Do you have a go-to brand for hard drives?
>>
>>55489537
There are so many options but i choose Seagate as the stable brand
>>
Hitachi bro
>>
I only use SSD's, but I'd probably buy a HGST or Hitachi, maybe a WD Black
>>
>>55489562
This, but WD bought Hitachi and I think SanDisk bought someone.
>>
>>55489537
I tend to use the Seagate hybrids. Despite a shitload of websites giving it bad press, I don't really have any problems with them.

Nice try, WD shill!
>>
>>55489706
Oh right with those chassis that don't even properly support the hard drive and vibrate them everywhere?
>>
>>55489644
You mean the two HDD models IBM made 15 years ago?
>>
>>55489537
Hgst is hitachi no? I just had a WD blue fail on me this week.
>>

Never get the blues, always get blacks or reds.
>>
>>55489725
HGST is a wholly-owned subsidiary of WD these days, although they operate as an independent company.

I had the 3tb seagate for a about 2 years running on my pc. It stops spinning like every 15 second if you play a video file. Could be an issue with my sata connector as it works fine as a backup external drive.

I bought a WD1TB, works fine in same pc. No issues thus far. The only reason I bought it is because it was highly praised in many online forums as a reliable drive.

Nobody gives a shit about your anecdotal evidence based on a sample size of one. Fuck off.

HGST was Hitachi's HDD division, now owned and managed by WD yes.

I think it's good Backblaze is observing these things, but they make awful graphs that generalize the information too much, causing people to draw the wrong conclusions from them. I know the articles these graphs are from often do contain the raw data, but that data is lost when everyone just starts shitposting the graph alone.
One should note that a much lower number of HGST drives have been observed compared to Seagate drives, and to set both next to each other as percentages really gives the wrong idea. Where findings for Seagate might be accurate, findings for HGST might be not. there's also no clear mention of models used in the graph, and the 36month survival rate graph can give a very wrong picture about one brand, where in fact only a single model of that brand is to be blamed. There's no distinction in the survival rate between different models.

TLDR these charts require additional data to go with them in order to make them accurate.

I always knew Seagate were kinda shitty, but damn. I wasn't sure exactly how good WDs were but they've served me pretty well.
>>
I have HGST, Toshiba and WD HDDs, when I buy one I look where I get the most GB/€.
>>
Western Digital Blacks always. 5 Year guarantee, brilliant performance for a HDD.
>>
>>55490049
Noisy as fuck. If you're buying a hard driver for the "brilliant performance" then you're a literal retard. You buy SSDs for performance. You buy hard drives for long-term storage. WD Reds are the only valid choice. Maybe a Green if you're going to modify it and remove the drive-killing power saving features.
>>
>>55490142
My 4 WD blacks are a lot quieter than my baracuda. I also like how the WD blacks just always stay spinning so you don't have to wait for spin up time.
>>
>>55489954
You can't trust charts from backblaze.

WD drives have never died on me before, but Seagate has. So yeah, I go for WD
>>
This thread seems as good as any for this type of question

Whats the best way to stop a HDD from spinning up when booting? Peferably a software solution that saves those settings, Ive been using Hotswap!, but the drive will always start when I reboot. Disconnecting the drive every time Im not going to use it is not an option.
>>
I have 4 or 5 wd greens completely fine for storing movies. They used to be a lot cheaper in comparison to others. I just got a 4tb hgst nas since they seem to be best value currently
>>
As someone who used to work in IT I'll never buy seagate.

WD all the way.
