Which is better for a CS course: OS X or Linux? I personally like Linux a lot, but I would theoretically be able to virtualize all of the major operating systems on a Mac. Also Thinkpads are much much better hardware.

Either will work, as long as you know what you're doing on GNU/Linux it doesn't matter.
If you care about upgradability go for a non-retina Macbook Pro.

VM's on a laptop are kind of shitty though. I mean it's doable but the average laptop processor is kind of shite for this. You're gonna burn your balls off pretty quickly.
