well, i am student in engeenering and i learned all that i know in an olimpic in informatics, there is one in usa, the usaco i think, i am from mexico and i like to solve problems and practice in omegaup.com/ ...
so the best way may be is to have friends that know about that, browse in the internet the usefull data structures, read all about that and trade solving problems
