There's three Macbooks:

Plain: worse than celeron piece of shit with the worst keyboard in the history of computing

Air: same 1366x768 TN piece of shit you find on $200 craptops, and it's glossy on top of that

Pro: if you try to use the high end hardware they cram into it, it catches fire

They're all utter shit, and only a moron would buy any of them.

>>
>>55582278
I've been considering picking one of these up, but the price is honestly ridiculous.

How do feel about the screen size and keyboard travel, those are the two things I'm not sure if I'd like. I think a 13 or 14 inch screen would suit me better than the 12 one that it comes with and the very short key travel may stop it from being my daily carry device. I was considering one of the ASUS Zenbook UX305 ultra portables with Linux instead, seems like it would give me what I'm looking for without the weird tradeoffs.
>>
>>55584197
>ASUS Zenbook UX305
I use that right now, and I strongly recommend it. not sure if it'd work with Linux though
>>
>>55584197
I agree with the price being too high, however I was willing to pay the premium for the build quality, screen, native OSX and trackpad. The battery life on these is also top shelf.

I don't have a problem with the travel but many do so my opinion might be an outlier.
>>
>>55584197
In regards to the screen size it actually feels a little too small. This is my first notebook though so I'm gonna see how it goes. There's a 30 day return policy so if I dislike the screen size that much I'll return it.

Yeah, if I could get somewhere between the two specs for like $900-1000, I'd jump on it. M5 processor and 256GB SSD would be perfect.
>>
>>55584197

Just get an Apple efurbished one from a year or two back. Saves you a few hundred dollars and the hardware is very similar. In 2015 I bought a Late 2013 13" Macbook Pro / Retina. Hardware was damn near the same and worked like a brand new machine for around $400 cheaper than a new one.

seriously if you really want to use OSX, just go for a hackintosh. go to http://www.tonymacx86.com/ and look for a laptop that'll suit your needs. i'm using one right now and it's never crashed (HP ProBook 4530s, been running El Capitan for around 3 years)

I just found myself constantly looking for other options because of the high MacBook price and would always end up thinking I wouldn't be satisfied because of either the screen or trackpad or something else like non-fanless design (I really wanted fanless) so in the end I just jumped onto it.
>>
>>55584360

Another thing you should keep in mine is resell value. Macbooks keep their value far longer than any other laptop hence why you see people selling 3 year old Macbook Pros for $1k.

The reason I mention this is due to the the fact that it makes upgrading a cinch in the future. Buy a macbook for like $1300. Resell it 2-3 years later for $1000, get a good upgrade for essentially $200-300. People always overlook this property.

Because if you're going to be selling them in the short term then of course higher resell value is better. Use your head kid.

I love the size and weight of the macbook, but boy, the keyboard is awful and performance is not great for the money.

But who knows, it might be viable after 2 or 3 more generations of core-m processors and maybe something like adding haptic feedback to the keyboard to give the illusion of key depth.

This. Even Apple knows you can only do real work from Windows, like manufacturing Macs.
>>
>>55584844

Still using a 2013 rMBP and I have never once regretted buying it considering the circumstances.

It was a snap decision. I was planning on getting a Surface Pro 3 to use for school, work, and general use when I randomly checked the price of a refurb MBP and realized it was about the same and decided to pick it up.

At the time I was actually one of the people who was vehemently anti-apple due to their prices to specification ration. While I'm not gonna deny that their shit is overpriced if you look at nothing but the specs of the hardware but honestly the build quality and software makes it worth it. A ton of dev tools at your disposal and some very handy apps. Plus I find myself loving OS X.

That's not mentioning that at the time I was ignorant to the fact that OS X had a fully functional bash shell. I was aware that it was UNIX-like but the fact that I have access to a large majority of the power of and applications of a Linux machine is just the icing on the cake for me.

For a company big as apple, its really strange how they manage to 'neglect' products.

They must have a design/engineering team working on pretty much everything and figuring out incremental updates, it would be pretty fucking insane if there was only one team, working on one product at a time under Ive's personal scrutiny.

So providing incremental updates for products that don't need a design overall should be a no brainer... but hey, i'm just a nerd who likes recent hardware, obviously i'm jot a jobsian genius.

Ex Apple engineer here. I worked on iOS devices but we didn't use OS X for anything but coding. There were certain programs we used for 3D modeling that only ran on Windows. The guys responsible for finding vulnerabilities used Linux and FreeBDS on HP and Thinkpad laptops. Overall OS X is similar enough to iOS to be useless for any real work you might have to do other than normie shit like spreadsheets, email, light web browsing, etc. Apple products aren't that bad for normies. They really do just work (as long as what you're trying to use is officially supported by Apple). You can easily install Windows on a Mac using bootcamp assistant if you were dumb enough to buy one.
