How many of you are still running 1st or 2nd generation Core i5 CPUs?

I've got an i5 2500k and I struggle to see any reason to upgrade. Could someone enlighten me as to what the newer processors can do that makes my 5 year old i5 2500k obsolete?

The Q6600 was quite a good CPU. Paired with a GTX 295x2 it was unstoppable in its day.

Picky as fuck with ram.

Boots slow as fuck, especially with 32gb+ of ram.

Worse than the i7-6700k in single and quadcore performance. Basically only good if you're doing server loads or running 4 GPUs.

i5 750 here. I don't really see a huge reason to upgrade, but I am replacing my hard drives - all of them and I need more memory because 8GB isn't cutting it for my needs so I'm actually going to upgrade everything including the processor - old mobo doesn't even support SATA3.

The processor is still good enough even today, but I found it severely lacking in encoding speed and the time it took to 7zip data.
>>
>>55595279
I use an HD 5750 and a Q6600. For being 9 years old this CPU is awesome. Best $25 I've ever spent.

I have an i5-3570k. Was rendering a 4K .png version of my model with ray tracing in Autodesk Inventor and I wished I had an i7. Only time I've really felt the need to have something better.
>>
>>55595755
I'm not even sure if you can call it an upgrade.

Was using a board from 2011 and I was rendering alot of stuff in x264. Went downstairs to make a sandwich while stuff rendered. Came back to the smell of burning silicon near my computer. I took the side panel off and one of the mosfets blew up in front of me.

CPU was fine and I sold it to pay for a new board and the pentium.

Honestly it was way worth it because I had sata 3 and usb 3

i7-920 @ 3.94 GHz here.

Only upgrade I'd consider would be a Xeon X5660 and hope for a 4.2 GHz+ OC.

I'll consider upgrading once you can OC Xeon CPUs again on the enthusiast chipset so I can get the same kind of longevity as I did out of my X58 platform. Haven't seen anything past broadwell-E though so looks like I'm sticking with the i7-920 for a while longer.

You've already lost a year of 'value' on the 6600k. So if you want 'maximum' value you'll wait for the 7600k. By buying it right away you'll get the most out of it. DDR4's getting cheaper, so it makes sense to buy 1x16gb so that you can go 32 and 64 eventually.

The 6600k will be fine though and last forever. So you really won't be missing that much.

The i3 will edge by your chip in multicore. And crush it in single(double).

Literally no-one is saying that. When 6700k was released and it was being sold at above MSRP, the 5820k, including the cost of a MOBO, was only a little more expensive, so there was hardly any reason to get the 6700k.

>The 5820K gets rekt in gaymes by the 6700K anyway
kek, how is 10-15% better single core performance "rekt"? 10-15% single core performance will only matter in a handful of games, and 99% of the time the reason you can't get 144fps ISN'T your CPU, it's your GPU anyway.

I can count on 1 hand the number of games that I play that are CPU bottlenecked.

And further with DX12 and Vulcan, 6 core+ CPUs are being more and more used, making that 6700k fall further and further behind.

Basically if you think you'll get a significantly better gaming experience on a 6700k vs a 5820k you're delusional.

something was wrong with your setup then

I bought a 6600K because I've never owned a core CPU yet, If I had a Nehalem or Sandy Bridge I'd still be using it like everyone else I know.
>>

Yep, held onto old tech for too long
>>
>>55595279
I got a Core i7.
>>
>>55599196
I have an A10-7870K.

It's ok for games by itself (low settings 1080) I picked up an R9 Nano for cheap. Never had any issues with framerates.

Same here, old dell xps L502x sandy bridge core i7 26xx QM from 2011ish With an SSD and 8GB its still decent.

Couple of driver issues (bad support for Windows 10/gt540m) but aside from that (and weight!) it's great.

Have any of you guys repasted your CPU for better performance on older i3/5/7 chips?

i7 2600k @ 4.7ghz reporting in, using this sucker until it dies or intel/amd make huge performance gains

I have a i5 4690k, bought it for $80 over a year ago, runs fucking great.
>>
Q9550 here upgrading to 6600k soon
>>
I don't play too many games since I'm on Linux but my 2600k/7970 combo from over 4 years ago is still great.
>>
>>55595279

i-What?!? I still run a E8500 @ 3.4 GHz with stock cooler. Not planning to upgrade as well. LGA775 is sooo comfy
>>
>>55600466
what RAM setup is that?
>>
>>55595279
Got a i5 4460, paired with my r7 360 im able to play many games on medium settings
>>
still comfy on my 2500K running stock.

don't even know why I bought a K-series chip.
>>
Still running Thinkpad W520 on i7-2720QM. After using throttlestop still better than 3, or 4-gen
>>
>>55604730

Just 4 2gig sticks, I honestly don't much about memory configurations, but the first 3 sticks should still be running in triple channel even if there isn't anything else populating the last 2 slots right?

Plus the 6700 is way more power efficient so your losing money in the long run
>>

Core i5-2520M here. Everything I do works nice and fluent; no need to upgrade. We don't live in the 90s.

>z170 is likely the better option for most as intel confirmed its supporting it for the next 4 years

GL with that.

Jewtel has like never had a socket for 4 years
>>
>>55605660
hmm yup. i saw a news article about a z270 board for the upcoming kaby lake. however, there might still be a possibility that the z170 supports kabylake with some kind of bios update.
>>
>>55595279

Was on 2600k just got a 6700k. Sandy bridge is starting to show it's age on cpu games at 1440p and productivity apps.

Hi, me.
>>
How do you tell what generation you have?

I've been using an i5 750 forever, the CPU is never the bottleneck.
>>
>>55595279
I still run an AMD 1090t X6 perfectly fine. Runs every and any game. If it still fits your needs, I wouldn't upgrade. Probably not worth it. It isn't to me.
>>
>>55606679
had mine at 3.6ghz on a stock cooler. bottlenecks dying light and gta 5 with an r9 290x. Upgraded to a skylake i5 (4.4ghz) and cpu usage in gta 5 went from 100% to ~40%ish.
