Reminds me of the time I wrote a C++ program to display a table of procedurally generated data in the command prompt, but somehow ended up displaying the contents of my Program Files directory instead. I still have no idea how that happened, the only bug I found in my code was that one of my non-void functions lacked a return statement.

Linus Torvalds is my hero because he fights for our freedoms. His passion for open source software and his genius in programming the Linux Operating System nigh singlehandedly makes him both an icon on par with Steve Jobs and a model for all people concerned with looking at source code (but not necessarily being able to modify it) to follow.

I also like how he doesn't push open source software onto people. Some people can be just as annoying as vegans, who try to go on and on about how much more ethical it is or how much healthier it is for you by following THEIR way of life, but it's like, you aren't me, Richard, so how can you know what's best for me? I'm happy using Windows 7. Eventually, I'll want to move on to an open source and privacy respecting Linux operating system like Ubuntu when I'm older and wiser and have learned a smattering of code (I'm thinking Java and C++), but for now, everything is working fine for ME, and that's what open source software is really all about. :)

Thanks for reading, guiz. If you want, I can give you the link to my tumblr, facebook, and instagram where I post a lot about my personal journey in open source.

Oops. One last question. I've been hearing a lot about this, but I'm not sure what it means: what's "free software"?

You don't know that. People do very dumb things in a row when they're barely learning to do something. Go fucking learn something new and reflect on how goddamn retarded you were right after you barely learned but before you grasped some semblance of proficiency. Teenagers learning to drive is probably the best example of this.

Not me, driving came entirely naturally to me, but I'm not talking about exceptional cases.

I got an email last semester from my professor who had trouble compiling my application.
Apparently, I had used lowercase instead of uppercase in my guide.

He sent me a screenshot asking what was wrong.
I mean the error message was pretty clear, "Cannot find file".
He is a really smart guy, but when he fails at the most basic things, I lose all respect.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.
Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
>>
>>55510573
critical error in this photo that kind of ruins it: later Microsoft operating systems were not distributed in 1.44 MB format (as is shooped onto the disk labels), but in a 1.7 MB proprietary format called "DMF".

you can read more about DMF here:
