Likewise.
>The liquid then returns to the hot interface through either capillary action, centrifugal force, or gravity, and the cycle repeats
Liquid evaporates, vapour rises because gravity, condenses on the cool end, liquid falls back down to hot end because gravity.

>>55476934
Ok, here's a nice experiment for you; get your laptop, put it on a desk and then run furmark or intel burn in test or both. Keep an eye on the temperature and note what it settles on. Now, flip it so that it's standing on the screen as if the screen were the base instead. Now take a look at those temperatures again. Either your temperatures will have climbed or your clock rate will have sunk.

Yes, capillary action is *partially* responsible for the movement of the liquid but not wholly responsible. No amount of insults will change that.
>>55476946

I tried it on my Chinkpad L412. The methodology is as follows.

I run a program that logs the CPU temperatures ten times per second. I let it run for ten seconds with the system at idle, then start a program that simply while(1)-spins four threads to load the CPU. I let it run for one minute, then stop it, and let the CPU cool down for one minute. Then I stop logging.

The results are graphed. Pic related is with the Chinkpad in normal position, on a table. More pictures to follow.

>>
>>55481268
>>55481278
>>55481297
>>55481305
So with the results in hand, it does seem that there may be a slight gravitational sensitivity to having the back of the laptop face down.

I actually reran this test a few times to see if it was a fluke, but it seems pretty repeatable. Whether it is significant is a wholly different matter.
>>
>>55481268
In case anyone wants to repeat the experiment, here's all the code I used.

The first is a Python3 program, "tempgraph", that logs the temperature. It's hard-coded to find Intel coretemp devices; change if necessary:
http://pastebin.com/VBKG2mDb

The following is a small C program for creating 4 spinning threads to load the CPU:
http://pastebin.com/JGYzUQKg

Redirect the output of tempgraph to a file, and plot it using gnuplot:
set terminal png size 1024,768
set output "/tmp/temps1.png"
plot [0:130] [20:100] "/tmp/temps1" using 1:2 title "Core 1" with lines, "" using 1:3 title "Core 2" with lines

Automate the testing with this command-line:
tempgraph -d 0.1 >/tmp/temps1 & sleep 10; loadcpu & sleep 60; killall -v loadcpu; sleep 60; killall -INT -v tempgraph

Actually, since it seemed that the temperature hadn't stabilized when the loaded minute had passed, I redid the test with three minutes load and return-to-idle, with pic related as result.

I'm not really sure if this can be explained with the orientation of the heatpipes relative to gravity, though. If that were the issue, I should think that >>55481919 (where the side of the laptop faces down) should be more affected, since that's the primary direction that the heatpipes run.

Having it in hand, the arm can probably hold a lot of weight as it has dials that can be tightened to lock it in position. However, with something heavy that would be a pain as you'd have to adjust the dials each time to move the arm (with my surface I can keep it 'half tightened' and have all pivots easily adjustable while still holding its shape when I let go, but I don't think it would be possible with something much heavier- the Surface is 0.8kg for the record).

The rubber holders may prove to be a limitation as measuring them they can only hold a cuboid less than 16mm thick. The rubber tabs that support a device 'upside down' like in my picture are also not particularly strong. I doubt they'd support anything really heavy.

So I guess it depends on whether you have a big laptop or an ultralight?

Hope this helps!
