Daily reminder that while you are here shitpiosting about Phone wars and OS wars, your precious media is decaying and theres nothing you can do about it.
I have experienced more dying hard drives and flash memory than decaying discs.

>those edgy track names
and nothing of value was lost
>>55562366
Good for me that I take backups then.
Who the fuck still uses physical media anyway?
We're all decaying day after day. Act accordingly.
>>55562366
Yes, but it's also getting re-written, so there's no real "decay".
:^)

This
mid '90s PC games don't rot and you can download them all from the internet anyway.
optical disks are a dead-end. as cool as they are, we have developed far superior solid-state storage.
>>55562725
>mid '90s PC games don't rot
ugh, I say that and now Disk 2 of MS Space Simulator has a read error. At least I can rewrite it.
fuck physical media, seriously.
>>55562725
Actually, it depends on how they were created and with what materials.
Pressed disks tend to last, while home burned shit from the 90's didnt.

>the year is two thousand, one hundred, and sixteen
>OP is still manually shitposting and obivously does manual backups
>Something...Isnt...R/write
Is the part with the hard driver true /g/?
I'll have to power on all those old suckers again

A few 5.25" floppies I have are fucked, those are starting to get pretty old.
Any discs should be good for a very very long time yet.
>>55562776
Yeah, I've heard that certain pressed disks from certain factories have shit sealing and eventually corrode, but they were mostly produced in the late '80s, afaik.
They're still very fragile storage media in comparison to newer technology. An SD card can survive being kept in a pocket, run through a washer and puts up with the kinds of physical abuse that would render a CD useless.
They're great for music or continually streaming data (like for a game console), but general data access times on a PC are crap and the only reason they were used at all is their great ratio of price:storage at the time. The "big" magnetic removable disks (SD120/ZIP/etc) were really expensive or had shit compatibility.
>worrying about losing my data within the next billion years
kek
I have never lost a disk to rot.
Its really only a problem with media made without quality control.
Its almost exactly like flash memory.
You buy QuanDongDing SuPer Media Lucky Fun? That shit is going to last a week.
You buy something reputable? It will last close to the expected lifespan (15-30 years depending on the product).
>>55562366
Years ago I worked at IBM.
They had a forum on the IBMPC network entitled ENTROPY. There engineers (and mere mortals) discussed the problem of data permanence.
Apparently, there is no solution, apart from engraving in stone. Even repositories like those built by the US government are nor immune.
>>55562366
daily reminder that there's a government owned copy of your data somewhere anyway.
>>55562366
The only thing decaying here is your fucking brain cells.
The only thing you can do about it is by killing your self
>>55565187
Also i bet you are the one kid who corrects niggers so i will do it for you
>>55565187
Decaying here are*
>>55562759
>fuck physical media, seriously.
Implying all media is not physical.
>>55562795
That songs great.

Oh shit, i'm interested too
I hope he is just shilling so we get into cloud storage
>>55562366
>he can't use cloud storage because he's a degenerate
>all his media is either illegal, stolen, or both
it's time to grow up anon
>>55562366
I've been paranoid about this. Will my DVDs and backup disks die in my lifetime? Assuming i don't kill myself first.
My 20 year old CDs still work. How long will they take to decay?
>>55565525
NSA please go and stay go
Keep masturbating to that CP you got, you faggot
>>55565350
>implying his media isn't floating on radio waves that are being hot-potatatoed by two transceivers
Spotted the cuck

As soon as these become even slightly commercially viable i'm going to grab a ton and start up my own archive center that scrapes the internet for research papers, historical video footage and books for educational/historical usage.
(and of course, my own private archive for my animu)
Screenshot this.

You are a very stupid person.

Forgot that i'm not him by the way
>>55562366
The CD-Rs I burned 20 years ago still work fine.
>>55562366
Pretty much every single fucking thing is decaying right now. And you can't stop it
>>55562366
>implying I don't keep multiple copies of backups
