How soon will we get 2TB micro SD cards?

It's been 2 years and the best we have are 256GB micro SD cards. What's taking these fuckers so long?

They will get replaced with something that can transfer data faster but can carry less, just like SSDs and HDDs.

>It's been 2 years and the best we have are 256GB micro SD cards. What's taking these fuckers so long?

Technically the best we have are 512GB cards, but you'd have to pay out the ass for one.

1: You'd need an as of yet nonexistent material for it.
2: Most devices can't read a card that large anyway.

>there is an absolute limit to how small you can make a transistor

>>mfw thinking about how hot these fucking things get
Aren't smaller transistors supposed to produce less heat? Isn't this why 14nm skymeme processors are cooler than 32nm faildozer housefires?
>>
>>55501445
>what are 3D transistors
how does this affect the size of a transistor such that they can be made infinitely small like you suggesting

maybe if we had 4D transistors you'd be on to something
>>
>>55501372
You don't understand engineering or physics. It cannot be done.
>>
>>55501437
>2: Most devices can't read a card that large anyway.
Wrong. The SDXC spec supports up to 2TB of storage. If your Android phone has an SDXC micro SD slot then it's REQUIRED to accepts 2TB SDXC micro SD cards.

>"The Secure Digital eXtended Capacity (SDXC) format, announced in January 2009 and defined in version 3.01 of the SD specification, supports cards up to 2 TB (2048GB), compared to a limit of 32GB for SDHC cards in the SD 2.0 specification."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital#SDXC

Most phones today have that SDXC micro SD slot.

>but can carry less, just like SSDs
Oh boy (Image related) I hope you meant to say "at first" and just forgot to.

>>55501445
>what are 3D transistors
Something you clearly know nothing about.
They don't magically reduce the amount of space required for something, they just enable you to get more circuitry layered on the Y axis, you'd still need to increase the size on the Z axis, not to mention that also introduced a whole slew of heat issues.

>Aren't smaller transistors supposed to produce less heat? But you're not talking about just making them smaller, you're talking about packing more of them into the same amount of space, whenever you increase the density of components occupying the same space you also increase heat generated. Why the fuck do you think the newest gaming PCs radiate like a fucking furnace when 20 years ago you didn't even need a fan on a top of the line GPU?

Not him but V-NAND increases storage capacity by stacking memory cells on top of each other without having to shrink the transistor size.

It works so well that Samshit has been able to cram ~16TB of storage in a 2.5" laptop size SSD which you can literally buy right now.

And this scales infinitely? You can contain an infinite amount of memory in a given, finite volume? If not, then I said nothing wrong.

Also given that the subject is microSD cards, in the processing of changing the thickness/volume of them (in order to fit your precious 3D transistors), they will no longer be microSD cards.
>>
>>55501516
> Why the fuck do you think the newest gaming PCs radiate like a fucking furnace when 20 years ago you didn't even need a fan on a top of the line GPU?
This is very true, and can also be easily seen just by looking at power requirement increases.

I bought a 256GB MicroSD for shits and giggles, it was only $29 on eBay. Dragged a 1GB file onto it and it took up 16GB space on it. So it was actually just a 16GB MicroSD and they just modified the hardware ID and data to display as 16x it's original size.

The beauty of it? These companies don't care. I refunded my money, they didn't care, they didn't even care I kept the MicroSD card. I ended up getting like 10 MicroSD's from them and I flashed them with a SanDisk 16GB MicroSD firmware and ID. I guess the amount of buffoons that buy these en masse outweighs the few that will notice and get a refund.
>>
>>55501576
>And this scales infinitely?
Well no but this gives us more time until the tech technological breakthrough in data storage comes along.

>Also given that the subject is microSD cards, in the processing of changing the thickness/volume of them (in order to fit your precious 3D transistors), they will no longer be microSD cards.
Not really, stacking 128GB memory cell layers 16 times (ie 2TB) won't increase thickness by much. While the transistors would be ~20nm their thickness is probably less. However doing something like this would be expensive as fuck right now.
>>
>>55501620
>Well no but this gives us more time
Let me say this one more fucking time so you can get it through your fucking head, YOU CANNOT FIT AN INFINITE AMOUNT OF DATA INTO A FINITE AMOUNT OF SPACE.
Because this is true, it must also be true that there is a physical limit on the size of transistors, and therefore my original statement was correct.
Don't reply to me or this thread ever again.

You first said "there is a limit to how small a transistors can get" which I understand and some anon mentioned 3D NAND. Nobody is saying 3D NAND will scale infinitely in a given space but it increases storage capacity with the same transistor size to an extent.

Also it's interesting that you mentioned that there is a "limit" to how small transiators can get. How can you be so sure? What if we do discover some quantum 4D ayy lmao tech and we keep shrinking transistor sizes more and more and never stop?

UFS is a massive meme. We already have UHS-II microsd cards which are backward compatible with UHS-I microsd card slots (found in 90% of modern smartphones. Max bus transfer speed is 312MB/s.

UFS isn't even backwards compatible with UHS-I so it's already DOA.

We haven't near reached the maximum amount of data/space we could possibly achieve. We're very very far from being able to fit a byte of data in the smallest measurable spaces, and even if we do who knows what might be beyond that. I can smell the fact that you're an engineer and not a scientist from a mile away.

>>
>>55501883
Like I said, what you wrote in caps is very far from being reached. Very very ridiculously far. And why do you limit data storage to transistors? Sounds like bullshit that your crappy engineer mind can't think past.
>>
>>55501938

The discussion is specifically about microSD cards, and it's very contemporary (read the OP). So you can continue jerking off about "quantum 4D ayy lmao tech" and ignore this thread.

Single electron transistors when

>>55501445
>Aren't smaller transistors supposed to produce less heat? Isn't this why 14nm skymeme processors are cooler than 32nm faildozer housefires?

yes. a single 14nm transistor consumes less electricity and consequently produces less heat than a comparable 32nm transistor.

if intel wanted to for example they can take a 2500k and release it on a 14nm die. pulling numbers out of my ass here, could drop its power consumption from 95 watts down to 35 watts and thus less heat.

or they could jam the space with more transistors, keep the wattage and heat production around the same, and increase performance as a result instead.

Too bad that they aren't backwards compatible though.

After all the micro-sd standard is so damn big, that phasing it out is going to take some time.
