I'm seriously contemplating changing out the AIO for a air cooler again. For multiple reasons, but the two key ones being the the X61 fans are loud, plus I hate CAM, and also it seems like this generation of graphics cards are fucking huge and will interfere with the radiator since these two reference are already all up in it's grill.
Despite how much I love it, I'm starting to regret the S340. There's no clearance for a high-end heatsink. I'm considering now the top-down spiritual successor to my old C12P, the NH-C14S.

Yeah, the NCase is pretty kick ass. But, I won't be able to get the overclock I want and have an NVMe drive run within operating temperatures. Plus my 980 isn't as powerful alone as I'd like, so I may pick up a second in the new build. If I find one cheap enough.

The thing I don't want to bother with those cables since I don't plan on keeping them. The case doesn't have any "cable management" in mind since it's a Powermac G5 case with a custom motherboard in mind. Hence I have to actually think hard as to what to do with them

Can't you just turn the fan speed down? I have my H115i running at about 900rpm most of the time, fan profile tops out at 1200rpm. I only hear it at about 1500+.

They were OK, but really left a lot to be desired. Anything above 50% was audible, but I feel it was less of an annoyance compared to NZXT fans. Overall though, I wouldn't personally recommend them if you have a filter in front of them. For unobstructed airflow they're good though.

Yes I can. But I just really hate the CAM software. Without the CAM software the pump stays in "silent" mode which is like 800-something RPM.

I can and it keeps the fluid temperature around ~35c. The problem is it totally kills any airflow in the case. Anything below 65% and there's no airflow to the touch coming out of the radiator.
I considered doubling it up and making it push-pull, but I would need to remove the cable management bar to make it fit, plus it would even more limit my future GPU upgrades.
I'm not complaining about the X61 performance cooling-wise. It's the best cooler I've used. My 4790K is OC'd to 4.6 @1.3v and even under load it never goes above ~45c.
Either way even if I change back to a down draft cooler I won't waste the X61. I'll just throw it in my mother's computer as she's been wanting a new system built.
What I /really/ wanted was to go full custom loop with the Swiftech H240, but it just got such horrible reviews for failures I'm going back to air.

Do you have room to mount it at the top? I was considering front mounting my H115i but I would have the same issue not enough intake air unless I crank the fans up. But with my current setup it pulls warm GPU air through when gaming. My liquid temp is normally about 27-30C but hits about 35C when gaming. Eventually I am gonna get a reference card though.

Thinking of doing a legit watercooling project soon.
They don't make blocks for the 780 anymore but I already have it oc'd as far as I can without a custom bios and it never reaches >65c on benchmarks, and in games it rarely reaches >45c
The main problem is my CPU, it's cool under load but I didn't use my computer for ~10 months, and now when I run benchmarks it gets into the upper 80's usually even with the fans on high. I'm not sure what happened with the h100i but I'm assuming sitting for 10 months had something to do with it. So effectively I can't overclock it.
Planning on keeping the 4770k for a long time and just oc'ing so doing a custom loop will probably be my next step rather than buying another shitty AIO. And when I upgrade the GPU eventually I can just add it to the loop.

Yep, it will run at 2133mhz at first unless you enable the XMP profile in the UEFI, then it will run at 3200mhz.
Intel regards anything above 2133mhz as overclocking though, so there will be more load on the memory controller (more heat). Looking at forums over the last year, almost all 6700Ks seem to be able to handle 3000mhz and maybe 95% are fine with 3400mhz.
Generally speaking two dimms seem to have a higher success rate than 4 from what I've seen, but I'm not smart enough to know why...

Not on my motherboard, but there are some boards with 5 slots, theoretically you could find one that has pcie x16 in 2 slots pcie x8 in 2 slots and pcie x1 in the final slot

Yes. The ASRock X99e-ITX/ac.
It's actually a very good board, and if you do some research into the Narrow ILM CPU socket, you'll find a lot of cooling options too. Some quality stuff from Noctua is available, as well as most AIO's if you buy the Asetek Narrow ILM retention ring.

The Fractal Design Define Nano S is an excellent, relatively small case for watercooling. Can support two 240mm and it's smaller than the Evolv ITX and Manta by quite a bit.

Anybody in here have experience gaming on one of Xeon CPU's that are basically just i7's without integrated graphics and with ECC support?
I was thinking about building my new machine on the C236 chipset with a Xeon E3 1230 v5, which seems to be an i7 6700 (non-K, obviously) with some ECC memory. The build price comes out to only $20-30 more than an i7 build with similar specs and I tend to spend more time in virtual machines than I do gaming anyways, but when I want to play a game, I'd like it to work.
Any thoughts or experience?

Get an AiO cooler for the cpu and mount it on the front of that haf xb. Standard 240mm radiator with the fans pulling air out of the front. This way the heat from the cpu isn't being fed through the fury X rad.

It's not worth it. An i7 would be much better at playing games and supports VMs while a Xeon would be just as good at VMs while being less efficient for gaems.

Works fine. My buddy does a lot of non gaming work so I gave him a Xeon e3-1231v3. (4770k with no igpu). Plays everything fine paired with a 390X. Granted not as high a frame rate as an overclocked i5 or i7 of course. But that's to be expected.
Not to mention you can use lower profile coolers etc because you're not overclocking anyway so who cares.

Although when I built the build with the Xeon for a buddy, the cpu was $90 cheaper than its i7 counterpart. I prefer the i7 personally because the iGPU is helpful if dedicated breaks or is fucked up. Where as with the Xeon, youre fucked.

Looks like OC3D did an article on that Xeon and they said the memory limitation, since C236 only supports 2133 memory, holds it back quite a bit compared to even an i5 machine with 3200 DDR4, which an i7 6700 with 3200 DDR4 was what I was comparing prices against, so I guess Xeon be dammed.
Anyone have that pic of the beast Dual Xeon build that has all 16 ram slots filled as well as 3 1080s?

What's your overclocked scores?
My i5 is at 4.7GHz and my 1070 boosts up to 2088MHz, I'm sure you'd smash my score if OCd.
Is it okay to position CPU cooler like this? It wouldn't fit sideways because of the ram modules, my temps are fine though.

Depends if your processor is square or rectangular under the cover and if base of your cooler is flat or bowed.
If you have a bowed base and a rectangular chip then it matters.

There are only a few non enterprise situations where a xeon is better than an i7.
Where you want 4cores plus hyperthreading and are indifferent to clock speed. (xeon is slightly cheaper)
Where you want more cores (up to 18 / 36 hyperthreaded ) or L3 cache (up to 45MB). Even if you don't want more than the i7 maximums (10/20 and 25MB) the Xeon can be cheaper when you go beyond 4/8 and 8MB.
