If you SLI 970s, you going to hit the vram before you hit max settings in gta v. Extrapolate from there for future games.
If a good custom 970 hits $200 (without rebate) or less I might buy one, but going for dual 970s is silly at this point.

Well go for it then if you want and the price is right, I can't judge for you here. At 1080p you'll probably be fine. Just have to turn down memory hog settings. And memory usage is going up faster than anyone postulated a few years back.
I have two Asus gtx970 in sli, at 1080p I benchmark the same as a gtx 980ti in games that support it.

970's are all over craigslist in my area for around 220. I still see people selling 7970's for around 200 and I'd buy one of those over a 970 any day. Mint 380's and 290's are 150-200 even. Nvidia cards are mostly trash on there mate. There's some poor soul that got screwed by shlomo and couldn't return his 1070 and is selling it for 470 cash.
