's no need to thank me - I'm just doing my bit to help you get used to the anonymous image-board culture!

Also, this whole "Anniversary Update" sounds extremely shit, according to OP linked article:

>Cortana Becomes a Whole Lot Smarter

(What With All That Starting Every Word With Capital Letters? Sounds Like Making Pause After Every Single Word).

Big deal, since Cortana is privacy nightmare and nobody sane use it. Not to mention that, for example, my language version dont have her anyway.

>Windows 10 Interacts with Your Android Phone (or Windows Phone)

Like I want total interaction, since I dont even use Windows Account.

>More Desktop Apps and Games Come to the Windows Store

Windows Store is shit and "Universal Windows Platform" shouldnt exist at all.

>Windows 10 Gets a Dark Theme (and More Theme Options)

Wooooow, even more dark themes. Also, if somebody wanted ricing, they did it already with various free software or paid ones (like Stardock Object Desktop).

>Microsoft Edge Finally Supports Browser Extensions
>Edge Gets Click-to-Play Flash, Pinned Tabs, Web Notifications, and Swipe Navigation

Who the fuck uses Edge?

>Windows Hello Brings Fingerprint Authentication to Apps and Websites
>Windows Hello Lets You Unlock Your PC With “Companion Devices”

Finally something useful, albeit only for small percent of users.

>Windows Ink Improves Digital Drawing and Annotation in Lots of Apps

Useless.

>Wi-Fi Sense’s Controversial Password-Sharing Feature is Gone

Everybody sane disabled it already.

>Windows Defender Can Provide Additional Protection If You Use Another Antivirus

For what purpose, if you already have third party Anti-vir?

>New PCs Will Include More Advertisements in the Start Menu

DISGUSTING. How is "more adds" even something positive?

>Cortana Gets More Useful Features

Again, Cortana is something that should be completely optional and not build-in.

>The Combined Skype Universal App is Back

Skype is only useful to talk to people, who refuse to use anything else for such communication.

>Windows Gets Its Own Linux Command Line

Something positive at least, I guess?

>The Start Menu Has Been Redesigned
>The “All Apps” option is now gone–you’ll just see a full list of installed applications at the left side of your Start menu.

Great move - turning tolerable Start menu into shit again. Does MS think that people loves to have clusterfuck in their Star menus and see ALL installed applications every time they open it?

>Tablet Mode is More Like Windows 8

Who likes Windows 8?

>The Taskbar Gets Calendar Integration and More

Little positive, but still no real deal.

>The Lock Screen is Improved, Too

Who uses lock screen for more than just loging in and, duh, locking your PC while you are away?

>Battery Options Become More Powerful

Might be useful for laptop owners, not for desktops at all. I thought that MS said they are going to focus on desktops more?

>Windows Update Is More Respectful of Your Time

I thought that everybody sane set it to "notify for download and notify for install" or at least "dont restart automatically"?

>The Action Center is More Convenient and Customizable
>Apps Can Now Take Over When You Visit a Website
>The Xbox One Becomes More Windows-Like
>Emojis Get an Overhaul

Like I said, completely pointless "update" that might bring one or two positive things, few shitty decisions and whole lot of pointless or missable crap.

The other computer can install updates but when I shut down the computer it blacks out and I have to hold down the power button.

literally from OP's article:

New PCs Will Include More Advertisements in the Start Menu
Windows 10’s Anniversary Update makes more room for advertisements in the Start menu on new installations. The amount of Microsoft app tiles pinned to the Start menu by default will be reduced from 17 to 12. The amount of “suggested apps” that appear here will increase from 5 to 10.

also:
>Emojis Get an Overhaul
OH BOY

>Windows Defender Can Provide Additional Protection If You Use Another Antivirus
>In the Anniversary Update, however, Windows Defender receives a new “Limited Periodic Scanning” feature. It can automatically turn itself on and scan your system occasionally, even if you have another antivirus program installed.

I use windows 10. I like it. This thread is such a massive shill though. The "anonymous" telemetry data gathers information about the files on your hard drive, the searches you do, the keys you press. Things which are very identifiable! If you're signed into a Microsoft account, all this data is tied to that account. Read the fucking licenses.
That being said, I am looking forward to the update. Just don't fool yourself into thinking that Microsoft care at all about privacy.

Since nobody else gave you a reasonable answer... using git and node for development (which I do at work on Windows) is a real pain when you have to use a shitty bash shell for git and paths work differently on windows (even with the posix stuff). I just prefer how bash works to cmd or powershell so it's nice to have 1st party support which even includes Linux running in user-space
>>
>>55615606

Right. Telemetry isn't inherently evil. But, if the data *IS* anonymous, they could show us what they're sending. Beyond that, Firefox is open source, so I can see whatever telemetry I want before it gets sent.

Also no, you can't turn off or remove Corina. "Turning [her] off", you'll still see the program running, and uninstalling doesn't work as it's just reinstalled.

Also, about the Linux features, they are severely half assed. I have to deal with Win10 in a development environment to help my microcuck boss, and more than 80% of the GNU/Linux implementations in WSL don't work.

Uninstall the app–or unpin the tile if it’s not downloaded yet–and that advertisement will be gone forever. But, as easy as these advertisements are to remove, new PCs will have a more cluttered Start menu with more ads. Neowin noticed this information in a presentation directed at device manufacturers.

>after going "pay to install"
>>
>>55626447
But pajeet told me that there are no ads in the start menu?
>>
>>55626447

Bundled/preinstalled bloatware is probably fine from an ethical standpoint, as long as they don't add any AFTER you install the OS, and you have the option of removing them. So far Windows 10 hasn't crossed any lines, but it's probably only a matter of time.

1. It doesn't touch any of your private files. Games should work fine. You may need to reinstall some. Rolling back is still unreliable. Take a full image-backup of your system before upgrade.

2. Unknown. We don't know what kind of data it actually collects and sends. We have only their own word they don't and they've been pushing that telemetry shit way too hard. There has to be ulterior motives at play.

Then again, they can't legally do anything with the private information.

Windows defender turning on automatically is an opt in feature. If you don't turn the feature on, windows defender won't periodically check for viruses. The whole point is that Microsoft sometimes gets virus definitions before everyone else so if a really nasty worm spreads all over the internet, defender can turn itself on and scan for it and quarantine it hours-to-days before other AV software has it in their definitions.

As for the Linux command line, that's extremely convenient for people forced to develop on Windows for their career but could benefit from shell scripting or they want to install some command line tools so they can make their software cross platform more easily without needing to dual boot.

Microsoft is catering to normies and people with jobs, you know .. The majority of their market share? When you need to reboot to Linux to do something, that's less time you're spending using their product. Of course they're going to find a way to keep you using Windows. The less you reboot to Linux, the less you'll feel like you need it until eventually you're running Windows exclusively.
