What computing shakeups are we in for in our lifetime?

For example, saying goodbye to volatile storage (RAM, maybe not CPU caches) as our non volatile storage reaches RAM speeds.
>>
Convergence. Soon people will be carrying around Ubuntu phones and plugging them into portable or stationary screens, dedicated PCs will be obsolete.
>>
Communication standard that allows for high enough data transfer and video transfer rates on a single plug to extend the more and more powerful smartphones to fully fledged PC-like devices by plugging them into screen/keyboard docks. This standard will be different across manufacturers at first and will eventually settle there or four years later
>>

I'm surprised we don't have this already. What's the closest we have? Plugging ultra portable laptops into monitors?
>>
>>55501120
Windows phones can do this cant they? I know for a fact the HP Windows Phone can.
>>
>>55501120
Yes but that kind of misses the point. You're not just mirroring a display, you're changing the functionality of the device to fit the medium of input.

>tfw transistors still measured in nm and not planck units
>tfw no 10^44hz processors

why live
>>
>>55501276
You don't have to wait til then, the technology is already working on Ubuntu phones. Granted they're hard to get a hold of right now and not yet ready for use as a daily driver. But the kernel, snap packages, unity 8 etc. technology that makes this possible is working.
>>
I see the exact opposite to OP's situation happening. At least for consumers. Cloud Networking and the availability of electricity literally anywhere means we'll be seeing a move to completely volatile storage systems, with physical storage becoming rare to reduce costs and save on weight in many consumer electronics.
If power sources continue to get more efficient and smaller, this is an inevitability. Of course for industrial and military use proprietary physical storage will see continued use.
>>
>>55501298
What exactly would you build a planck scale processor out of?
>>
>>55501298
Fun fact: we're capping out on the physical minimums of transistor size, at least insofar as our current technology allows. Without some breakthrough in atomic/quantum matter manipulation, transistor efficacy will stagnate in the next few decades.

just use smaller atoms
>>
>>55501365
Quarks or even virtual particles. A transistor can consist of any singular particle that can change the flow of information, typically in the form of electricity.
Hell a single atom can be a transistor if we could work at that scale consistently, without really changing how anything works.
>>
>>55501385
You realize a planck unit is way smaller than any of those, right?
>>
>>55501380
Get this man a raise.
>>
>>55501062
See anon you're a retard. You physically cannot transcribe the same amount of info as a computer, at similar speeds, with smaller components. Beckenstein says fuck off.
>>
>>55501380
4chen no.
>>
>>55501394
You do know that some subatomic particles only fit our understanding of quantum physics when measured as points on a 2D plane and that virtual particles may not even physically exist as anything but a background force, right?
Any amount of 3D space > 2D space and "may not tangibly exist"

Cloud computing, all computers will be a glorified remote monitors
Its like microsoft azure but in a huge consumer level
its gonna be cheaper, less hadware problems, any hardware will be available and the only downside is you need a fast internet connection

Fuck quarks. Why don't we just use strings? Open strings can be 1s and closed strings can be 0s. Problem solved.

There are few models of them, ranging from $50 to $485.

I'd probably just use it as a normie desktop and for emulating old console games. There's a video on YouTube showing how you can actually game on it (2GB variant) which gave me the idea of turning it into an emulator, it seems more powerful than a raspberry pi.
>>
>>55501406
I specifically said that phones would be more powerful and this would be akin to a dock that could be used like a pc. I didn't say it was a pc replacement.

This. The only thing you'd need would be a monitor/smart tv and a reliable 32MB/s connection, or 4-8 for lower fps and lower quality images or lower resolutions.
>>
>>55501612
I agree with this, but as an apocalyptic end to computing as we know it. Standalone digital electronics will become illegal or drive out of the consumer market some other way because they can be used for terrorism and pedophilia. The only way to access digital information is through government sanctioned cloud computing devices.
>>
>>55501385
>quarks or even virtual particles
Physicist here. We can't do that according to our current understanding of quantum physics. Due to color confinement, you can't observe color charged particles individually. On the other hand, virtual particles are off-shell particles and can't be observed.
>>
>>55501029
this has been possible for years. samsung even makes docks for the galaxy series specifically for this.

plug the phone into dock...dock has a display port and a couple of usb ports. shit works alarmingly well.

jut about any android phone with micro hdmi has been able to do this shit since 2013-ish
