RX 480 pci-e was fixed in 16.7.1 drivers and gained %4 average performance boost in games. Nvidia shills will respond to this.

The damage has been done. If AMD sold thousands of these things, that's thousands of dead motherboards. The class action coming will sink them.
>>
>>55465619
In fact this one (>>55465650) did
>>
>>55465650
No ones motherboard broke dumbass the whole thing was overblown no mobos couldnt handle 6 extra watts there was 1 or 2 uncomfirmed reports out of thousands we saw nearly 0 response of damaged mobos.
>>
>>55465650
Funny how overclocked 750Tis pulled more then 75 watts to and no one reported their pci-e slots breaking. Or how the 960 has higher spikes of 225 watts as opposed to the 480s 150 watt max spike.
>>
>>55465726
You better delete that
>>
>>55465650
>If AMD sold thousands of these things, that's thousands of dead motherboards.
In fact very few people had a fried pci-e slot.
There were some people that had this problem, but you're making it sound like every person who got the 480 had their mobo fried when very few did.
The second amd announced that they were going to release an updated driver to fix the power issues, anyone who continued to use then thing and even fucking bench it were complete retards for not just waiting until they released it.
>>
>>55465676
Actually there were quite a few reports of PCI slots getting broken.

However those reports were often coming from cryptomining niggers who ran 3 of these cards on six year old motherboards.
>>
Lots of excuses from AMDumbs for AMD literally killing people's motherboards with a graphics card. Yet if it'd been Nvidia, we'd never hear the end of it.
>>
>buy 4gb 480
>unlock it to 8gb for free
>boost and fixes in drivers
Is there a reason not to buy this card?

>Or how the 960 has higher spikes of 225 watts as opposed to the 480s 150 watt max spike.

mobos can take spikes, quality ones anyway.

The problem was that the rx480 used more than 75W AVERAGE DRAW. The 960 used some 60W average only (well below the limit), and even that was only on a factory overclocked AIB card, not on the fucking reference design.
>>
>>55465937>>55465986
PCI-e slots can either handle more watts or they cant nothing in between if it cant handle 79 watts it will shut off as some people reported. But the system in plave to deal with power spikes is a bigger danger because it does degrade unlike the power delivery system which does not weaken over time.
>>
>>55465962
Nvidia kids want you to wait for a $300+ gpu that only has %10 more performance for about 6 months before amd rolls out faster drivers not to mention low memory terrible band with and no async. 480 is gonna be supperior in 1 year time.
>>
>>55466103
It'll be superior in 6 months time, maybe less.
>>
>>55465911
the one that i can think of that got posted a bunch was a dusty fucking motherboard that worked again after cleaning it.
>>
>>55465619
Where's all the nvidia shills now? Seriously, it's damn quite in here right now.
>>
>>55466488
My thoughts too.
Before today you couldn't go ten minutes without coming across one of them practically tripping over themselves to badmouth it.
Now after the driver update all the sudden they're nowhere to be found.
>>
>>55465619
Fake FPS. The 480 was simply reprogrammed to pretend it's more performant by duplicating 4% of frames.
>>
>>55466872
>performant
In what country is this a word?
>>
>>55466884
It's used in scientific and tech literature all the time. Do you get this mad about every industry specific term that isn't listed in the dictionary?

The fact that this is even an issue is mind blowing ive been sitting here watching these threads blow up with
>oh amd is breaking motherboards
>oh amd is gona go down for this
>oh amd is so far in the hole they will be over by 2017

The simple truth is that if you have an overclocked card chances are your pulling more than 75w simple fact... not to mention their are other cards that use 75 or more stock. Moral of the story is don't buy chinkshit motherboards and you wont have a problem?

Ontop of the fact that amd is only in the hole slightly more than nvidia and yet they have their hand in almost every console on the market and alot of the mobile gpu market.

I seriously hope that vega shuts everyone up.
if you want a good card for cheep and dont have a 30$ motherboard by all means by a 480 if you dont want it than dont buy it?

I dont know why people dont wait for both companies to release all their cards this happens every time new cards come out.

This is the same bullshit with windows vs mac vs linux just use what you like no one can stop you and no one actually gives a shit about what you like
>>
>>55467426
Actually no, the chances are not. I don't know of a single card from the top of my head that is capable of pulling anywhere near 75W from the PCI-E slot no matter the overclock. Let alone stock.

Most cards take less than 50W even with massive overclocks. The only relevant one I know that goes over 70 when overclocked is GTX 750Ti and that only goes over barely. The VRM can't even realistically handle more than 70W unless it's one of the models with an additional 6 pin.

You must be a religious AMD zealot if you're still defending this shit after AMD already fixed it.
>>
>>55467794
>what is GTX960
>>
>>55467794
>>55467794
The 750ti draws 73 watts at stock average. If you overclock reasonably it goes why the fk over 75 watts buddy.
>>
>>55467426
>I dont know why people dont wait for both companies to release all their cards this happens every time new cards come out.
Fanboys will be fanboys. I'm an AMD shill but not a moron, I'll see what happens and hope I don't have to buy Nvidia for my next build due early next year. I also hate Intel so double the hope for AMD. But I'm not going to shitpost about it.

Patch 16.7.1 limits the pci-e draw to 75 watts check amds patch page they addressed this days earlier saying it would be fixed next driver update
>>
>>55468403
just read pcper
>Current still doesn’t make it down to 5.5A in our testing, but the PEG slot is now pulling 5.75A in our worst case scenario, more than a full amp lower than measured with the 16.6.2 launch driver.

It pretty much was fixed, 0.25A is nothing.

but how does it OC now?
>>
This happens every time nvidia and amd start releasing new graphics cards. AMD has crap drivers at time of release while nvidia rakes in the cash on people upgrading from last year's high end cards. Just wait a few months, AMD will write drivers and NVidia will release a bigger card.
>>
>>55468444
I don't care about OC, so I'm wondering if there's any room for undervolting on top of the fix. The wattage for the 480 is still too high for me.

PCPer article, by the way:
https://www.pcper.com/reviews/Graphics-Cards/AMD-Radeon-RX-480-Power-Consumption-Concerns-Fixed-1671-Driver
>>
>>55468706
Just wait for the non-reference cards.

Some of them like the sapphire one will have 8 pin power supply connectors which should fix the power issue.
>>
>>55468706
Depends on how far AMD undervolted and how they did power redistribution if they did (card uses a programmable VRM controller, there's a temporary fix on overclock.net that forces the power distribution more towards the PCI-E plug)

I know there are people who have shaved .15v off the operating voltage and the card didnt even sneeze at it.
>>
>>55468717
I'm talking overall wattage, it's still too high for my taste. Also, I only have a 6pin.
>>
>>55468736
I can't imagine AMD would eat that much given they were just trying to out as many cards as possible. Seems like it might be a golden card though, 0.15v is pretty substantial.
>>
Which one i should choice
MSI GTX 970 4GD5T OC TIGER for $378
or
Giga GV-RX480D5-8GD-B for $360
>>
>>55468778
Well, we wont know until AMD rolls out the driver. We do know that the drop in voltage is substantial enough to cause the cards to run at higher clocks for longer periods due to less power being drawn.
>>
>>55467426
>The simple truth is that if you have an overclocked card chances are your pulling more than 75w simple fact...

no, you're not. at least with maxwell all the cards have a limit set in bios, to get around it you would have to intentionally mod and flash new bios with the limit raised to allow it to draw more than 75w from the pcie slot. i'm sure similar limits exist on amd's cards too, the 480 only drew too much from the pcie slot because of bad power delivery that was specific to the design of the pcb they used for the reference 480.
>>
>>55468917
flash the 4 gb version of the 480 to 8 gb and save some money
>>
>>55468265
I don't give a shit. You're pulling numbers out of your ass and that card is outdated.
It also comes with no pcie power connectors, so it has an excuse in the unlikely event that you're right. Which you aren't.
>>
>>55468778
Even before this I've seen people undervolt reference cards and lose around 20-30W
I don't see how this is new, AMD has a history of overvolting all their chips.
