Apparently a fair number of OpenBSD devs use thinkpads. Never had a problem running it on mine. If you're buying the latest shiniest thinkpad early after release you should probably should track -current.

Also, I simply prefer using BSD. I also try to have a linux system for testing (the distro has varied a bit over the years). But I spent many years working on real BSD and System V Unix systems, and BSD feels much more Unix-like than Linux. Linux has been feeling increasingly less Unix-like as the years have passed, since long before systemd was even a pimple on Poettering's ass.

I've never had trouble running OpenBSD on any slightly older hardware. I know, you've heard the meme about no drivers, but that's only on the newest (mostly GPU and wireless adapters) hardware. OpenBSD is slow to support the newest, but once it is supported, that hardware will always work. Ten years from now, your current hardware will probably not run the latest version of Windows, but if it does, it will be very painful to use. It may or may not run the latest version of Linux distro X, and if it does, it will not be without a shitload of problems. OpenBSD will run well on it, because OpenBSD doesn't deliberately break shit, let alone leave it broken.
I can't really say with FreeBSD because I haven't used it as much, however they do take great pains to ensure Linux binary comparability, so in principle anything that works with the latest version of Fedora, should be able to work with FreeBSD. It just may take a bit of work.
