Altera systems prefer VHDL
Xilinx systems prefer Verilog
There is generally more documentation available for one or the other given whatever platform you're using. Learn what is appropriate for the hardware your lab bought

I had used verilog to use create a simple CPU with 16 instructions (actually 8, the rest is immediate versions).
It was fun but never transferred it to an FPGA. just simulated it.
