Fractal R5 windowless.jpg
32 KB, 800x600
I'm quite new to /g/ because I've only started coming since I was building my new PC from the ground up, and I was looking for advice. I already ordered most of my parts (gtx 1080, i7 6700k, Z170 pro etc) but I still haven't decided on a case.

I've heard that the R4 and R5 are the only acceptible ones, but is that just a meme? I had my eye on the CM HAF X but that's like 6 years old.

Does anyone have any recommendations? My budget is £150 ($200) and I'm looking for a full tower I think. Thanks
>>

Fractal Define R5
Corsiar 750d or 450d
Phanteks Enthoo Pro
Fractal Design Node 804
NZXT H440
Corsair Carbide Air 540
>>
£150 buys you most high-end mid size cases and quite a few nice non-watercooling optimised full towers, quit being a faggot and pick out a case you think looks good that has the features you want (i.e., cooling, noise performance, ease of cable management, separate ssd mounting areas, etc)
>>
>>55545317
All I can say is I have the R4 and it's pretty cozy. Only thing I want is a way to turn off the power led at night.
>>
>>55545443
Well that's the thing, I don't really know what I like, which is why I wanted other people's opinion. You guys know more than me. I want someone to tell me "This is the best and here's why" I don't care if it's objective or not

>>55545435
Looking at them now, thanks

>>55545449
R4 and R5 are basically the same right? I would be getting the R5 if I were to go fractal, but is there anything that makes the R4 better?
>>
>>55545709
The R5 is the improvement version of R4, no reason to go R4 other than its less expensive
>>
>>55545317
lol just buy a $11 case, don't fall for the meme

I got one for my RX 480-dedicated build, and it just werks. I don't look at my case like an autist, I just tuck it under my desk

Why not suspend your hardware from the ceiling?

I have that exact built in a Define S. My HDD is the loudest part.
>>
>>55545721
Yeah that's not a problem for me, thanks man

>>55545739
I mean yeah but I won't be watercooling so I want a case with great ventilation and low sound. The R5 appeals to me because it looks so simple and not "Gaymur LED's" but what if those cases had a tangible advantage. That's what I wanna know. Will an $11 be as good?

>>55545753
Kek
>>
I am using a Fractal Design Define S. If you don't need a optical drive or a ton of hard drives it is superior to the R5.
>>
>>55545803
Shit that looks nice. Is that a noctua dh-15 cpu cooler? Cause that's the one I ordered, does it work well?

How loud does it get?

>>55545824
Does it provide just as good cooling? How many drives does it support because Ill have like 3 SATA's used (one SSD and two HDD) but I mean I'd like the freedom to add more,
>>
>>55545849
You get better cooling since there is nothing blocking the airflow. There are mounts for 3 HDD's and 2 SSD's.
>>
>>55545317
I have a personal love affair with Antec. You can get clean cases without the stupid plexiglass windows that make you look like a PC gaming faggot.

>>55545449
Also, I am completely sick of people using the term "cozy". Drives me nuts. It makes you sound like a complete moron.
>>
>>55545849
I'm pretty sure the cooling is very close to the same, but if I had to say, the define S should have better cooling due to it being smaller therefore airflow inside the case is moved at a faster rate, though the improvement in cooling would be very little.

>>55545895
Antec guy again.

This is what I have airflow is kinda garbage once I am less poor I will resolve that. However the case to me has just the right amount of embellishment.
>>
>>55545895
Yeah I don''t really care if it has window's or not. Specific case?

>>55545886
>>55545896
That's probably all the spaces I need for drives so I'll look into it. Does the S support ATX+ motherboards? and what are the front drives like?

Oh also How big is it in relation to the R5?
>>
R5 here. Non-windowed. Got it for a great price last November. Really easy to work in and pretty quiet. I do have a little hard drive rattle but I blame that on one ancient HDD I've had storing some of my stuff for almost 10 years.

My setup is pretty basic but it's nice to know that it's big enough to accommodate water cooling and huge GPUs if I ever decide to go that way for some reason. I'm also the kind of person that still likes to have an optical drive, so that's why I chose it over the NZXT H440.
>>
>>55545317
Best case to get?
How about these doubles.
>>
>>55545966
The Fractal Design S only supports ATX, Micro ATX and Mini ITX
>>
>>55545966
Also the r5 is (WxHxD): 232 x 451 x 521mm
the fractal S is (WxHxD): 233 x 451 x 520mm, Literally means no improvement in cooling, I was wrong about the improvement in airflow
>>
>>55545966
>ATX+
You mean E-ATX? Don't think so. Built for ATX and lower. It is pretty much the exact same size as a R4 or R5.
>>
>>55546033
You will get better airflow since there are no hard drive cages or optical bays in the front. More options and space for radiators and fans.
>>
>>55546033
This only applies if you remove the R5 cages btw, also since the Define S is able to take in an additional 120mm fan in the front, one could say the Define S now has better airflow
>>
>>55545997
Yeah I'll be getting the unwindowed one if I do, and that's the thing, I'd like to have the freedom to go into something because this will most likely be my case for a long time. How loud does it get and any more detail on your experience? What do you have in it 'cause I'll be having some pretty high end shit in it.

>>55546033
>>55546038
>>55546012
Ah okay, for some reason I thought it was smaller. So is the S an improvement on the 5 or the other way round? Or are they standalone? Like what's its purpose for existing with the r5

Sorry for my clunky writing style and constant questions, just trying to find out and learn all this stuff
>>
>>55545947

Weren't those cases supposed to be good?
>>
>>55546103
The define S reduced features such as having no fan controller
>>
>>55546110
They are supposed to be good. The front allows tons of flow in however at the time I did not have the money to get a new exhaust fan for the top so the stock is what I have and once I replace that it should be smooth sailing.
>>
>>55546110
Also for being mostly stock it is really quiet even when the fans are max.
>>
>>55546103
R5 has a fan controller, a quick release system on the right side panel, an extra fan can be placed on the botton of the case andhas 2 more 3.0 usb ports
>>
>>55546103
The Define S is basically a R5 with added mounting options but with no optical bays or hard drive cages. If you don't need an optical drive or more than 3 hard drives it is a better and cheaper option.
>>
>>55546103
there are plenty of video reviews of the Define S on youtube, most of them compare them to the R5 and explain the differences.

It's really pretty quiet overall. I mean, it's about 2 feet away from me next to my desk so if I'm really still then I can hear the mild whir of my power supply and case fans but I'm almost always listening to music or playing a game if I'm at my PC so it doesn't bother me at all. I think the components inside the case ultimately will determine the noise level for the most part although having the dampening can't hurt. The extra insulation probably comes at a slight cost to thermals but I'm not an extreme overclocker (5820k at 3.7 on air) so everything is pretty cool anyway.

Anyway here's my speccy from a month or two ago. I don't think anything has changed since this speccy.
>>
>>55546236
The R5 is an excellent case even if it is not my pick. You will be very happy with it.
>>
>>55545317

Is having the option to have multiple fans at the top and sides of a case worth it?
>>
>>55545849
The whole rig is near silent, it just gives a low hum and like I say the HDD is the loudest part.

You can't hear it over speakers or a headset even under load.
>>
>>55546033
also Define S doesn't have a titanium version which looks a 100 times better
>>
>>55546307
With how thermally efficient most good CPU and aftermarket GPUs are on air these days? I seriously think it's overkill. I'm sure you could dig up benchmarks that show what the actual delta in temperature is but after a certain point you're just adding more noise.

I love my R4. It is the best case I've ever owned, by far. Not only is the fit and finish excellent, but the design and layout is great.

I know a guy who spent something like $500 on some stainless steel Lian-Li case. The thing is a rattly piece of shit. Meanwhile my R4 is blissfully silent.
>>
What do you think guys about Carbide 100R?
>>
>>55547396
I was really thinking about getting one but it's not wide enough for coolers like the 212 evo it seems.
>>
>>55545803
How much does the case vibrate? I've ordered one yesterday because my actual 40$ led gaymur case is vibrating and rattling like mad when the hdd is seeking, so is actually amplifying noises. So I thought that the define S would be the best option for me but I'm still unsure. I also keep my pc on a crappy ikea-like desk that also vibrates alongside the case when fans start to spin under load and the hdd seeks, it's driving me insane, I hope that I made the right choice
>>
>>55546505

Why do people who don't overclock complain about temperatures then?

So I'm a boring faggot and want the plainest case possible while still being quality. The only qualifications I need are ATX and room for at least four drives. Preferably no/few 5.25" bays as well since I have no use for them.

They shouldn't. I mean, I don't know how strict you would have to be to think any non-overcloced CPU would be running too hot. Even on a stock cooler it should be fine wihout OC, just louder.

I bought this guy for a recent build, and I honestly like it. I would have definitely gotten a Fractal R5 if it was in my budget, but poorfag.

Still, the airflow in it is nice and it looks pretty good. Lots of okay features, but it is sort of flimsy. 7/10 case.

I have a DH15 in one computer and a 212 Hyper Evo in another. 212's fan is so damn loud compared to noctua's, and the dh15 cools better since heat gets pushed out faster with the dual fan setup. I can get only up to 4.4GHz on my haswell refresh on the Evo, but stick the noctua on there and all 4 cores can reach 4.7GHz stable.
