Thats what i thought , don't get me wrong the mac pro looks good without a case but you can barely change any parts.

Trash can pc thread

How customizable or not is this thing? Does Apple still solder the RAM to the mobo? I've never bought an Apple product because I couldn't swap hardware or install the OS I wanted.
>>
>>55491469
Theres very little space but you can change the parts like ram, hard drive, battery etc.
>>
>>55491415
Why wouldn't you use a dedicated external component for audio? Anything they build in can't be that great.
>>
>>55491468
No, tyrone.
>>
>>55491551
i'm saying for microphone. Why should I need an external device to plug in my modmic for my headphones?

That is indeed stupid.

>no SPDIF
It does have that actually.

>only 4 USB
It's enough really. If you need more than that, use some hub. You probably won't use as many though.

>No PS/2
>no Serial port
Come on, that must be a joke.
>>
>>55491775
the greatest keyboard ever made uses PS/2, serial is extremely useful for networking applications and management

you might not realize this, but nearly all the sound chips in computers of all kinds since the standardization of DVD are more or less about the same -- that is, quite good -- the only differences are in the range of options

so, go ahead and pay $2000 for an external DAC, when the sound chip in your $150 compaq laptop from 2008 produces audio that is indistinguishably the same
>>
>>55491808
I work in a server room and no one touches anything to do with serial
>>
>>55492017
>when the sound chip in your $150 compaq laptop from 2008 produces audio that is indistinguishably the same
Fuck no. Have you actually tried the realtek shit they put into low to mid range mainboards during 2008? They were fucking horrible. Constant noise, cut-off treble, and distortions at higher volumes. There's no fucking way any professional would consider using shit like that. And this is not some audiophile bullshit criticism, anyone can hear that very clearly.

Anyway, you are right that they just should have put in a mic/line out, same goes for all their products. No idea why they removed it.
>>
>>55491808
>serial

Since the 90s the only thing serial gets used for is network gear console access.

Mouse, keyboard, trackball... only one left already.
Why would I have to put up with some more cable mess by using a hub?

Just hackintosh a mini itx system for 1500$ and get overall better performance than all of the above.

I was trying to make a point. Nobody uses SPDIF compatible devices. It is neither a necessity or a proper replacement of stereo jacks.

I own a PC. The onboard audio does not support S/PDIF. Why? Because my microphones and speakers use 3.5mm jacks. Like 99% of the audio device that have been manufactured for the past few decades.

But few will fitted once the industry starts following Apple yet again. But it will take the industry 5 years to spot a trend.

Guys you can just use adapters for most of this shit besides maybe PS/2. Even then I don't think many people can even justify it.

My HiFiMeDIY USB thing came with SPDIF in the 3.5mm jack. Didn't even realise, was a nice surprise. Gets me more volume than the regular audio out on my mobo anyhow.

The only reason someone gets a computer like that is brand/aesthetics.

Then they compromise later with adapters and such, if they even had the foresight for them.

All that matters for most users really is whether the hardware is capable of performing the functions you require in the timeframe you set.

You didn't state a single usage case. Just an OS and hardware you were considering using for whatever the mysterious purpose is.

Why are you guys all arguing in response to ANOTHER "is x useful for something I'm never going to tell you?" thread?

> my computer is so shit I have to buy a billion usb gadgets to use it

So many assumptions.
OP was probably given that thing as a gift and is considering selling it.
Personally I use a USB mouse, keyboard, mic, and that tiny USB DAC/amp.

Granted those single port macbooks are totally ridiculous, but this isn't what we're dealing with here. My only regret is not getting an ITX motherboard, and I'd only ever use a Mac if it was specifically for and provided by a workplace.

Get your head out of your ass. Not everyone has the same usage requirements.

In fact my key point was that OP never actually stated what he wanted to do with his computer after setting up Arch.
