How does using a VPN actually make torrenting safer?
What's stopping the company that owns the VPN from giving away your IP when they get fined for torrenting?

Because the data pachages are encrypted in a way that not even the company providing the VPN knows to whom it "belongs" even if they'd be forced to find out. The companies know exactly what their VPNs are used for, if they'd either be able or easily willing to give your information away noone would pay for VPNs.

Then the VPN's reputation would be tarnished heavily and nobody would want to use it.
Think of it like your drug dealer started becoming known as the guy who rats people out. You would probably switch drug dealers.
