Just use TechPowerUp's benchmarks from their reviews. They test lots of games and have handy performance summary tables at the end. I've always found them to be neutral and have no bias towards one side or the other.

Typically nVidia costs more but you get better performance, AMD is cheaper but has less performance, but is usually better value (more fps/$)
If you want a cooler, faster card and have a large budget, go for a higher tier nVidia card, if you want decent performance at a lower cost, go with AMD. Don't waste your money on the lower end nVidia cards because that's where AMD beats them in both price and performance.

Okay, here's how it works. You buy graphics card from brand A. If it disappoints you, buy your next one from brand B. Rinse and repeat. They both have their shitty issues and the benchmark numbers are almost pointless unless one vendor or another is selling significantly stronger cards for cheaper.
Which currently isn't the case from my experience, but that can vary from country to country.
