For my first proper build, should I use an AMD CPU, or an Intel CPU? Which does /g/ recommend? I won't be doing anything too CPU intensive, but Gentoo will be used on the machine, so the compile times will have to be taken into account...

What kind of retarded question is that?

Entirely depens. If you are a poorfag and only want to invest very little monry, there are probably some AMD CPUs which are worth it. If you have a little more money to spend an Intel CPU will most probably be better,,,

If you're actually serious, the 8320 is a good choice for constant compiling, especially with Linux.

Ignoring the fact that everything that beats it costs considerably more and requires a drastically more expensive motherboard I see. Cool.

A used 2500k is faster (keep in mind thats a 8350 in the diagram) and costs much less. A new sandybridge i3 is probably even faster, seeing an old 4330 has almost the same performance.

If someone is willing to go used then why go for an i5 and not a xeon or an opteron? Sixteen or even 32 cores is much better.
>i3
Weren't we talking about compiling? You know the thing that only gets a ~25% boost from hyperthreading, meaning an i3 is only as good as three cores from an i5.
>8350
Is dirt cheap right now if you're squeamish about getting used things. The difference between that and an 8320 is minimal and the multiplier is unlocked across the entire FX range.

What the fuck does that mean?

Don't fall for the memes, you stupid fuck.
