I don't like and never liked tablets (although I have one). But i do like the 2 in 1 laptops like the 360 bendable lenovo yoga or the detachable screen on surface pro.

Netbooks were promoted as mini laptops, lesser powered because it's for lightweight uses. But people bought them to use as full powered laptops. Tablets (iPads) were never promoted as replacements for laptops but as complements to other tech, another device to do things with.
If tablets are getting any kind of push as a laptop substitute, it's because the interface and architecture is maturing and they're able to encroach on areas formerly dominated by laptops.
Netbooks and tablets entered the market from different directions.

My Surface 3 (non-pro) makes an awesome modern netbook that I can draw porn on. Able to play Wildstar Online on it as well, very low settings though at around 40FPS.

I use my iPad literally everyday in grad school and hardly ever for games or other time wasting shit. Laptops are pretty inconvenient for keeping textbooks on and with all my textbooks on my tablet I can get in my required reading literally everywhere.
Plus you can't use a laptop at the gym. Two mundane activities, that you should be doing, feed into each other. I don't want to get off the elliptical until I've atleast finished the chapter, and I don't want to stop reading until I've hit my daily time on the elliptical.

Battery life isn't viable for a shitty device. Doesn't matter if you have a 16 core, 5ghz processor and 100gb of ram or whatever bullshit when your phone can't spend more than 2 hours a day doing those things it needs the specs for.
Phones as phones have been shitty for years. Smart Phones aren't any better than the old Nokias in terms of connectivity and quality and the only benefits over them are the fact it's a multimedia device that does every job in one handset as opposed to a dozen better devices.
If you can afford the weight, you are better served getting that laptop, the satnav, the MP4 player, the better quality phone etc but for every day use, smart phones are better if you just want a pocket buddy.
IPads are the superior way to casually browse the internet. Have fun clicking around on a screen if you think you know better.
