I want a 6320 and z170 board to OC for that insane single thread performance but the 6700k matches it and its rocking 8 threads. If you can afford I'd buy the i7. It's just has so much performance.

I'm afraid HT is a must now in some games. I've experienced bottleneck first hand in Witcher 3 and GTA 5 with 3570. Thankfully upgrading to w10 dropped my usage by 20% so I don't have to upgrade yet but now I'm stuck with botnet OS.

If you can afford a GPU that gets 100fps on Crysis 3 Ultra you should be able to afford an i7.
There is no clear-cut answer but I reckon in a slight majority of cases (i.e. budget, screen resolution, typical games played) it's not worth it over an i5.
