So we've established that the Android 'hotdog' menu was a retarded design choice.
The solution was apparently to copy the iOS menu but put it on the top of the screen (as FaceBook does here);
I'm writing an app for both iOS and Android with React (so using the same code).
Is there a design that works for both platforms so I don't have to write OS specific code?

Nice to see you pay attention to the details that matter. Literally every app that has 1M+ users use this design paradigm.

App developers need to stop trying to be "innovative". Just put some fucking labeled buttons. There never was a problem with these so stop trying to "fix" them.
Nobody is going to use your shitty JavaScript webapp. Develop a real, native app.

Position? Apparenly iOS users miss the menu button when it's on the top. Like 7% couldn't find the CTA.
