They just think to be superior because they installed a somewhat hard to install distro.

It's a curse. Arch is actually a pretty good distro and got some popularity back then - but with everything that goes popular, it gets infected with normalfags; people who install it because they've seen it at some screenfetch and want to "be part" of a club that only started to exists because of them.
Not all Arch users are bad. There are even freetards running Arch.

>>
Arch is now what gentoo was at its idiot ricer phase.
Flooded with people that just blindly follow the comprehensive installations introduction because they feel they learn something that way and that it's some sort of badge of honor to go through it. People that don't even know what they want out of a Linux distro but still insist on customizing everything because it gives them the illusion of being a "l33t hacker" and in control.
>>
>>55503550
They pretend their distro is really good but they actually have no idea how linux is built and have no idea how simple arch really is. So they parade around forums acting like linux is something to be elitist over and it is not a tool, and shitting on any other distribution and its userbase. They are usually under 18, very enraged and have nothing useful to say. Never have I seen them to do anything productive with linux and really make use out of the toolset it provides to developers, server admins and enthusiasts, usually they just install a window manager like the rest of us anyway.

Nice.

>>
>>55503729
Debian has a good community but most of the people who brag about using Gentoo have only been using it for maybe a year or two. Gentoo community is actually very respectable and they don't treat noobs like garbage. I see more younger adults in the Debian community.
>>
>>55503948
Except he didn't do anything to the strawman. He's stated something and asked others to explain it. There would be no purpose to a strawman (which that isn't) if it were phased as a question and only that. You could disagree on the fact (community being toxic), but that does not make the question a logical fallacy.

A strawman would be

>>arch is a good distro
>arch is a trash distro and anyone who disagrees is literally autistic. debian is the best distribution and apt trumps pacman in every single way. Name one reason I'm not correct. Protip: you can't.

That's a strawman post.

>because if you manage to create a workable and enjoyable enviroment out of arch
>must be either linus himself or god

I've been doing something similar using another distro. Piecing together software to make a good whole is not a feat of technical knowledge. None of my ee or comp sci knowledge came in to play. It's more a matter of time.

It's things like I wish I could do A.

1. Try 4 different distros/spins that do that.
2. I like the way B does it. Figure out what B uses to do A. It uses C,D,E to accomplish A.
3. Read through documentation on C, D, and E to get an idea how they are configured.
4. Go back to B and look at the way C,D, and E are configured to work together to do A.
5. Read docs on C,D,and E for anything that you need to change from B to work with your environment F.
6. Watch it break.
7. Read docs on C,D, and E on how to get debug info from C,D,and E.
8. Check logs and read through C,D,E to see what they mean and how you misunderstood said docs.
9. Make changes.

I did this long enough to get a system I could work with and then just fixed things as I went. I'm pretty happy with my system but I still make changes using this system. It's all reading stuff and copy and pasting it in to configs.
>>
>>55503550
It's not that welcoming to those who don't know much about Linux. I assume that's because it's an enthusiast distro and if you're asking basic questions, you probably shouldn't be using Arch.

Lots of enthusiast things are the same.
>>

It was Fedora, not Ubuntu.

Arch dropping the TUI installer was actually the last straw for me (I'm still using Arch on my ARM device because there are no better alternatives for it)
"We can't be bothered to update it anymore. Our retard users are happy to go through pointless bullshit anyway"

And no, following the wiki step-by-step does not make you a l33t h4x0r, all it does is cost time. Arch's very simple installer was already quite flexible and allowed you to do most steps manually if you had an actual need for it. But it still saved you time and let you go through with it without having to look at the wiki.

>Why's the Arch community so toxic?

Because that's where all the Ubuntu users from 2004 to 2009 migrated to. I remember because I was there when it happened. Daily Arch threads in the Other OS, and then later, the CC section of the forum. The UF IRC as well as some better known UF bloggers started to all move to Arch.

It became a symbol for l33tness in the Ubuntu community, and spread like a cancer to all the rest of the Linux communities.

By 2010, the cancer had spread too far and became self sustaining. That is the Arch community today.

Configuration is totaly optional, I dont think you even understand how OS and kernel work really, anyway, I am into arch for more than 6 months, and I am still every day scripting something new to make my life easier, and once you reach point where most of the things are done by scripts, you just laugh at people like you who are too lazy to try it
>>
>>55503550
2 things - command line installation and configuration. So what happens is you have to follow instructions. Once you've loaded the base system, you install the software that you want. So basically you learn how modular programs work together and how to configure them.

What you end up with is a system that is tailor made to your specification. This is good. But what you also end up with is a user with a totally inflated sense of their own self worth and a judgemental attitude towards anyone who has made different choices.

>Arch is actually a pretty good distro

The "KILLER FEATURE" AUR is nothing but a insecure git wrapper.
Arch is bloated: comes with all kernel modules enabled, packages include both, sources and binaries.
Arch teaches nothing about linux, except how to copy paste guide commands.
Pacman can't distinguish between free and nonfree packages. Why? Because Arch has only one repo.
And last but not least: The community is trash. Nobody wants to be part of a community full of scriptkids who need to tell everyone, everyday how 1337 arch is.

He clearly said that he doesn't know shit about maintaining a system, all he knows is about developing his babby kernel and even the kernel he doesn't develop himself, all he does is writing examples and approving pull requests.

Gentoo in a nutshell. I'd like to emphasize the nut in nutshell, too.

The actual problem with Arch is that it doesn't respect the user's freedoms.
>>
>>55507234
this basically makes arch comparable to the same crap like ubuntu/mint

>I don't know why people boast about getting it installed.
Because if you look at all the controversy the Arch haters create over it, you'd naturally think it's something special. Your average /g/tard is impressionable as fuck, most of them fall for the stupidest of shit, and are every bit as bad as the Macfags the majority of them condemn. I mean, look at yourself, you're responding to a thread in which some child makes a random, opinionated, generalization, and taking it to be gospel truth. As an unbiased spectator, I can only come to the conclusion that /g/ itself is the toxic community. Cancer causing in every sense of the word.

This can be further proved by, you know, actually going on the Arch forums and seeing for themselves. Not that OP or anyone else bashing on Arch has actually done that
>>
>>55507336
OP is a reflection of what's happening. The truth is, most Arch users have no idea and installed it right away as their first babby Linux and feel the need to tell everyone about their succsess and that everyone else who can'T follow a guide is a noob. Doesn't mean that all Arch users are toxic, but most of them. Proof me wrong.

Now that it's more or less accepted that Arch memes are memes, let's just attack the community instead, because we're haters, and haters hate.

also suggests corollaries: highly skilled individuals may underestimate their relative competence and may erroneously assume that tasks which are easy for them are also easy for others

Been a professional linux sysadmin for almost a decade. Our company has been cheap lately when it comes to bringing on new hires so they just fill the gap with a bunch of unpaid interns from the local community colleges and stuff. In my experience, most of the interns that are using more generic distros like Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, etc. are really humble and willing to learn. All the Arch users I have run into are complete cancer, unprofessional and think they know everything and will talk up and down how RHEL is shit etc. Definitely had to let a couple Arch interns go...

This, it's funny how you go to a thread which starts as complaining about the arch community being toxic (at best an SJW-tier tactic), the you read the thread and they're showing the same exact behavior or even worse they're supposedly complaining about, being the most cringy part that there's practically no technical argument or a reasoning, most of the thread is name calling and claims about feeling like the victim of the opinions of random individuals on the internet which they generalize as "almost all arch users". Also i don't get that inferiority complex they have or why they feel like they're being looked down by most arch users. You guys are the living proof that there are idiots on all the communities!

This attitude is toxic to a community. Stallman and even Torvald's attitude to the OS community is that everyone can help contribute even if it is just reporting something is broken.

We cannot better those lacking if we just shoot them down...how will they learn? How will they want to learn? We must encourage then endorse then teach. We do not all have time to teach so they must be encouraged to be motivated and seek out knowledge of their own accord (I.E. occasionally dropping a hint and saying 'google it' is okay based on context).
>>
>>55508945
Why would you send a newcomer to a spying engine like google? Fuck off.
>>
Arch users are frustrated, they want to be able to claim they understand Linux but are too dumb to use Gentoo.
>>
>>55508944
and that's the best arguments? sorry, not convinced that arch is bad. Also one of those arguments is name calling and can be used for describing the anti-arch community in this thread too.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.
Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
