Can someone explain to me what Linux really is?
I'm taking a technology degree and I still couldn't describe it.

Linux is the kernel. GNU is the operating system tools that form a foundation for a complete OS. That is why the term GNU/Linux exists.

Okay so what is a kernel?
>>55462527
The kernel is the brain of the OS. It manages all the processes of the OS and also contains drivers for hardware to run along. It is not the entire OS itself, despite what folks on /g/ or your shitty college prof will tell you.

So the kernel is to to the OS what the mobo is to the GPU, CPU, RAM, etc?
>>55462618
you could think of it like that, I suppose. They are all parts, and when combined form a working computer.
>>55462492
it's a computer
>>55462675
no.
>>55462492
That must be a really shit degree.

I'm with this anon

I took computer software in college. This university degree is technology related. Keyword: related.
Not everyone wants to become a Comp Sci autist.

Every operating system contains a kernal, which is the most important program that regulates the other programs
Linux is a kernal. It is important because it is fast and portable, also somewhat future-proof
