It only uses DDR4 now. You can't use LGA 2011 chips in LGA 2011-3 and vice versa as far as I know. There is no compatibility between the X79 and X99 platforms aside from the socket.

I just said that we "need" amd to deliver something so it could bring some real competition to intel that way maybe we could see some improvements and better prices.

Said that i though zen is coming 2 years too late, and I'm not expecting big surprises.
>>
>>55461229
I don't know much about chipset compatability, but will my Xeon E3-1280 v5 (Skylake) eventually fit on a LGA 2011 system? Wikipedia seems to be leaning towards no: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGA_2011#Server_.28Xeon_E5-16xx.2F26xx_v3.29.

Also is 2011 worth it for small workstations or should it really only be reserved for servers and/or super computers?
>>
>>55461324
No. That will not fit LGA2011. E3-1280 V5 is a LGA1151 processor. It's fucking tiny compared to the LGA-2011 socket.
>>
>>55460810
>muh high end workstation CPU
top kek, I bet you are a IT "specialist"
>>
>>55459269
Bravo Intel, I can't believe there are morons that actually bought them. You can get brand new Xeons with the same core count and HT for less than half the price. I don't get this product at all. If you really need more cores, then Xeons are usually the way to go. If you want a hybrid machine capable of gaymes and multi core workloads, then a 5820k was the sweet spot. If you want a gaymen system, then you grab an i5. Broadwell-E is such a bad release, fuck. Holy shit Zen, please be at least as good as Haswell. I'll buy your 8 core even if it's $500 starting. I want more cores to replace a 3570k.
>>
>>55461528
The Xeons have lower core clocks and locked multipliers. That's what you're paying for chump.

wtf is a 5xxx? point to the exact processor that you're talking about, because you can't get used Xeons for cheap unless they are obsolete, and the LGA2011 ones are obviously not compatible with LGA2011-3 motherboards. Which is what you want.

at least the 5820k or 6800k can OC decently well.

My 5820k matches 4790k/6700k single core performance.
>>
>>55462439
It's a few generations old by now isn't it? I am tempted to go Broadwell-E... I haven't done anything to this PC for a long while now.
>>
>>55460715
>single core
>>
>>55462490
It's literally 1 generation old essentially.

Haswell, then broadwell, then skylake.

But broadwell for desktop only had 3 SKUs and none were sold very widely. They essentially skipped it for Skylake.

The 4790k is within 10-15% of a 6700k.

And broadwell-E is only more cores, not a different core design.

Save your money for a GPU upgrade or a new CPU in 2-3 years.
>>
>>55462490
It's still being produced ex Xeon E5-2658 V3, so theoretically you could say it's current gen if you really wanted to.

>>
>>55462605
I dont know why you specified that specific Xeon when there are several E5 V3 Xeons which are identical.

You specified the 2658 v3 as if it were some sort of singularity.
>>
>>55462595
What's the point of having more than 2 cores as a single user?

The only things I can think of that'd warrant having 10+ cores is if you do 3D rendering a lot, or perhaps video encoding.
>>
>>55462656
Because I have that specific one. Notice the two letters ex? That stands for example.
>>
>>55462677
You could just as easily have said E5-2637 v3 which would have been a much more apt example.

It's 4 core 8 thread CPU (like his 4790k)

But in reality the E5 V2 series is more similar to the 4790k as E5 V2 is still DDR3 whereas V3 is DDR4.
>>
>>55462524
I has the monies (yay tax refund) for a complete new system. Probably going to go for an i7 6800K and a GTX 1080 or two.
>>
lel I have an i5 6600k, they're not going to Jew me into thinking my penis is smaller because of it and get me to buy this 2k dollar processor
>>
>>55462729
Do you think I remember all these fucking names, asshole?
>>
>>55462730
I mean it's your money. I'd throw that $1+ into an investment account or something.

You have no reason to upgrade for gaming and getting a 6800k will actually provide worse gaming performance for any game that uses 2-4 cores. The 6800k is clocked much lower than your 4790k. You'll need to OC the 6800k to ~4.3GHz just to match your stock 4790k.
>>
>>55462785
I don't game much nowadays, but really am getting into content creation. Mostly photography but I really want to get into heavy video (4K+ C-LOG etc.).

I'm looking at a 5K Adobe RGB IPS display so I'll probably need a beefier GPU set-up for CUDA acceleration. Having a highly-threaded CPU will help me cut encoding times too.
>>
>>55459682
160 cores tho.

Get a double xeon gaming keyboard (the one with cooling and 4 way SLI support) and you will get a supercomputer.
