Can I repartition my laptop HDD, move all my data over, and install another Linux on the primary boot partition?
I want to install a new distro on my laptop without the hassle of backing up 170GB of data over a usb 2.0 port while it sits there and overheats.

I'll try explaining again.
I have Fedora 22 installed on a laptop, but I want to change to Ubuntu 16.04
Therefore I want to split the hdd into 2 partitions, move all my files across to the new partition, and install Ubuntu over Fedora on the old partition, or do a clean install of Fedora 24 on my old partition.

I was basically just saying to make 3 partions. Make the first two relatively small. Use those for as the system partition and install Ubuntu and Fedora on them respectively. Then use the third larger partition for your home directories, that way, even if you erase a distro, add a new one, overwrite one, etc, all of your files from both distros will be safe on the third partition.
