I have too a Moto G 2nd gen. The trick is to :
- Run Android 6.0.1 ( CM13) WITHOUT GAPPS
- Have Micro-G as GAPPS substitute
- No Facebook app
- No auto-memory cleaner

I haven't complained for months and this saved me from spending 200+ € on a new phone.
Trust me, Google apps are the devil here. Try micro-g.

>mfw three years old shit-tier phone running the latest version of android
>>
>>55463434
You didn't get it.
Micro-g is just an alternative. I never forced you to use it.
Also, let me make it a little more clear:
Google Services Framework is the devil for your phone as it is equally a RAM, battery and storage killer.

In my opinion though, Android is not bearable without Play Store. There are only a few apps on F-droid that don't really justify the wonderful OS Android is.
>>
>>55463157
>install GmsCore
>install Play Store
>connect to google services

IMO micro-g is not much better than regular gapps, except it's custom so a lot crashes or just doesn't work. i don't see the point of using a FOSS library just to make API calls to proprietary spy services

i may even be using it w/o rrealizing because the location middleware seems to come bundled with my ROM's recommended gapps package

thoughts?

The main point of micro-g is that's it is lightweight for the phone . Truly, a saver for those 1GB RAM phones.
The second point is that it is somewhat stripped off the botnet functions. It makes the needed calls for GMS to work for those apps that need it.
I use it mainly for the first point.

The location middleware you have is in fact different than the one on fdroid ( and microg) . you have to uninstall that to make microg work properly.

fair enough, goog play svc clocks 105 mb RAM on my phone but the OS and UI don't help either

>somewhat stripped off the botnet functions
most of the truly offensive botnet functions are packaged in dedicated apps. these are easily disabled in system settings.

i mean things like backup transport, bookmarks/contacts/calendar sync, partner setup, ok google enrollment, etc.

it does make me nervous that core gapps (in my case only google play store) can bypass tools like xprivacy.

my starting base was a very bare AOSP ROM with banks dynamic gapps, so google began as a healthy distance away until i started using a debit card and installed hangouts/maps

>>
>>55464059
Closest thing I can think of is the Boost S4 on amazon. It's only $129. Only downside is it's locked with Boost so check for sprint network coverage first. It supports LTE + Spark LTE (aka Enhanced LTE).

>>55464172
You're gonna have to consider switching carriers if you want a good ~$100 non-chinkshit phone I'm afraid. I think Boost will let you keep your phone number. They give you unlimited high speed data + 8GB mobile hotspot for $55/month which is breddy gud if you ask me.
>>
>>55464242
I have 5GB 4G with unlimited text and 100 minutes for $30/month with tmobile but the plan doesn't exist anymore so if I leave it I can't come back.
This plan is perfect for me.

>>
>>55463157

>>
>>55464284
Boost has a 2GB data + unlimited call/text plan for $30/month and the data grows to 5GB over time. We all have to make sacrifices mang. There aren't any other good options for a good ~$100 phone and this one costs this much because Boost subsidizes the hell out of it.

Just got an iPhone 5s and so far it's pretty good. TouchID with Wells Fargo and Last Pass is a fucking blessing, but unfortunately this thing isn't good on battery.. watching any video diminishes the battery like no phone I've ever seen before but thankfully music playback holds up for the day.

My Flex 2 recently stopped being able to be charged so I decided to get this to handicap myself and stop using my phone to constantly seek entertainment and avoid my problems and it's fucking working because I'm actually talking to my friends a lot more.

But good lord I don't recommend any of you switch to iOS if you never experienced an iOS device. There are absolutely no benefits and any security you might feel you might as well get a Nexus devices. Don't do it brothers. Stick to your superior operating system. I'm going to stand by this phone for a year until i upgrade to a Nexus device. (I can't leave because im a boost mobile agent and taking advantage of referral money)

That's fine then, the usefulness of the smart cover is questionable. What's the best way to root the phone and install a custom rom? There seems to be a lot of vague or conflicting information around. It doesn't help that support for older models seems somewhat ephemeral.
I'm on stock Android 5.0.2.
>>
>>55468671
Kingroot. Then use autorec for lollipop. Then install the latest recovery from the one autorec installs. Then pic whatever rom you like. Don't flash supersu - you'll get bootloop and custom ROMs have built-in root anyway. Also pay attention to the version of your g2 - there's like 10 different incompatible models. If you screw something up flash stock with flashtool.

Replace the battery and in any case send it for repairs on the charging circuit. I had this happen to an S3 until I just changed phones with somebody and got a Huawei.

I had a G2 until the other day when it fell off my nightstand and cracked the screen on something. It survived some fucking insane drops so it must have hit at just the right angle.

Now I'm back to my 808 which isn't really much of a smartphone anymore. Probably going to get a G Plus next week, but am tempted by the X Pure and 1+3

Got a BLU Vivo XL when my LG G2 took a nasty fall for the last time. Needed a quick replacement, and this was the cheapest phone with band 12 +2GB of ram. Luckily enough it's rootable and can used xposed, but no custom roms to speak of. Phone is fast enough, chose this over the BLU Life One X because I wanted a poppin' AMOLED screen and the SOC is barely adequate enough to drive a 720p screen.

I'm also using it and I like it. I don't want the toolbelt since it takes some space, has capacitive buttons anyway, and the OS is made to be comfy even without it. Touchpad keyboard (like in Priv and Passport) would be awesome though.

Hate how some Android apps don't work with it when I really want them to work. I recently found a nice communication program that would replace all the shit I'm currently using (fb, skype, Teamspeak) but it doesn't work on BB10's Android runtime. I would love to get some Android phone with a keyboard (Priv is damn big and expensive) but then Android itself is just so bad. Maybe I should git gut and write my own apps for BB10.

Got a Nexus 5X on Project Fi.
Just flashed Android N (NPD56N) and I'm liking it so far. Can't get TWRP working without decrypting userdata, so no custom kernel at the moment.

I'm toying around with the idea of switching to Verizon... but I'm not quite drunk enough to sign my soul over to satan yet.

just run fastboot oem unlock then flash tarp
you shouldnt need to decrypt
