I bought an rtl-sdr a few weeks ago and set up an ADS-B receiver to track aircraft in my area. I'm using the stock antenna I got with it, and with that I'm able to track aircraft over 150 miles away.
I'm using dump1090-mutability and virtual radar server to do this.
