Can /g/ help me get a functioning GUI on my Raspberry Pi running FreeBSD?
Also, are there any Window Managers or Desktop environments that are particularly popular amongst *BSD users, or maybe even not typically available for Linux?
But anyway Ive been trying to get a GUI running with no success. :^(

For now, learning FreeBSD

CWM is probably the WM most unique to BSD that people actually use. It was developed by OpenBSD and is available on FreeBSD and works a bit differently from linux WMs. For example, it doesn't have multiple desktops but instead you switch between tasks (e.g., one command will call up your IRCs and shit. another will open up your coding shit, etc..)
Getting a gui up should be easy. Just go find a WM and compile/pkg add it and then it'll pull in xorg.

I have icewm installed. I had xorg-minimal installed, but Xorg -configure kept failing saying no displays found. startx failed the same way. I then installed the package "raspberrypi-userland-20160306" which conflicted with and therefore removed xorg-minimal. Now I have no xorg installed, though icewm remains installed

I did most of that. That tells you to use a specific FreeBSD image though, which is not the one I am using. Ill go back and try it all again though, maybe I missed something

well is it plugged in a screen or are you just ssh'ing to it
if it is and it's still not working then try "setenv DISPLAY :0" if you're using csh or "export DISPLAY=:0" if you're using sh

its plugged into a display but I am also sshing into it. For convenience I am running pretty much entirely through ssh but I am running "startx" on the pi itself
I tried the setenv command you mentioned but it does not seem to help.
