Hey /g/ents so my 7 year old laptop (Toshiba Satellite L650) can't run most modern games and that's okay, but old-ish games like Skyrim and Max Payne 3 make it run hot and eventually it shuts down
I played Skyrim on it back at launch no problemo, so my guess is either CPU or GPU overheats, so what are my options here?

I wish I "could", but I'm continuing my studies and it's kind of uncertain for how long I will stay at the new place, and building one and hauling it around is not the ideal for me right now. It's not even for the gaming aspect, I just worry it might evolve into not handling menial tasks

Nah, I just want to play the ocasional CSGO and not start a house fire, I just put a SSD, if this laptop lasts me 3 more years I'd be happy, I won't have much time for gaming in the meantime

Hold can upside down for better effect.
Get some compressed air and use it on the vents. If you know what ur doing you can open it up, clean out the dust and put on new thermal paste. Make sure it's well ventilated and on a flat surface.
