Will Windows 10 remain free if I unstall it but downgrade?
I assume I'll have to use it eventually, but I'd really rather not just yet.

As long as it is activated, yes. You just put the iso back on in the future and it activates again automatically because of the hardware ids. Might want to put it back on if you sell your system so people think it is 'modern.'
