Why was Vista so bad?
>>
people installing it onto 512MB ram PCs

I used it since release until 2015 and had absolutely no problems.
>>
>>55477819
it wasnt for me, people are just too ignorant to adjust to something new
>>
Because it was rushed out before it was finished.
>>
>>55477833
This. On a computer capable of running Vista, it's fine. Vista's essentially Windows 7 with a slightly different UI (and no nagware pushing you to upgrade to Microsoft's new Malware OS)
>>
I was on a 512MB RAM device with an Athlon XP 3600+ CPU and had no issues. I have a suspicion that since normies like to blame everything other than themselves they got some viruses from their lesbian porn and poker websites and blamed the slowdown on the OS
>>
>>55477879
>>55477903
You're an idiot if you believe that. Vista was a train wreck before the first service pack. It wasn't until after that that it basically became decent, but the damage to its rep was already done by that point.
>>
>>55477922
You seem to be kind of emotional about this, it's just an OS discussion, no need to be a sensitive woman about it my friend.
>>
>>55477819
It wasn't ...
First multi-arch windows (ran both 64-bit and 32-bit software)
First Aero
First UAC (No BS version)

MS promised to backport DX11, but they did not.

Windows 7 really was pretty much just a Vista 1.5 with a gimped UAC. (They allow toggling it and in effect make it somewhat useless)

not surprising
>>
>>55477819
I don't know. Someone handed me a laptop once to reinstall Windows in, it had Vista, that thing took forever to work properly so I said fuck it and installed Windows 7 after battling with it. That same hardware was much much faster under Windows 7 than in Vista.
>>
>>55477819
Because the "Longhorn" project was a software-engineering disaster of truly legendary proportions. Books will probably be written about what went wrong.

Most infamously, when it became clear that the entire project was on a death march, they literally went all the way back to the Windows XP codebase and started the whole next-Windows project from scratch, running the brand new "Longhorn" (Vista) project partly in parallel with "Blackcomb" (that became "Vienna" and then Windows 7).

A lot of their more ambitious parts, like WinFS and PowerShell, got shelved. Some of these, like PowerShell, managed to survive as a separate entity and got released separately afterwards, popping up in Windows 7. Some, like WinFS, never got beyond shitty prototype stage and vanished, a missed opportunity never to be seen again.

Among the problems was the new WDDM - Windows Display Driver Model - that necessitated entirely new graphics card drivers, mostly to deal with desktop compositing, vastly increased uses of GPU acceleration, and the new kernel memory stuff. Unfortunately they don't get to write the drivers, and at least one of the drivers - Intel's - sucked a complete load of ass on the most common budget chipset of the time.

Then, before they could really fix anything and an early way through the alpha of the project, Dell essentially threatened them with legal action if they didn't release something by Christmas.

So they did. They just shipped it. It didn't go gold, as much as get thrown out the door. I mean, look at it: they didn't even manage to put the loading splash screen logo back before launch after the betas.

Basically, Windows 7 was the actually finished version of Vista.

X2 5200+ with 2GB. Took 2 minutes to boot and was slow as shit.
Went back to XP after SP1 did nothing to fix it, and reveled in my speed until finally upgrading in 2014.
>>
>>55478155
To be fair most were C2D at least, but only 1 or 2 GB of RAM. That was the killer. Give it 6GB and it runs nice enough on most towers, just not laptops.
>>
>>55478124
Vista is based on server2003, not XP codebase
WinFS is basicaly the libraries in win7
If MS would have allowed aero on XDDM drivers like in the betas, everything would have worked fine. But probably someone (Intel?) told them that they had to sell some new products so they deliberately made the GMA900 incompatible
Also pretty sure the splash screen is deliberately made like that, basically they expected everyone to use standby all the time anyway
>>55478252
Nope. C2D was just released at the same time, most cheaper machines used Pentium4s or Ds

the fuck you talking about dude? Vista was entirely new that is part of the why there was so much incompatibility, everyone had high expectations because XP was such a "success" by that point and it had been... six years(?) since release of XP.

It really wasn't that bad.

It had some teething problems, especially due to the switch to 64bit and hw manufactures being slow to update drivers so it developed a bad reputation.

By the time things started to settle down, Win 7 was already on its way and everyone upgraded pretty quickly.

WinXP RTM-SP1 was a cavalcade of security problems. You could break in and get the OS to do bad things without needing any sort of hacking tools.

it was a fucking hog
the machine I had when it came out had 512MB RAM, an 850MHz PIII, and a 10GB HDD, and the other machine I had regular access to had 1GB RAM, a 30GB HDD, and a 1GHz Pentium M

Vista's sysreqs were high enough to pretty much cancel the possibility of me installing it on those machines. It was a fatass, and I saw a lot of machines sold that were only slightly better than the shit I'd ruled out as being unable to upgrade to it without me going out and buying hardware, shit with like 40GB HDDs and 1GB RAM and shit CPUs and with garbage video so no compositing (Intel video was really, really fucking bad), etc

I bought a machine with Vista on it not too long after it came out (it had 2GB RAM, a Pentium Dual Core CPU that I can't remember what it was clocked at, and a 120GB HDD), and life was fine, worked well into the life of Windows 7 with Vista, and I didn't have too many problems (other than an application I used regularly just outright not supporting Vista, that was some shit). Even pre-SP1, sailing was smooth.
Fuck, I might still be running Vista on it today (if I still used the machine, it wasn't ever the fastest thing around) if Vista didn't one day just stop booting (Windows 7 was out, so instead of reinstalling Vista, I just went and upgraded to 7).

It was the first windows os that had rollbacks and gave xp away free to people who wanted it because vista was so universally hated.

In comparison i think 8.0 is the worst windows ever made.

Worst UI
Most unreliable (broken update loop anyone?)
and offered nothing new over 7 i literally could not understand why people chose to use it.

Even with tweaks out the wazoo it was horrible and ran worse than 7 and 10 and even vista it was just a horrible horrible os.

The purpose of the winsxs folder is to keep different versions of dll's to maintain compatibility with programs.

Something that Linux generally doesn't do. Which means Linux takes less space.
But it also means you can run into dependency hell if you try to install different programs that depend on different versions of libraries.

Bullshit for blaming people, it came pre installed on laptops with 1gb and it still ground to a halt after boot. Why? Because micro soft was dumb enough to have disk indexing on its os and Microsoft programs like excel running simultaneously. Re indexing over and over, disk thrashing rendered the os useless for about a year until they fixed this basic issue in a service pack.

This should be revised, since desktop Linux has passed 2% already.

mate, if you have physical access to nearly any machine (access enough to boot something before the OS itself) and the disk isn't encrypted, you can do that
