So I got myself one of these and I'll end up gutting it and making it ATX compatible sometime.
I just bought it for the case but it turns out it's working perfectly, so before I go ahead and take it apart; are there any neat things you can do on PowerPC OS X?

Using this Pro 1 1 as my daily driver, it's not without flaws but it's functional. The computer was free and I've only spent ~100 dollars putting hardware into it including the 32gb of ram in the mail.

Not sure what it would be useful for. I just finished repairing an old 2006 Intel Macbook Pro. Might just use it as a shitposting machine. Not sure if I'm going to keep OSX or install Debian. 160GB seems like a fair amount of space to hold all my rare Pepes either way.

I bought a fully functional powermac g5 for $30 from a friend the same purpose

I decided to install linux on it for fun but I get horrible artifacting on the screen because the gpu isnt compatible or something, so I have to use software rendering which fucking blows.

the fact that it has two watercooled PPC cpus is pretty cool.

What particular model do you have? I wouldn't gut it if it was something nice, I think the Intel Mac Pros are better candidates for ATX conversion anyway, more expansion capability and the hardware isn't as special.

I've got a 2 GHz dual-core G5, it's a pretty good runner, some of the fastest affordable non-x86 hardware you can get your hands on, lots of software you can get for them through the Macintosh Garden among others, I mostly use mine for emulation and general putpose stuff like web browsing.

You can also run exotic platforms like MorphOS on them, if you want to try something new.

I got one of these for free a few days ago.
It was running OS X but that felt really slow, so I installed OS 9 instead.
It's my first encounter with OS 9 and I'm liking it so far.
Best things to run on it now are Classilla and Myst.

I'm the dude with the 2006 MB Pro. I got a 32GB USB flash drive. Went on the pirate bay and torrented OSX 10.7 Lion. Then I used a Windows program called transmac to format the flash drive and write the OSX install DMG to it. After that I just plugged it into the mac and pressed the option key while booting. Went into disk utility and wiped the HDD. Then I installed OSX on it. Sounds complicated but it took me about 45 minutes.
>>
>>55542633
Not uncommon for older Mac hardware to officially max out at whatever was available at the time they first shipped. Higher density memory usually ships long after the release of these things. I had a 68k mac that officially maxed out at something odd like 12MB, but ran fine with 32MB salvaged from old 486 boxes.

Old Mac general? Sweet.

So I have a neat little 12" G4 iBook, which actually runs pretty well, although web browsing is pretty slow. Currently have it dual-booting both Tiger and Leopard, since the former still has Classic support, but the latter has slightly more modern software available. However, I cannot for the life of me get Classic mode working under Tiger. I took an existing System Folder from several sources, including an even older G3 iBook I have lying around, and it refuses to recognize it. I've read something about having to "bless" it, but that never seems to work. Everywhere else I go seems to suggest it should just werk.

Anyone know what's up?

Tiger ran great on the G5s and speedier G4s. I like the look of Leopard and Snow Leopard better though. I wouldn't recommend running any of this connected to a network as its all horrifically outdated. I really wish Debian had included PPC in Wheezy long term support as there are KMS issues with video cards in newer kernel versions. You will also have to tinker with blacklisting audio modules and adding important ones like windfarm or whatever the module is that keeps your G5 from taking flight. I would love to have an Open Power server, but they're so god damn expensive I'll have to settle for an ARM Cello.

Believe it or not, PPC is still supported and being worked on in the Linux kernel. Obviously nowhere near the support it use to get. Freescale still makes PPC processors and newer IBM Power CPUs are supported under ppc64el architecture.

I don't think it's really much to worry about unless you're running it as a server, which you can remedy pretty easily using updated packages off of homebrew. Tiger has up to date web browsers too, and OS X disables pretty much all potentially insecure services by default.

Besides, it seems pretty much all of the major CVEs I've seen skimming around for these kinds of discussions in the past seem to all require you to install some sort of malicious application on your system before the attacker can execute code remotely.

This thread is for the appreciation of older technology. Most of you are probably 13 and have no clue what this thread is really about. Too young to remember how good Apple used to be. This place truly has gone down the shitter.

Now to anyone over the age of 18, what's the oldest Macbook that runs Mavericks? I'd like to buy one as my daily driver for light photo editing and dual booting with Debian (XFCE). I'm more interested in a metal one than plastic. I don't want anything under 11 inches. Price isn't a concern but the point of buying a used one is that I'm not paying as much as I would for a new one.

Debian Squeeze was the last just werks Linux distro for PPC Macs in my experience. Wheezy was alright but took some adding and blacklisting modules. depending on the hardware, to get things working right. Jessie uses a newer kernel which introduces KMS issues. If you're running a straight up headless server, the windfarm module is the only thing you need to worry about. Does 3d acceleration work properly on Open/FreeBSD?

This a thread for the appreciation of old technology. If you don't like it, why are you bumping it?

So can anyone here tell me some good reasons why this thread shouldn't be up? What's wrong with using old macbooks? You can use Windows and GNU/Linux on them but some of the really old versions of OSX aren't too bad. My mac is still working fine after 10 years. So why the hate? Nobody is telling you to buy anything. Hide the thread if it bothers you all so much. Let it 404. There's no good reason not to buy old hardware unless you're /v/ cancer. You stupid nigger, it's not spying. They take telemetry data to see how people actually USE the OS so they can know what to improve.
They're not just collecting it so they can fap to how many windows you have open at a time, but so they can know how many windows the average person has open at a time.

I simply do not understand why you morons give them such a hard time for trying to do research to improve usability of their products. Fact is, they can't rely on surveys because people don't truly know how they use their computer and some would be downright dishonest if asked. Telemetry is just measured metrics they can use to get an accurate view of how users use.

Imagine a giant cock flying towards your mouth, and there's nothing you can do about it. And you're like "Oh man, I'm gonna have to suck this thing", and you brace yourself to suck this giant cock. But then, at the last moment, it changes trajectory and hits you in the eye. You think to yourself "Well, at least I got that out of the way", but then the giant cock rears back and stabs your eye again, and again, and again. Eventually, this giant cock is penetrating your gray matter, and you begin to lose control of your motor skills. That's when the giant cock slaps you across the cheek, causing you to fall out of your chair. Unable to move and at your most vulnerable, the giant cock finally lodges itself in your anus, where it rests uncomfortably for 4, maybe 5 hours. That's what using a Mac is like.
