16:10 is alright as long as it's 1680x1050. I had a 16:10 monitor for a long time before switching to a 16:9, but only for the 144hz, if I could have gotten a good 16:10 144hz I would have, although the slight extra space that 16:9 provides is nice.

It's better than 16:9, but it was phased out by it as the standard very quickly. So paying stupid prices for 16:10 isn't a good idea, in that sense it's a meme.
I have a 1920x1200 monitor, it's better than 1920x1080 in every way, even for 16:9 video since you can have your subtitles on a black bar under the video and not on it.
And it has native 1600x1200 which is great for old software and games.
