I'm about to purchase my first Android smartphone. Been using a Lumia 520 so far. Dropped that shit quite a few times and it never broke. I liked it, but there's an increasing list of apps I'd like to use and god fucking damnit Pokemon Go just came out and I'm not going out with my tablet.

I'm ready to dump between $125 and $250 on it (500-1000 PLN), but I need to understand what am I paying for. Could you tell me why would I opt for Redmi Note 3 Pro over cheaper solutions? I don't think I need high specs and if there is a more durable alternative in that price range I'm all ears.

I'm open to suggestions, I can't even pick the fucking color for myself. I'd like something that will last for years, I can open that bitch up and replace everything, been building/cleaning/fixing PCs and laptops for quite some time now.
>>
>>55473558
Might help if you specify what you want to use the phone for / what features do you need.
>>
>>55473601
okay, that's the point: I don't know yet. I've been using a brick phone before my roommate handed me down his old nokia, and only then did I realize how handy it is.

I'm sorry for coming out that ignorant, but I don't really comprehend the spectrum of what you can do with your phone. I'd just be glad if it could:

- have a microSD slot, no dual sim needed
- take pictures in moderate quality (just better than my current lumia 520)
- battery for at least one day
- both 5 and 5.5 sizes are acceptable, ill be putting it in a flip cover anyway
- won't break into pieces when dropped from 1m onto soft ground in cover, or tempered glass will secure it
- IPS screen would be nice
- ill be using it to play Pokemon Go, Hearthstone and whatever the new hot shit is
- some lightweight mobile "gaming", no wannabe PSP/3DS performance needed (...though, to be fair, Hearthstone's optimization is laughably bad)
- English or Polish interface, both will do
- preferrably something I can open up and repair by myself after the warranty is over

Are there any other features/questions I should be looking into?

How durable is Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro?
>>

My Z Ultra finally took the biggest hit from my ass and now I'm looking to replace with something from the current gen of Android phones.

I'm currently using my antique HTC Butterfly S as a burner, but the SoT is around 3 hours+, as compared to the 5 hours it had when it first came out.

I've been following up on /spg/ for the past week, and there seems to be a shift in taste when it comes to the S7. I'm an anti-samshit guy, the last phone I had that was Samsung was the S3 and that failed in 6 months. (loose usb port) I know that the Galaxy lineup has been shit, with Touchjizz and whatnot, but /g/ has been warming up to the S7 really well. I'm wondering if it really is as what they say.

On the other hand, I travel alot for work, so I'm also looking at chink phones. All the buzz for the RNP3 has got me to look into the new Snapdragon cores.

My knowledge is up to the Krait series only, so I'm still trying to figure out the housefires and the good chips.

TLDR; what phone should I get? S7 is made by samshit but if it's good, well ok
>>
>>55473703
/g/ seems to like xiaomi, the note 2 and 3 in particular, though I've never used any.

Remember smartphone batteries don't last nearly as long as old brick phones, so get something with decent battery life.

You probably don't need a Full HD screen on a phone, get a lower resolution screen that'll save you battery and improve performance.

I've been doing my own research, and these are some phones I've been looking into, in the 150-200€ range:

>Moto G 3rd gen (2GB version)
>Xiaomi Note 2 and 3
>Samsung Galaxy J5
>Wileyfox Swift (UK only I believe)

A smartphone these days is pretty much a personal computer without a keyboard and mouse, and Android is pretty much a more closed off Linux distro, so there are very few things you can't do with one.

You might want to root your phone or install a custom ROM on it at some point, look into it.

Moto G3 is actually really nice in its 2gb ram / 16gb memory version. My sister is using it and she loves it. Waterproof and shit. But the picture quality in the night is meh, and the screen is not really an IPS.

I think I'll settle for Xiaomi Note 3 Pro just because my thumbs are big and I fucking hate typing on small screens with them.

Given Lenovo's history with design/innovation (Yoga tablets, for example) I'd say it's a good idea to wait and see. Z can flop, but if it works, it can be really neat.

>>55476789
G5 is a relatively nice phone, but your first option should always be nexus devices for a few reasons.

>stock android
>fastest updates
>monthly security updates
>huge third party dev support

Basically nexus devices will keep getting updates for a long time, and once they stop getting official updates there will be tons of people to unofficially port updates to it. The nexus devices are the most future proof in terms of software you can get.

What's more is that you don't get any shitty skinned version of android that slows down over time. If the G5 can be rooted and you can flash cyanogenmod on it or something then it's fine, but if it can't you really don't want to get stuck with an oem's custom skin.

As for me, all of my phones have had expandable storage and I've never really felt the need for it. Maybe it's one of those things I'll miss when it's gone, but I'm really looking to get a nexus as my next upgrade.
Currently running a moto x pure and it's a great phone, but the support from motorola is disappointing. Looking to upgrade to the nexus devices releasing in 2018 probably.

Anything that isn't waterproof shouldn't even be considered
That SD slot is just a bonus
>>
>>55476979
Of course it is. Why would LG fix it, when they want you to buy the G5?
>>
>>55476832
Thanks for the good reply. I am not terribly bothered by the lack of mSD slot. Can I use a Nexus device with Verizon? Do I have to buy an unlocked phone and bring it into the VZW network?
>>55476991
Examples?
>>55476784
See this is what I was thinking. I don't need a flagship phone necessarily. Just build quality and to be somewhat futureproof[sic].
>>
>>55477015
Nexus devices are only sold off contract, but they are compatible with all US carriers.
>>
>>55477013
well fuck, I honestly don't know what to get. I was torn between the g4 and the nexus 5x, the g4 is superior in almost everything, but the nexus is a fucking nexus, you get the updates, custom roms and kernels but they don't age well hardware wise.
>>
>>55477026
That's pretty steep overhead
$500+ is a lot of money

Is it worth more than double the G5?
>>
>>55477051
not for full price.
If I were you I would also look into the Moto X Pure.
I got mine for $300 and it's basically a nexus 6p with slightly weaker hardware.

If the specs aren't to your liking then the G5 is also a solid choice.
>>
>>55477015
>somewhat futureproof

Any flagship you buy will last for 3 years at least. That is unless another crippling android malware comes out and you're using anything except a nexus.

>>55477048
The 6P is aging extremely well because Huawei needed to prove to the US they could make a not shit phone. The 5X is not, namely because LG wants you buy a goddamn G5. They were also very mad to lose the premium nexus contract to Huawei in the first place.

If I was you, if you were to get a nexus I'd say only the 6P is worth it. I'm honestly reticent to recommend any other android phone because carriers and manufacturers stop caring about the phone the second after you buy it.

But the OP3 or Redmeme may also be options to consider.

Help me /g/
My Moto X Pure screen shattered, along with the digitizer.
Right now I'm using a mouse to use it and back things up. The mouse is connected from male micro-usb to female usb.
I can't get the files onto the computer because whenever it's plugged in, it automatically goes to the "charging" mode instead of being "connected as a media device". Can;t change that because I can't plug the mouse in and have it connected to the computer at the same time.
Any ways to get it to default to media device?

Guys, got a little issue here, my moto g (first gen) just died and obviously, I need a replacement soon.

What are the current /g/ approved smartphones?, if there's any at all, I thought about getting one of those xiaomi with the 4000 mha battery, because it sounds like it will last for days and the price is alright, i don't need to fucking watch 3d imax on it, just battery duration, LTE and decent characteristics is more than enough, like the moto g back in the day.

oh, and being easy to root is a massive plus too.
>>
So which is better for the LG G4, leather or plastic back?
>>
>>55477144
Same thing happened to me a while back when my sister dropped my phone down the stairs.
You need to boot into twrp and then it will automatically enable the "connected as a media device" thing and you'll be able to drag and drop all your files.

Best upgrade for you without breaking the bank would be a Boost S4.

It's still $129 and has a removable battery you can replace with an extended zerolemon or anker battery.

Stay away from chinkshit if you value your hard earned money.
>>
>>55477089
I can get the G5 for $200 from Verizon. People shit on contracts, but I don't see the real hurt. They save me money and I don't spend a dime with them more than I would have anyways.

>>55477137
>using anything except a nexus
Yeah this is the only thing that scares me with Android. I've been a long time Windows Phone user, and I'm just sick of Microshill and Jewrizon's shitty relationship screwing me in the middle.

I have a Gen 1 Nexus 7 tablet that was perfectly fine up until a certain Android was rolled out. It's practically unusable now. I'm not sure if the phones are better taken care of by Google, but I haven't had any personal experience seeing the benefit of Google phones.

I'm leaning towards the G5.

>>
>>55477250

>>
>>55477244
>people shit on contracts, but I don't see the real hurt
If you're on verizon it is cheaper to be off contract. The monthly payment is significantly less per line, and the only thing more expensive is buying phones at full price.

I buy a $300 phone every 3 years and it is so much cheaper than being on contract and getting a $200 phone every 2 years.

>>55477245
>I wouldn't recommend the MXP unless it's bought for like $200. Nothing but issues from mine, and Lenovos customers service is pretty awful
I have a MXP as well. Out of curiosity, what issues have you had? my phone has been pretty much flawless with no issues at all. Luckily I've never had the misfortune of dealing with Motorola/Lenovo customer support, but the phone itself has been very good to me.

>>55477250

>>
>>55477302
Virgin operate in dozens of countries. Chink shit is great IF it works on your network, which is less likely if you're American.
>>
>>55477244
That nexus was shit because Asus cheaped out on the mmc module because they needed to save cost for that low price
Meanwhile the Note 8 with higher quality components would last a lot longer, as it is with the 2nd gen nexus 7
>>
>>55477302
>I've heard good things about chinkshit though, why so against it?, any evidence, proof?
Because all those "reviews" on chinkshit websites aren't legit. At least on places like amazon you know the "verified purchase" reviews are legit because the customer literally bought the thing he's talking about.

You have to be careful with your money. You're not a child anymore anon.
>>
>>55477269
Oh I was gonna get black anyway, the other colours look shitty, but now I'm worried about wear and tear, guess I'll have to do some research

3/3 = 2/2
Your math works out literally 1 to 1...so?

Except I get a 17% off my monthly bill for being on contract and working for a major industrial company.

I think it's a case by case basis, and I think for me contracts are harmless.
>>
>>55477402
Lmao why are you on Virgin? Boost gives you more data for the same money. Do you enjoy getting cucked? They even use the same networks (sprint).
>>
>>55477419
oh that discount might be why
When I switched to off contract I saved like $25 per line which amounts to a lot more savings than you calculated.
>>
>>55477419
People who buy the phone outright usually get much much cheaper sim only deals or just pay as you go. But you have a good deal from your job it seems.
>>
>>55477467
Oh I didn't know this.
Yeah I may be only one out of many, but between the discount and combining my plan with about 6 other people, we all come out pretty solid.

I can't believe /g/ was so against this phone.
