Even though it's listed as supporting E-ATX I don't think they ever actually did a test fit, that hard drive cage just barely fits under the board even with the clips bent

Still, cheapest desktop case by far you can buy that somewhat fits a server board

I don't think my AMD housefire card gets cooling to speak of either despite the huge fucking case.

I don't use them because I like my optiplex to be clean with a single slot card, and my needs aren't great enough for a dual slot card. That's a damn good deal, I like the 755, doesn't have the capacitor problems of the 745s made in 2007, can do a raid array on the motherboard and they support the 45nm core 2 chips that clock really high.
>>
>>55503282
Thing is, the back hooks for the cooler, are nonexistent. The crackhead who sold it to me apparently took them off....and it still runs pretty cool if my face isn't in the front exhaust fan's 2 foot blast radius lmao
>>
>>55503282
another problem with 2 slot cards is prying the CMOS battery out, thing scares the shit outta me when at first I can't reach to where it flung to.

If Dell didn't cuck their motherboard design, and stuck to a standard, I'd be behind them. But the fact that I'm stuck to this case, and the shit aesthetics, makes me mad at them.
>>
>>55503497
Damn that sucks, my original optiplex 745 must've been in a crackhead because they hot glued the RAM slots, and it broke one of them when I removed the original ram, which is another reason besides capacitors, why I replaced it

>>55503518
If Dell made these optiplexes ATX with the big ass heatsink and industrial design, it'd be the best oem pc money can buy.
>>
>>55503538
What BIOS version are you on? I'm stuck on A09, when there's all the way to A21 and anytime I try to flash it gives an error that the file isn't in memory (which, if it stashed it in RAM and expects it to be there on reboot, I've got news for it)
>>
>>55503570
I have the 2.6.6 bios from 2011 on my 745, it was the last one the made. My optiplex 745 is weird, I can even downgrade the BIOS, and go back to the new one whenever, its totally cool with it for some reason.

Not him, but xeons are really good for heavy workloads, the binning process is better, so they can run low volt cores and run cooler when you max them out in a video editing render or if you're using it as a server and it's being worked constantly.

I am using a Noctua NH-D14 and the x5470 is lapped but temps and my lack of voltage knowledge with the are still holding me back from overclocking the CPU further, but at 1440p I still average 45fps in most new games which isn't bad for a $450 upgrade.
>>
>>55504238
Well, the CX650M was a decently reviewed PSU so I thought I'd try it out...

I'm kinda not wanting a Super Flower due to a friend's silver rated 650W failing with a 750TI.
It would boot up normally but reboot when he booted up a game. He later bought a Thermaltake SmartDPS 750W and the issue went away, he latter upgraded to a 980TI.

TLDR
SuperFlower silver rated 650W psu PCI-E rail fail.

With the CPU and GPU both overclocked I'd guess this PC would consume close to 350W at maximum load, though it would never get even close to that in a real usage scenario. Hell, I could comfortably run three 1070s on my EVGA G2 750W.

>>
>>55504343
I actually had to overclock the gtx 970 to get it 1440p to run smooth, but I could only push the core clock up +135 and the upping the volts seems to have no effect, not sure if all the 970s are like this or just the MSI version, either way it is much better overclocked.

Q6600 at 3.6 is roughly 130-150 tdp (coolermaster v8 can barely handle it)

ATI HD4890 is 190 tdp.

So it's at least 300 tdp. Certified housefire.

>>
>>55505015
no if you flash a bios from another model youre going to brick it

have you found your max stable overclock yet and voltage?

post your bios i will mod it for you, you can use gpu-z to save the bios file.
>>
>>55505031
It is on another PC which I don't have access to right now, right now I can get to +135 without upping the voltage, but even with the voltage maxed +140 is not stable.
>>
>>55505064
Are you hitting perfcap ? power or voltage will drop clocks and make it unstable or maybe you just got unlucky and can't go higher there are multiple reason that could cause it to crash.

what model? the MSI 970 4G?

To get the most of out your card you need to be super specific, what clocks exactly are you getting and voltage, you need to monitor everything using msi afterburner because we want exact values.

Add me on steam
>>
>>55505106
It is the MSI 970 4G, I see artifacts and sometimes games will crash above +140 so I dropped it to +135 just to be safe but I could run it +140 with limited or no crashes, I just stared overclocking it last week so I don't know what perfcap is. I don't have a steam account. when I use Heaven, the test where it spins around the fountain I get the exact same artifact even at stock speeds so I am not sure if maybe there is a problem with my card or not. At +135 I have the power at 110 and and stock volts.
>>
>>55505106
The drivers crash when I get around +200 but I don't remember the exact number.

Are you overclocking the memory?

Graphics artifacts are usually a problem with the memory being too high.

Games/driver crashing is usually because too low voltage.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIdubmD3Tz0

Do this to monitor your GPU in game but also enable unlock voltage control/monitoring on the General tab and then in game like the rest.
That way you can read you in-game GPU Core clocks and voltage instead of "+145"

See what are you max clocks and voltage at stock settings first.
Then we start going higher from there.

Also get GPU-Z and check the Sensors tab where it says "PerfCap Reason"

vRel = Reliability. Indicating perf is limited by reliability voltage.
VOp = Operating. Indicating perf is limited by max operating voltage.
Pwr = Power. Indicating perf is limited by total power limit.
Thrm = Thermal. Indicating perf is limited by temperature limit.
Util = Utilization. Indicating perf is limited by GPU utilization.
>>
>>55505291
I had my roommate check it, the perfcap is Util and it is clocked at Boost 1393, I kept dropping the clock down due to that heaven artifact, which happens exactly the same each time, so now I am thinking I should disregard it and start over, I am not overclocking the ram yet.
>>
>>55505384
1393mhz is a okay boost clock, you might be able to hit 1500, it all depends on voltage you need to do what I told you to monitor everything first.

I' will be hanging around here all day so make a thread or something later

My rig just got completed a couple of hours ago, I'm in a hurry so I won't google the TDPs for everything, But it has a 6600K and a GTX960 (Second hand, will be upgraded to a 1070) and the best part of it is the Intel 750 400GB PCI-E.

zero regret. i love the case. i didn't run into any "restrictive" problems. i know some people complained about the cable management in the back in some reviews but i didn't run into those issues. i just took my time and routed the cables nicely.

three ssd's in the back ssd cage, two mechanical hard drives, strix 1080, 6700k, 32gb corsair plat ddr4 3000, sound blaster zx, nh-d15s, evga supernova p2 750, five cooler master pwm silencio 2400 for the case, two for the nh-d15s, and asus sabertooth z170 s all housed with ease. case is easy to work with. it actually looks nice in the back. none of the cables push against the back panel, and the back panel comes off and on with ease.

Try this.
https://my.mixtape.moe/ekrcxs.zip

Type CMD in the window address directory to open a command line windows, then type "nvflash 1519.rom" without the ". it should open another window asking you if you want to write the new bios file, check if the devices match if they dont the windows will close anyway, just click "Y" and restart the PC.

I included different files in case 1519.rom crashes, all besides the original file have voltage set to 1225.0mv.

1519.rom clocks to 1519mhz core and 3505(stock) memory
3905.rom clock to 1519mhz core and 3905 memory
4000.rom clocks to 1519mhz core and 4000 memory
1506 clocks to 1506mhz core and 3505(stock) memory
original.com is the original bios file keep it as backup if any of the above crashes or something simply flash this one.

I'd recommend starting with 1519.rom if it fails then move to 1506.rom.

Only move to 4000.rom and 3905.rom(if 4000.rom fails) if 1519.rom is stable.

If even 1506.rom fails then you might have gotten unlucky with a card that can't OC or you might need even more voltage.

in any case don't get discouraged if all fail, overclocking takes time.

I hope this question fits the thread.

1) My current PC have i5-750 CPU, GTX 660 card, 2x4gb DDR3 1600Mhz Corsair RAM, Gigabyte GA-P55-UD2 motherboard and some okay PSU I forgot the name. Can I upgrade this PC in some way or basically the only solution is to buy whole new one?

2) What time would be best for buying parts/new PC? I checked current ones and they are rather high, especially in case of Intel CPUs. Is there a chance that I will get better price if I will wait few months, say, until September?

Thanks for replies.
>>
>>55499736
>the liquid coolers make it even worse
I don't think you know how this works. Using liquid cooling won't do anything to your room temp.

Anyway
>4790K 88W
>2x290X 580W
>16GB RAM
So, ~670W for the main stuff, real-world with a 4.7GHz OC on the CPU and some mild OC on the graphics cards I get 700-750W power draw in games with the cards at 100% load.

>>
>>55511400

>>
>>55511039
>>55508139
I said liquid coolers make it worse because they take more heat out of the CPUs, so they naturally have more heat to dump into the air, it doesn't just disappear
>>
>>55511486
That's not how it works. If your CPUs are running the same (same clocks, turbo, no throttling, same voltage, etc.) then the amount of heat is dictated by the current they are using to function. Adding a liquid cooler changes absolutely nothing, the same amount of energy is dissipated as heat as long as the processor's parameters don't change and the heat is still eliminated in your room.

Temperature and heat are not the same thing, the lower temperature you get with a liquid cooler doesn't mean the power dissipation has changed, it only means that the thermal resistance from your CPU die to the ambient air in your room is lower.

So unless your CPUs are running at a higher power target due to the improved cooling (say turboing higher or not throttling, whereas they would throttle on air cooling) then you are dissipating literally the same amount of energy as heat in your room with or without liquid cooling.

Mind you, it seems like you're running x8/x8 PCI-E and only using a single SLI bridge, you may find pic related interesting.

lower temps will also lead to a slightly lower power draw due to less leakage. Though that will mostly be taken up by the additional heat the water pump is generating.
>>
>>55511711
Eh sure, but that should be entirely too tiny to ever notice in real-world use, shouldn't it? I'm no expert in that field by any stretch.

This was an interesting read.
A bit of research suggests it varies between games but I'm interested in adding a high bandwidth bridge now.
I definitely need to look into it is it's a difference in 8-15 fps.

Just when you think you've reached the summit there's always more..
>>
>>55511400
>>55511200
numa isn't supported in games.

>>
>>55511975
Yeah, sometimes it's very significant. If you haven't read the article until the very end, the guy says that using 2 regular (flex/ribbon) SLI bridges also provides the same results, so if you have another laying around I'd say you give it a try with both of them.

It's even more interesting, for instance I've been reading that DOOM doesn't scale (or even scales negatively) on x8/x8 mobos, but it seems that more bandwidth across the SLI bridge(s) can alleviate less bandwidth across PCI-E too. Pretty interesting and confusing.

To make it even more confusing, there are supposed to be 3 kinds of SLI bridges now:
>regular/flex bridges, the slowest
>so-called "LED" bridges, which are faster
>the HB bridge, fastest of all and essentially 2 bridges in 1
I'm going to run my 1080s on 2 flex bridges until my HB bridge gets here, I'm very curious about what results I'll get. I also very much hope I won't have to dump another $1k+ into an upgrade to a 6850K-based system to get x16/x16 on the cards and get proper scaling.
>>
>>55511975
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBP1cAl9N8U
>>
>>55512118
So, no difference with 2 regular bridges or the HB bridge, as the hardwareunboxed article also claims. It seems that not too many people looked into this, I'd love to see a more detailed investigation with test cases like:
>x8/x8 1 bridge
>x8/x8 2 bridges
>x8/x8 HB bridge
>x16/x16 1 bridge
>x16/x16 2 bridges
>x16/x16 HB bridge

50 - 20%
60 - 30%
70 - 50%

This is true. A closed computer case is literally a dust trap. You're bringing in multiple cubic feet of air every minute into a large container for the air velocity to slow and the dust to fall out before the air finally makes its way out.
An open case just gets what falls in. That's gonna be a fraction of a millimeter in 50 years.

I've been reading up on this since your first post.
I'll be returning the standard SLI bridge and ordering an LED or HB bridge, thanks for the info.
I'm running a 6700K-based system but don't appear to have any issues with scaling.
Though I have noticed some games scale much better than others. GTA runs great at 115-120 FPS on 1440p and 60-70fps on 4k.
Other games like Just Cause 3 only add 10-15fps running at 50 or so fps.
Far Cry 4 gets me 60 at 4k so i think dev support plays a major role.

I currently have an AMD FX-6100 I got when building my current PC in late 2012. I can't switch to Intel or use the new AMD architecture until I rebuild (which will be at least 2-3 years from now), so the furthest I can go is Piledriver (and I have to be careful there because some models seem to require water cooling). Would I get an appreciable upgrade from that, or will my 6100 be fine for the next few years?
