Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I plan on getting a Thinkpad soon, but I'm still so conflicted between getting a x220 (possibly x220t) or a T420. The spcs between the two look more or less the same, and I like the idea of having a smaller laptop, but I also like bigger screens.

Does anyone have a x220 and T420 and have a preference between the two?
>>
>>55446924
Didn't need the storage (already have 256GB mSATA SSD + 1TB spinning rust) or a DVD-ROM.

(soon to be headless) server is running Plex and got the big drives for all my media, software, backups, etc. I'll keep some pared-down essentials on the 1TB drive for mobile needs sans wifi, not that I find myself in that situation very often.
>>
>>55447029
I should add, how does the keyboard feel on the tablet version of the x220? I like the idea of being able to completely rotate my screen, but I'm worried the keyboard is going to feel like a piece of shit.
>>
>>55447029
X220 for the better screen. Resolution sucks, but the T420 panel is simply the worst, regardless of resolution.
>>
>>55447042
Good for you then. I wish I found a cheap USB dock, the ultra or pro version.
>>
>>55447029
I have a t420 and an x230 so I'm going to treat it like the x230 just performs like the t420 with an igpu
the t420 has options for discrete nvidia graphics whilst the x220 doesn't so if you want a little more graphical horsepower, go with that
the x230's battery life is phenomenal and I've heard great things about the x220 battery too, the t420's isn't so great and slice batteries are common for x series laptops for that ultra extended life, I have a slice for my t420 but they aren't very common
also x220 you can put an IPS screen in for better colours etc like I have, t420 can't
tl;dr, x220 if you want a comfy little machine with great battery life at the sacrifice of a little horsepower and storage expansion options, t420 if you'll be using it on a desk more and using it for slightly more intensive tasks and go for the nvidia one

The plan is to use it for nothing but word processing, web browsing, non-10 bit video 1080p or under, and maybe I might try and play a really lightweight game.

I don't really play any games older the 2007, and even then none of them were triple A games. If it could do emulation from up to the PS1/64 that would be cool.

>>
>>55447226
Third party battery? They tend to degrade faster. Most use repackaged used or B-grade cells except for some reputable Korean manufacturers.

Set battery thresholds. I think 80/20 is what most people suggest.

Constantly running them down to 0% (severe discharging) = bad

Heat generated when batteries constantly charged to 100% = bad

A year ago I fell for the Thinkpad meme and got a brand new T440p

I'm not going to talk about the fucking terrible trackpad that was a problem from day one but about the terrible as fuck durability I experienced so far.

Like I always keep this piece of junk in a laptop sleeve inside a laptop bag but the question mark key is already missing, one of the USB ports is fucked already and smartctl is telling me that the drive is failing. Anker and Denaq I know of. There may be others.

Might as well post the battery copypasta I put together with some input from others in /tpg/:

Battery tiers:
>FREE BATTERY IF ELIGIBLE - https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/hf004122

>New geunine lenovo - most expensive but more durable and dependable compared to the chinese counterparts. If money is no object, buy new.

>Used/refurbished genuine Lenovo - on a budget, these have all the benefits of new batteries, just with some wear. Only buy used batteries from sellers that will screencap battery stats (charged vs original design capacity, cycle count) so you know what you're getting. Usually price is on-par with high quality third party batteries.

>High quality 3rd party battery - anker & denaq both use jap/korean 18650 cells and are thus known to wear well. Worth considering at this price point. Some models (XX30 and up) will not charge 3rd party batteries, so avoid outright.

>New chinese batteries - reviews are mixed but most use sub-par cells and electronics. They may die unexpectedly or wear much faster than genuine lenovo batteries. Others seem to work fine. There are a million brands and batches out there, so there's no way to tell which is better than another, if they are.

>used chinese or unknown capacity used lenovo - reconsider your life choices that led you to this destitute position

Buying new or used is irrelevant. Just run the battery serial thru the link and see if it works. There have been plenty of success stories of people trolling eBay listings with good pics and run those serials to nab a free battery.

>>55450659
Looks like it. There are a few different models, some with USB3.

There is only one mechanical keyboard god, and the Model M is its prophet. Good fucking choice, m8. You bought a keyboard that will possibly outlive you.

Don't forget if you are trying to hook it up to USB you'll need an active PS2 to USB converter. The ones that just change the "gender" of the plug are no good (aka passive converters). They're only $10-15 but essential.
>>
Why does nobody recommend the W520?

We weep for Lenovo
>>
Is the build quality on modern day Lenovo's the same as older mid 2000s think pads? I usually buy Dell laptops, business account discount, but my Father is needing a laptop and likes Lenovo. His work uses their laptops so he trusts that brand. I don't know much about modern day Lenovo however, I do know IBMs think pads have an amazing reputation.

>>
>>55453585

>>
>>55453592
Once Lenovo bought over the rights to thinkpads in 2005, they began to slowly strip away any sense of dignity that IBM had left behind. Then they proceeded to violently penetrate them in the ass with their communist dicks. their last good model imo, was in 2011, the x220. See >>55453585. Fucking appalling.
Some of the new ones aren't entirely shit but when comparing, you're no longer talking about thinkpads and what they stood for (see OP) but rather consumer-grade shit.
>>
>>55453664
>x220
I'd say it's the x230, with x220 keyboard mod
>>
>>55453677
That's true, the t430 & x230 were still good, albeit Lenovo got rid of the beautiful keyboard layout. T430s was when they pretty much fucked themselves over, tons of issues with it. I would have bought the x230 if it wasn't so expensive here.
>>
Anyone ordered directly from lenovo store?

How long does it take between payment and actually receiving the invoice and order confirm?
>>
Is it a typical issue for a X230 that when the lid is closed it has absolutely poor wifi, when I dock my X230 and close the lid its slow as fuck, gets crap ton of timed out when trying to ping router and I barely can access anything on internet or on my LAN.

Open lid and all works fine. Is there a way to fix this so i could use wifi when my X230 has lid closed while on a dock, other than using ethernet? Would prefer to keep the lid closed when its on a dock
>>
>>55454322
Also this does not happen with my T420, that one works just fine with the lid closed on the dock
>>
>>55454322
Quick question (not judging, just confused) why aren't you using ethernet whilst docked?
>>
>>55454322
Did you try turning it upside down?
>>
>>55454347
Because i am retarded apparently. I connect everything from my desktop to the dock when I want to use my thinkpad as a desktop, and seems like my brain didnt come up with connecting also the ethernet cable on top of my monitor, keyboard and mouse etc.

No idea why I didnt also just connect the ethernet cable too then, i am a idiot. Will do now

There's some voltage fuckery that makes those cheap green or purple PS2/USB adapters not work. You need an active converter/adapter if you intend on plugging it into a USB port.

Tried upgrading the RAM in my T420.

Any memory inserted into the slot under the latch on the bottom of the laptop (DIMM1) doesn't get detected. Everything boots fine, no POST errors, but neither BIOS or the OS can see the RAM.

The memory I bought works fine in the slot under the keyboard (DIMM0) and passes memtest86, so it's not faulty.

Both sticks are same frequency, voltage, CL values, but have different chip densities and brands. The 4GB stick I bought is listed as compatible with the T420 on Kingston's website.

Tried pretty much everything. The fact that there is no POST errors make me think that the memory slot dead. I checked it for debris and cleaned it with a dry cotton swab, but it didn't help.

I'm using a modded bios to remove the mPCI whitelist. Can't be bothered installing Windows to try a different bios. (I know about the ISO method, I'll try it tomorrow when I replace the failing hard drive with a new SSD)

Anyone had similar problems? Is there anything else I could try?

Just FYI it's x201i not x201l.

Any i-suffixed X or T series is just a lower-specced model, usually with an i3 processor instead of an i5 or i7. Unless your needs are very modest and it's an incredible deal or you just want the shell/screen for parts, avoid.

Processors in the X series are soldered, so you can't DIY swap/upgrade it.

The 'T460s' is special in the way it has an increased TDP of 25W instead of the normal 15W. So even if it's used with an i7 CPU the processor will never throttle under heavy loads(CPU+GPU). T460, X260, HP Elitebooks and Dell Latitudes models are 15W TDP.

Cons:
Tiny backspace
Smaller spacebar to make space for the japanese buttons
A few different key placements which don't matter because you can set language to any keyboard
Shift is long like the US keyboards yet Enter key is tall like the EU keyboards
Moonrunes (this may be a pro if you're a weeb)

Pros:
If you like a long left shift like me so your pinkie only goes down like on US keyboards not diagonally right down like on EU keyboards, you have it
If you like big-ass pretty blue/purple enter keys you got it
More face buttons which may or may not look cool, also more buttons to assign to whatever you please
Full size windows key instead of that 3/4 fucker I despised pressing (most of my custom binds are something like CTRL+WIN+SHIFT (easy to do with 3 fingers) + whatever button I want to set whatever program / action / script to)
If you're a japophile you may enjoy the moonrunes

Personally I use a US language software layout on it, and the backspace is still easy to hit - it's a full sized key, but I get the thing I like from the US keyboard of large left shift, plus a nice big enter key that US keyboards lack, and I always hit space in the middle anyway so it's not an issue for me

It's also fun to try and learn the nip layout.

But yea it's very specific, I'd only keep the jap keyboard if - you are a huge weeb and are actually gonna use the jap features on it OR if you really want the small differences such as certain key sizes and shit.
I also like buttons in general and this keyboard has more buttons so it looks cooler motherfucker

If you google one of the X60 or X61 or tablet variants and jap keyboard those fuckers are the coolest looking keyboards as they have all the keys but in that thinner-on-the-left-and-right-sides way that the X60/61 had

Here's the tiny jap keyboard, looks cool as shit, I'd get an X60/X61 Tablet if only they were actually usable / fast enough for the stuff I use my X220 for, they look great
