The current generation of Thinkpads isn't that impressive. They're moving away from metal builds and falling for the touchscreen and thinness memes.

That's simply not true, at best you could argue that it has a higher screen resolution, which brings more downsides than positives, specially on Windows or Linux. Also it's 16:9.
Other than that, they are very similar, XPS got a newer CPU until Macbook refresh is released but given that rMBP got a 28W instead of a 15W CPU, i7 from XPS is pretty much identical with i5 from rMBP. As is the rest like SSD size and speed.

As much as I like the idea of carbon fiber for flexibility, weight, and strength, they never should've used it on any external surface.
Currently using a macbook air 13" 2013, it's about 3 years old now, works fine mostly but i would like to get a new one within the next 6 months.
13" is pretty much my ideal size, right now i'm considering waiting and seeing what the upgraded pros are like, going for an XPS 13, or something more exotic like a Surface 4(5?) or book.
Given that it's nearly Q3, i probably might as well wait for Kaby Lake, right?

From the non Apple stuff Surface 4 is the only remotely interesting IMO, still has a pretty mediocre battery life and the more powerful ones need a fan while the m3 one got crippled RAM or SSD size; SP5 should be very interesting. And if it turns out to be shit, at least SP4 price will go down by the time.
